Suprisingly, I thought the pilot good, despite a trailer that made me want to hurl.
Very much more 'Lois and Clark' approach. Melissa Benoist is definitely very different from Helen Slater. She seems more like 'the kid sister', than Slater's version, but it all hangs together pretty well (for the most part) I thought.

I watched the first two episodes and forgot about the third. I was mixed on it. The good was very good but the bad was just laughably bad. They are obviously trying to mimic Arrow and Flash by giving Kara Team Supergirl. I liked the DEO element and the way they used Henshaw and Karas sister. Not a fan of their take on Jimmy. Not the race swap I'm fine with that but the way hes presented. They totally lost the core of the character. Karas other friend is closer to the Jimmy characters personality. Cat and Catco is cheesy as heck. It really is an official version of that SNL black widow parody. It's like SNL predicted the future. The Supergirl costume is great. Shows how stupid the last few comic book outfits really are. The tv suit makes her look sexy without looking like a cheap streetwalker. Benoist was a great casting choice. Don't like how they've made Kara such a Clark Kent clone but beyond that she has this great girl next door quality the character should have.
The effects are solid for a tv budget. I think I like the tv shows take on krypton more than Snyder's. The escaped phantom zoned thing is kind of lazy. Comes off as a cheap lazy way to do freaks of the week like Smallville or the heckmouth demons in Buffy. So formulaic. They already have a problem with the way they use Superman. People complain about the Avengers not being together when a major threat arises but to me this is ten times worse. Are we to believe of Kara is up against some serious world threatening attacks superman won't ever show up to lend a hand. I know he wanted her to be her own hero but sometimes every hero needs help. Even him. They're going to have to do some serious hoop jumping to deal with that problem.
With some work the show could be something special. Hopefully it can shed some of those stereotypical elements and become something more respectable because I really like their take on Supergirl the hero as well as some of the other elements of the show. There are some of the same problems the Slater movie had but it's also already improved on the Slater movie in some areas.

Totally agree on Jimmy--- the irritating thing is that they seemed to really design him to be the 'hunk' so that young girls could drool over him. That's not Jimmy. Jimmy is the fanboy. The effects are amazing for a tv budget. Reportedly Berlianti and company chose this for CBS because CBS has a higher budget than the CW. I like the idea of Phantom Zone criminals needing to be rounded up quietly, though- yeah, it is a big thing to say that they wouldn't ask for Superman's help.... but.... I didn't have a problem with Smallville with the freak of the week so much as the overemphasis on Clana and no costume. It's a pity Supergirl's numbers keep falling.... if it had stayed and/or grown, I think one thing that would have been cool was to see the Legion in full costume on the show.... but either the budget probably will be reduced or this show might not even get a second season, so probably unlikely. Anyhow, it was better than the total disaster I was anticipating.

It's still early so the show could turn it around but I had a feeling it would be hard for the show to keep its audience. The reason DC shows last as long on the CW is because the ratings standard is lower and the shows cost less. I was never sure if Supergirl as it is was enough of a draw for a major network. Human Target and Constantine already failed on two of the big four networks. You'd think WB would have learned.
Then You've got the tv and movie uinverses not only seperate but pulling in different creative directions. Supergirl can't even use some of the appeal the movie superman might have. They wouldn't even need to use the character on screen for that. Agents of Shield and Agent Carter can at least use some of the films good will. Supergirl can't even do that. If worst comes to worst CBS would be smart to try to use some of Arrow and Flashs steam to keep Supergirl moving. That was never an option for Constantine while it was on NBC but CBS and The CW have stronger ties.

There apparently was another big dip in ratings for the show. Maybe they should move it to the CW, but they'd definitely have to slash the budget.
Just was hoping for the Legion to make an appearance, probably less and less likely...

What did you think about this CAM? Again it's a shame the universes are seperate. David Harewood seems like a good choice for the Manhunter.

I haven't seen any of this show. Is it better than MoS?

After years of being frustrated at the (unnecessary) 'no-costume' rule on Smallville, oh, man--- digging this stage of Hollywood FINALLY being ok with costumes.

I haven't seen any of this show. Is it better than MoS? Like "Arrow", there are parts I like, parts (and characters) I don't care for. But... It's not bad. It's not perfect, but I think they get enough right that I'm happy with its existence. Like I said, I'm REALLLY hoping it does well for a costumed version of the Legion.

Watched the pilot but didn't really like it overall. It was too cheesy for me. I liked the lead actress as Kara, but the acting is so over the top and Jimmy is AWFUL. So I didn't keep watching..
"Not a fan of their take on Jimmy. Not the race swap I'm fine with that but the way hes presented. They totally lost the core of the character."
Yup!

