In talking recently about STM/SII--- the power of SII (to me) comes from the subplot/personal story of Superman choosing to sacrifice his own powers to be with Lois- and realizing he can't walk away from his responsibilities.
Mank/Donner said that the love story was the key to the Superman movies- but if it reached it's high point and would have been played out in SII and SIII--- then what?
In the comics- when they married off Lois and Superman--- they hit a creative dead end so much so, they felt a need to retcon it.
Now- with Superman available- they still seem to have a creative dead end.
What should they do/have done? Kill off Lois Gwen Stacey style?
Also- what of the movies? I have a hunch they're not EVER going to play the romance angle- without killing off someone- as Nolan's first two movies seemed to have worked great with how he blended it in, but really made the romance angle kind of sloppy/forced in TDKR....
Should Superman just not really be in love in the movie series?

I think it would be an interesting challenge to take up for at least one movie. The love interest sometimes feels formulaic. Especially in comic book movies. There's got to be one so they just jam on in there sometimes. I don think a Superman movie needs one if they focus on certain other things where one wouldn't really fit.

If the movies continued under Donner- then I could have seen the focus shift to Supergirl being introduced in the Superman movies & having her have a love interest- and explore Supes' development realizing that he has ONE other living relative. But--- it seems like many of Donner's films always worked best when there was one central love interest at the core of it. STM/SII certainly wouldn't have worked as well as they did without it, imo.... but, again, Lois established as Supes' one and only has always limited it (at least in the comics) to a strange degree.... (and odd that lifting that idea hasn't really helped it in comics either!)

I think STM did it well. We knew they liked each other a lot, but that was it. S2 went too far too soon probably, and they found themselves in a corner creatively. Giving Superman yet another super power (amnesia kisses) was a cop-out, though turning back time was as well, but it wasn't so bad. The way Lois was blatantly ignored in the following movies was just painful. The best idea it'd been to drag the romance out until the 3th or 4th movie. And then they had their son as revealed in SR and then Lex and anothe super villain try to hurt Superman with his son. Now those are stakes and originality.

I think Puzo was thinking of just completely covering his whole life in STM/SII- with no follow up. In that case, it worked well. On the flip side- it would have been just weird to continue the Superman movies and still just have Lois standing on the sidelines. I think they had some interesting ideas how to handle it in S4- but a bit too convoluted to deal with the memory kiss. The only thing that makes me respect the reboot idea is the idea that we never have to deal with the memory kiss nor time reversal ever again (I hope).

Now we have Superman being a one man bottled city of Kandor with millions of Kryptonians DNA inside him. Sounds like a Paul Lynde wet dream.
