There wouldn't have been the budgets of course that the Salkinds had gotten.... but.... If the focus would have been character and story- with minimal effects, would this have been a better possibility?
Definitely a 'what if' scenario.... though probably much harder to imagine.
If it was in 1987, with the Star Trek: Next Gen- then the effects would have been probably easier to imagine on a tv budget- but if not- would this still have been viable in 78? Would have been a challenge, for sure- and it's questionable if Reeve would have considered tv at all at this stage of his career..... but if under Donner's quality check--- could they have done anything? Lois and Clark didn't suffer (imo) from the fx budget imo as the writing for half of the series....

Look at the Superboy TV show. That's what you would have gotten.

In 78? The special effects alone would have been too heavy a burden long term. It's one reason Battlestar Galactica didn't fare better around that same time. Even 12 years later when The Flash tried to properly present an effects heavy hero on tv it was hard to pull off and keep going.

Good points..... maybe I shouldn't have put down '78- but moreso the 80's when they did the Superboy show or when the Next Gen tv show was running. Could Superman have been a tv series as good as Next Gen if fx were on par/about the same level, with a good showrunner? Just trying to imagine how far they could have gone storywise. Lois and Clark did progress storywise to a degree..... and Smallville did as well-- as well as have some interest moments and some great episodes- (*it was of course cool to see the Legion in SOME fashion. Supergirl redone in some way, too.....) But, if Donner supervised a Superman tv show and wanted to stay close to the source material, it might have been interesting..... but maybe- you're right- not in '78....