That's one thing that keeps it from being better. The cheesiness. In the right doses that could be a pro instead of a con but they overdo it in the worst ways. Karas aunt had some of the worst overacting on Mondays episode. Had to LOL.

It might be a bit more costly, but I usually wait until the dvd comes out to watch the whole thing, without commercials, so I see bits and pieces here and there, if I know I"m going to eventually buy it.
I agree 1000% about Jimmy- he's not a hunk. He's a goofy fanboy conduit. (Something I was hoping that Agent Coulson was going to be on Agents of Shield, but they had other plans)
But... It's watchable, like much of the rest of Berlianti's productions- the best one being Flash, but even then.... I keep holding up the best of the Star Trek Next Gen and Deep Space Nine series as models of what's possible in scifi/fantasy on tv, and even at its best, I rarely find any of Berlianti's stuff more than just 'entertaining'.... whereas with the best of DS9 and Next Gen, there'd be something to think about as well for a few days at their best.
Anyhow--- I'm not sure how long the series will last, so just enjoying it while it's there. I think with the overflow of superhero tv shows now, every superhero show is walking on uncertain ice...

All these shows, even at their best, are too formulaic to the point that it's painfully obvious how much cutting and pasting they're doing. Oliver has team Arrow, Barry has team Flash, and now Kara has team Supergirl. Could they at least TRY to throw a curveball in there somewhere? They've just taken the Smallville model and improved it. You can see everything coming from a mile away. I'm shocked Arrow hasn't pulled the nostalgia casting card and brought in Justin Hartley for something.

Agreed. I wouldn't mind formula so much, if they had storylines that just burn in one's head and make it unforgettable- but the bar seems to be 'very watchable' though somewhat forgettable right now....

I agree, all of these CW superhero shows are entertaining, sometimes good, but so formulaic most of the time it kind of bores me. They try something good with the character but reverse it too soon to status quo. They have enough heart, good action scenes and really good FX, so it's.. watchable. But it just doesn't captivates my imagination like a few others shows like Trek and Doctor Who have.

Berlianti's shows at best get you hooked, but are pretty empty substancewise, when it doesn't have to be.

Catching bits and pieces of episodes:
"Bizzarro" was ok- but a bit of a letdown. They looked like they might have been on to something in the story, but the time got wasted on the soap stuff. ;p
Next week's looks like a riff on Alan Moore's "For the Man who has everything" from the trailer. Hm.

This just in:
Grant Justin's Flash is making a guest appearance on Supergirl. Good going, Berlianti!
I might forgive you for "Green Lantern" after all.... nah.

I wish Supergirl was set in the same dimension/universe as Flash and Arrow but I'll take what I can get. Still setting it on an alternate earth is a biz lazy and shows they didn't plan ahead. Setting the shows in different dimensions makes some potential meetings a bit harder. Still it should be fun and hopefully it's a semi regular thing. The Constantine guest spot on Arrow was cool and the Berlanti verse really has a leg up on the movies after this.
I liked the Bizarro episode in concept but the execution could have been better. I don't take Lord very seriously as a villian. Bizarro Supergirl looked pretty good. I love the J'onn/White Martians flashback. That looked pretty darn good for tv. Someone should show it to Goyer and tell him to go f*** himself.

Well, I'm mainly impressed because the two shows are on competing networks! It's happened I think ONCE with "Ally McBeal" and "The Practice" years ago, but I have no clue how they were able to convince the competing networks to okay this. Now..... if Supergirl has a crossover with Agents of Shield, that'd REALLY be something!

CBS has a stake in the CW. They're the C Next to Warner Bros W after UPN merged with the WB network. If it wasnt for that this crossover would be harder to make happen. I don't think you'll ever see Gotham cross over in the same way.

I did not know that! Interesting! Thanks!
The prior crossover between ABC tv and Fox for the Practice/Ally McBeal shows I don't think had the same relationship, but if I were to guess, it'd be that David Kelley was a 'hot' tv producer at the time and maybe they wanted to keep him happy...

We only got Constantine on Arrow after the show was cancelled
Did you watch For The Girl Who Has Everything? I really liked it even though I think the show runners missed the point of the title. Lots of big stuff happened in the episode.

I missed it- but since I'm planning on getting the bluray, not too worried... but snippets here and there seeing the production values make me grin. Berlianti's use of DC characters all around is my kryptonite- and they're not always wearing jackets and jeans, but actual costumes! (Hi Smallville) If he can deliver the Legion of Supeheroes on a two-part episode, I'll finally forgive him for Green Lantern.
