It's even better on Blu-ray with a 1080p display.

ADM did some good tinkering,
heres my take - keep the smallville flashbacks- lose the opening with the old lady.
we don't need to know where he gets his wealth- just that he's a resourceful con-man . where'd he get the $$ for that lair in STM? or the swank penthouse in SUP4 ?? who cares?? he's got alias, scams, hidden bank accounts, THATS luthor! cut the old lady and lets assume he swindled it in some fashion and we lose ten-15 icky old-lady shaggin minutes.
but overall i was following this since kevin smith was pitchin git and the horrific near misses we got make me shudder- so brian singer's my man.

Not to overrun this thread with Pretentious Tomfoolery, but this is probably the most ambitious fan edit I've heard of to date: www.faneditforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=1802His test clips got the guy an editing job! I'm not saying this should replace SR, but it will certainly be an interesting alternative when it's finally finished!

Being a movie geek, the biggest thing I'm worried about with cinema right now is Warner Bros fucking shit up. Superman Returns was excellent, and it definitely made enough $ to justify a sequel. It made more than Batman Begins, and its sequel is looking like it could make Titanic type money. There is no reason to think that the same isn't possible with The Man of Steel. To me, the Metropolis of SR feels like it coexists in the same world as BB's Gotham. They have such an opportunity to get their shit together and create a DC Universe like Marvel Studios is doing. My fear, though, is that the only thing that WB will learn from Marvel is that you can reboot shit after a couple of years and no one will notice. Doing that with Superman at this stage would be dumb as fuck - and that includes restarting the character with JLA 90210. WB did strike a chord with TDK's viral marketing campaign. The Man of Steel should be done exactly the same way. Several months leading up to TMOS we should be reading issues of The Daily Planet and watching WGBS-TV broadcasts. This viral stuff should be the glue that holds Batman and Superman together until they're ready to cross over (Batman 3 and Superman 3 should be the first and second part of the same story). Once that happens, you can start opening the floodgates with the other DC characters. Warner Bros needs to show the same respect to the overall DC picture that Nolan and Singer has shown to the world's finest. The way to do that is to marry it all to each other the way Marvel is doing, gradually, and not trying to swing for the fences with a JLA or new Superman film that restarts everything. WB needs to understand why the world needs continuity.

The world needs Superman Returns because Superman Lives/Reborn would have surely set the franchise back another 20 years.

Superman Returns has faded a bit for me under repeated viewings. The opening with poor Noel Neil is really...unwatchable. The ending in the hospital is tough for me to take as well. Whatserface as Lois is truly dreadful. It could use a bit more action.
However, the movie has HEART. Routh's performance is EVERYTHING a true Superman fan could want from the role, and that alone is enough to carry it for me. In fact, it's the single most important thing about ANY Superman movie.
Bring on Man Of Steel. And use Geoff Johns' current Action Comics Brainiac storyline as a basis. And if you aren't reading it yet...shame, shame shame.

He specifically mentioned doing a Brainiac story when it was announced he and Johns would be working together. But as I understand it Donner's done, so maybe Johns is just carrying on with his ideas. Anyone know what the deal is with that?

SR is dull and too somber in spots but its high points are unbeatable. Bosworth is lame but Durance is nothing but a pair of tits. Weakest Lois ever.
Routh is THE man, nobody could have done it better IMO.

"SR is dull and too somber in spots but its high points are unbeatable. Bosworth is lame but Durance is nothing but a pair of tits. Weakest Lois ever." The great stuff far outweighs the not-so-great stuff, I agree. Bosworth seemed to have great chemistry with Routh and I thought did a great job.....even though she didn't seem to have QUITE the same energy as I would have expected Lois to have (from Noel Neill to Margot to Teri Hatcher to Erica Durance)--- but....it seemed to fit that Lois was more sedate and less manic, because of being a young single mom and having to be more 'cold' since Superman left. And....I hate cast changes in the middle of a story... and while I think Erica Durance seems to be more in the mold of Margot Kidder's Lois, it's hard to picture her cast against Routh. I know some have suggested a younger Parker Posey, but I think that , given the story circumstances, even she wouldn't have been quite right, given the (deliberate) more somber tone of the film. An aside: It's so freaking rare to have an artistic director like Singer actually care about a superhero property, that I'm DYING to know how he would continue the story and the character of Supes. It would be tragic if he didn't continue the story- but if the studio screws up the deal, I would hope that Singer tells the story in comic book form at the very very least. (though I was hoping for that with his version of Xmen , too.....unlikely to happen...so hopefully MOS gets made with Singer!)

i have watched it twice in the last 2 weeks. it feels very familiar to me now.
i concede singers' mistakes ( stalker-man , sluggish secne editing , overlong ending , UNnecessary opening scene w/ noel niel ) but i agree that the strentghs outwiegh the weaknesses and i am VERY grateful for SR when i reflect on what WAS seriously considered over the 19 years between sup4 and SR.
glass is more-than-half-full.

after our STM chat/commentary thingie, kind of gave me an excuse to watch Superman II and Returns. Maybe Returns has faded for me, but just a little. Still think its great. Really liked Bosworth this time around. agree with Jor-l and Crazy Asian Man, there's much more good than bad.

For some reason I can't get passed Bosworth. I've watched this film way too many times, and she still doesn't impress me. Keri Russell, Claire Danes or heck, even Anne Hathaway would have done a better job than Bosworth.
With Nolan bringing Jake Gyllenhaal, I mean Maggie Gyllenhall to replace Holmes in TDK, I wonder if Singer will be tempted to do replace Bosworth with another actress. Bosworth is the weakest actor in the film, as was Holmes in BB.

I'll NEVER get tired of the plane rescue. One of the best action sequences ever for a comic book movie.

As a morbid tie-in with the movie, years ago before SR came out, I had a dream where I was a superhero and my "big debut", as it were, occurred very much like the movie.
A plane was about to crash onto a baseball field during a big game and I flew in and caught it just in time. Freakishly similar! The only difference was that I took it back up into the air and landed it somewhere else. ;D
The fact that I was watching something on screen that I had literally dreamt a few years back in near perfect accuracy was a very strange experience.

That shot of her kicking off her heels to fly with Supes is one of the sexiest damned things Ive ever seen. Shes a very different Lois than what were used to, but I like the way she plays vulnerable with Big Blue. I also buy her love for the child.
