That's when Sucker Punch comes out. Reviews of which will not be available because it's not being screened until 10PM the night before (after publishing deadlines).
If it's an immediate flop, the Synderman situation will be interesting....

www.deadline.com/2011/03/kevin-costner-set-for-superman-man-of-steel/EXCLUSIVE: It's all over but the press release! Almost a month after Deadline revealed that Kevin Costner was in early talks for a lead role in Superman: Man of Steel, I hear that he has closed a deal to play Jonathan Kent, the adoptive dad of Clark Kent. Costner will join Henry Cavill, who is playing the title role, and Diane Lane, who is playing Martha Kent, his adopted mother. Zack Snyder is directing for Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures. The Superman film is being produced by Chris Nolan, Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, and Deborah Snyder. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers. The new Superman is targeted for release in December 2012. Now, the speculation will begin on who will play the Superman villain. Early reports had Viggo Mortensen as the likely candidate, but I don't think that's going to be possible, if he signs that deal to star with Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron in Universal Pictures' Snow White and the Huntsman. Let the guessing game begin! Costner is repped by WME.

Well, that's good news. And Snyder has all but assured everyone that they WILL release a photo of Cavill in the costume BEFORE they even start shooting in June in order to prevent an unofficial leak. I'm actually very, very excited about that. How Cavill looks in the suit is pretty much gonna be the make-or-break moment for me and this film, regardless of who's directing it after Sucker Punch fails.

Yeah, that first picture is going to be crucial. I know it'll probably make a big difference in my attitude towards the film, for better or worse.

Excellent question, but as ye5man said, there is no way it would be made like that today. It's not a hypothetical - it's a fact. A movie reflects the values and culture of its era. 1978 and 2011 are night and day. Producers and directors would never devote half the film on exposition before the hero appears on screen. Audience attention spans are pathetically short these days, and I don't see that changing any time soon. Ponderous dialgoue? Forget about it. When Clark first discovers the FOS - I'll even admit that the pacing was a bit slow for even a patient observer. But the point is - they were not in a rush to move the story along. The special effects from this point forward are predominantly artificial, post-production with very little in-camera work. A big part of that is it's near impossible for a good actor to stay composed all strung up in wires. Routh couldn't hack it and that's why you mostly see CGI. Donner was extraordinarily lucky with Reeve's flying experience. The upside to making Superman (or any comic film) today is that they are not up against Adam West's batman. Superman had to change a culture (getting an audience take a comic film adaptation seriously) but for whatever reason Donner and Manky reverted back to camp and played the villain for laughs. They never quite explained themselves in the commentaries --- yeah Hackman was great with what he was given but that's not the point. Perhaps they were afraid of straying too far from what audiences could identify with at the time? Who knows. I think any film or concept could be an 'event' in today's culture with the right approach and tremendous discipline and patience. But honestly - I think Jurassic Park was the last film that rivaled such anticipation. That was 18 years ago. There won't be another event movie unless we get rid of facebook, twitter, twats, cell phones, and the internet. It ain't happening.

If STM came out today, the viewers would be comparing Otis to Jar Jar.

with the cast taking shape nicely, and suckerpunch having FAIL written all over it, putting snyder is on thiiiiiiiiiiiin ice.... i dunno-
i have been half-joking that snyder was hired to be a stooge, someone that could be fired. we know chris nolan wanted jonah to direct- so maybe chris torpedoed the movie by hiring the WORST guy possible.
with shooting dates locked, and casting signed... how hard would it be to get rid of his douche-ness? the only way this movie works is if snyder is leashed and nolan tells him whats "awesome".

It does to me. Needs a little more bulk though. An added 2 stone of muscle would sell it physically. I don't want another Superman that cheats with padding.

If STM came out today, the viewers would be comparing Otis to Jar Jar. More importantly, if STM came out today, would ATP think it was crap?

More importantly, if STM came out today, would ATP think it was crap? On the flipside, if Superman Returns came out in 1978, would you like it?

A good mover by Snyder, release an official picture of Cavill as Superman before a one is leaked.
This will be interesting to see the reaction. Remembering the fallout of that pic of Routh...

“It’s been really great,” Snyder said of the collaboration so far. “Chris is awesome. He’s super-respectful but super-helpful, too. You can’t imagine a more generous [collaborator]…once he sort of got what I want to do with it, he was like, ‘OK,’ and once he said, ‘You know what, that’s awesome,’ now he’s 100%. If I say, ‘What do you think of this?’ he’s like, ‘That’s awesome,’ and then there’s a great give-and-take about it, a great conversation that we can have about it and making it better everyday. And by the way he’s hilarious, too.”
bullpoop.
snyder and nolan shouldn't even be on the same continet at the same time, let alone on the same picture.
