Thought I would add a basic transcript( I think I have heard it correctly but feel free to amend/correct me if you hear it differently) of what Donner said regarding Man Of Steel:
Presenter: Have you seen Man Of Steel-can you give me a sentence-thought about it?
Donner: (Man Of Steel)--It is different!
(audience laughter/applause)
Donner: It is a good picture----Superman is an American classic-- I don't think he is brutal and kills people-I don't think he is angry and mean(applause)
It(or His?) imagery is wrong---he is a great film maker and a great producer-they did a great job but for me personally I miss who he(Superman) was and who he is and I don't think that image should be destroyed
(applause)
Presenter: thank you

and here are the thoughts of Sarah Douglas and Valerie Perrine regarding Man Of Steel:
(apologies if this has been posted before)
Sarah Douglas:
I have to be honest in that I enjoyed the 1st half and I did not particularly enjoy the 2nd half. I felt like I was in a video game and it was all wham wham wham and it was all a bit too much and I really love Henry- I thought he was the hottest thing since sliced bread -thank you very much - however Christopher Reeve is still my Superman
Valerie Perrine:
I hated it!! (audience laughter) I hated everything about it-1st of all I fell asleep-and then all I saw was SFX and smashing into buildings-there was no story going on -there was no sympathy between characters-there was no character build up-it was just SFX and slam bam thank you mam.
Sarah Douglas: I have to say I really miss the humor- this new movie -I know the kids love it and a lot of people enjoyed but it is a different generation

I want to see Donner work with WB and produce something akin to the Batman 66 movie for his Superman. Hard part would be finding someone to voice Reeve's superman. Not sure what to do about that.

LOL. Eh...I think you run into the whole continuity issue there. I thoughf about him and Newton and Christopher but it just wouldn't be the same. If it didn't happen maybe it would be best to cast an all new group of actors all around or get some who can sound like the live action actors.

Shut the fock up stupid. You criticized everything - from Returns to SIV and now MOS. You are a drunken verbal revolutionary. You do nothing with your life, you just hang like the old magnificent bat you are and come up with the most stupid or obvious comments. That's why we didn't want you on Facebook and you were never accepted. Don't try again with another ip - we will detect you quick and ban your booty. Metallo: this is what happens when redneck cousins fock.

In watching the video, I do wish we would have gotten some more thoughts on Donner's reaction to Singer's film--- Though-
Since Singer went to pitch the idea and ask for his blessing first- I can't imagine Donner saying anything less than great things about it... But--- more specifics would have been nice.
It's interesting that Donner sounded very polite but honest about the MOS director- praising him as a director, but being specific about what he disliked about MOS conceptually.

@crazy_asian_man
there is this brief Q&A from 2010 regarding what Donner thought of Singer's film.
"I mean I thought Bryan Singer did a wonderful job with the other film (Superman Returns). You could just do massive action and blow up stuff, but he chose to do the characters more, although he had some beautiful stuff in there." www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/joshw24/news/?a=24539

That's cool....
I just wish we could have a mega-detailed review from Donner (or Tarantino for that matter) on SR available sometime- but it's on that same list as a zillion other things that would be nice to be able to see....

I actually rewatched Returns for the first time in a couple of years at the weekend.
It just seems like the rhythm, tone and expression in the dialogue is off.(even if the intentions are good)
The scene with Lois and Supes on the roof of the Daily Planet is a good example.
Lois says something like "Clark said the reason you left was because it was too unbearable for you-personally I feel that is a load of crap"
And Routh responds rather blandly: "Clark?"---without any real sense that he is searching for the correct measured response.
Compare that to Reeves response to Kidder when he says :" Clark --who is that-your boyfriend?" If you look closely you can even see Reeve(even though it is shot from the side) look up as if he is searching for an appropriate improvised response--I remember this little exchange getting a few laughs in the cinema back in the day-classic moment.

As much as I have big love for SR- I agree there are spots (even the first time) that felt a bit off.... but to me, I felt it was a plus/minus situation of having Bosworth and Routh- be Margot Kidder and Chris Reeve- and then half of the time, NOT being them but something else. Sort of like listening to a song you've loved for years with a particular artist- then having it re-recorded by another artist who sounds similar- but on every other note. I feel like it's the recasting that throws it a bit for me- I would have preferred that they got Erica Durance instead as she more emulates a young Margot Kidder. Bosworth is ok, but not great casting imo. Routh fits 90% of the requirements for Superman and sounds like Reeve, but I also always felt there were two moments that felt off in the performance- a bit with the rooftop- with the cigarettes- and the last line with Jason.

