I never thought I'd say this, but some parts of the Thau mix that I originally hated are starting to win me over.
The opening credits, for starters, almost seem too passive without the 'whooshes' when I compared the 2 versions recently. I think it has a thunderous impact on the initial credits, but it could probably still be toned down a bit after Reeve's name appears. The whole sensory overload thing... you can only hear so many whooshes before it becomes annoying.
I'm a little more impartial for the whooshes on takeoffs. Take-it or leave-it at this point. The whooshes do give more dramatic effect, but being a bit over-the-top makes it a wash for me.
1978 still sounds better with Superman's first flight out of the fortress. Even taking the whoosh out of the equation, the trumpets sound much louder and clearer in the original mix. Maybe it's a bit "tinny" or whatever the audiophiles might say, but it's still a clear winner.
On a related note, I'll never understand how it was ok to modernize the audio, but doing things like cleaning up rushed FX were off-limits? Sucks that the hackensack intercept will never be a part of an official cut... and wasn't even included as bonus material for fan editors to have a go at it. Even more of a missed opportunity is that many of the so-called rushed FX shots did not include actors' faces, so they could've been reimagined using new models or CGI (whichever is more economical). Fail on Donner's part. Nobody ever said we needed a 2015 CGI-fest... but merely to bring the substandard effects up to par with the rest of the movie.