Anyone who says that Bosworth (who was a bloodyteenager at the time SR was filmed) was a good Lois is dead wrong in my opinion. No way a teenager should have a 5 year old son out of wedlock.. it's just plain wrong.
But you're right about Routh sorta being like Reeve... there are times where he is almost there but not quite and other times when he is off completely.. it's a weird experience watching SR that's for sure. Too bad Routh essentially had to pay the price for Singer's, Doherty's, and Harris's incompetence. The failure of SR was not Routh's fault at all and I feel bad for him.

I have women friends in their mid 30's that had kids and still look in their 20's, so I think that's part of why I didn't have a problem with it. But- yeah--- I know a lot of people have remarked difficulty with it. I love what Singer/Dougherty/Harris came up with...... but I've never said or felt it was perfect. The 'sortof' sequel bit does lend confusion in spots--- but the idea of keeping the spirit of the original Donner choices intact, and then moving on from the origin story I thought had to be challenging as heck--- so many things that I couldn't envision being done I was amazed at.... .but there were things I was underwhelmed with in it, or I just thought, "WRONGGG!"--- but for me, only a few bits. On another note- if they did move forward with a sequel and move forward from the backstory- wouldn't it have been cool to keep the Donnerverse going and expand from that? Oh well....

Either you love Reeve and hate MoS or like MoS and find Reeve too 'slow'. Today's movies are 'filmed video games'.

Personally for me--it is not a question of whether the movie is fast or slow or video gamey or realistic--it is a question of ,for want of a better word-- "a vibe".
IMHO Zack Snyder films just have a flat feeling to them--as if there is no charisma. Lawrence Of Arabia and 2001 Space Odyssey are very slow moving films but they have a palpable sense of cinematic charisma that seeps into every frame.
So when that soldier in Man Of Steel says "they have got Superman in tow--the alien sir--that is what they are calling him--Superman".....it is said with so little emotion that the whole dialogue just falls "flat"!
I watched STM back to back with SII in 1981 and the audience atmosphere was electric.
I watched MOS in 2013 and the audience was just in a soporific trance.

To me, there are specific great things that MOS had that I give Snyder credit for in MOS, and other specific things that ruin much of the film for me. Most of it has to do with the awkwardness of the performances in the scenes- but this is some of the same awkwardness I noticed in some of the Thau-edited RDC scenes- so, that's why I've always wondered if I would be able to enjoy a good fan edit of MOS.... and Watchmen.

MOS producer(s) said they were doing it as though a Superman mvoie had never been done. Yet, we have Jor as a sentient hologram, the S crest on his suit, then the origin story and the fight with Zod that we were hoping to see in SII - not even to mention that it's strange that Superman would fight Zod...again... Then a bully in a bar, Ma Kent stays alive and so many more stuff that is not from comics but from the Salkind movies.

very true!
I also noticed the Kent barn with the windmill is featured in one or two quick shots.
I found this obnoxious remark from Snyder:
"At the end of the movie, Christopher Reeve looks in the camera and smiles. In 1978 that made me crazy.
"I was 12 years old but it made me say 'why would you do this? You just ruined it for me because I believed that was real until that moment and now I know I'm watching a movie'." www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-22894714
And this might be the problem---Snyder just does not get it.
I may have only been 6 in 1981 but I endorsed the 3-dimensional quality a flesh and bone version of Superman offered(as seen in STM) as opposed to a film that religiously followed the 2-D quality of a comic book template.

I think I am in the Valerie Perrine camp---I hated it---still did not stop me from buying it on blu ray though!!!
Welcome back by the way---I am new here(in terms of posting) but am familiar with the history of Supermancinema having been an observer for the best part of 13 years!

I think I know what you mean. I can quite happily watch some of the action sequences in MOS in isolation and admire how cool they look. But that "action" aspect alone wont stand the test of time.
In fact some of those action moments from MOS mirror stuff from Ed Norton's Hulk from 2008.
Lots of quick edits and characters smashing into or through stuff at pace.
IMHO Hulk 2008 was pretty good as an exposition piece until it fell down under the weight of having to have a spectacular final climax that relied too much on CGI---not dissimilar to MOS IMHO.

goe
MOS's first half has a freshness to the retelling- but halfway through the Smallville battle, the movie just started to become numbing for me. I bought the bluray, but it's hard for me to rewatch, though I know many younger fans love it.
