I'm just glad that Marvel Studios exist and that Singer is still (for now, though one rumor said that X-men is going to Marvel Studios)- with the X-men. If you see Snyder's "Sucker Punch" that he's proud of writing and directing, I think (to me) it shows he REALLY doesn't get it.* (*though I do know people that love that movie) At least there's pretty eye candy with Snyder's movies..... Will be interesting to see how long the Snyder train runs, and if the box office 'mark' is still being passed on BvS that he's in the 'safe from being fired' zone....

Snyders talk of following the comics and thus the "true canon" was offensively stupid to me. Anyone who knows anything about comics knows there is no solid true canon. Maybe some kind of overarching set of rules and ideas (and even those aren't set in stone) but the comics canon is always changing and growing and evolving. Superman flying isn't from the comics. Jor El wearing an S isn't from the comics. Mercy graves isn't from the comics. All those things are canon immigrants. Comics are influenced by many sources including adaptations in other media. These characters are the sum of all their history from comics, radio, animation, television, movies, video games, etc. It's always been about cherry picking what works best from different eras and different mediums.

This is the Snyder remark that pissed me off the most:

Could not agree more and perfectly said. Pete Jackson dissed the 1976 King Kong ......but his Kong 2005 version borrows heavily from the 76' version more than the 1933 one! Snyder does the same with STM.....

Thanks, Dejan. I wouldn't mind so much if he and Goyer didn't insult people who don't like their movies and insult their intelligence with bs excuses like the ones he comes up with. I'm still waiting on someone to make sense of that garbage they came out of his mouth while promoting MOS in Japan.
I like the 76 Kong Btw. I think it was the first one I ever saw growing up. I need to get around to watching the sequel. Jackson's movie had some bad pacing in spots even though I liked it. That seems to be his biggest problem after the LOTR trilogy.

I think the only way Snyder will be shown the door is if the boxoffice continues to disappoint WB and the shareholders- But... at the same time, I doubt the negative reviews of both MOS and BvS are helping Snyder get more love from the studio, either....

It'll be interesting to see how well WW and SS do but if JL underperforms it's over. I do think bvs's bad reviews and the mixed reception of MOS hurt BvS's box office. The same thing could happen with JL. DC's three biggest icons together didn't guarantee the kind of money WB was hoping for so adding three more lesser known characters doesn't guarentee JL's box office eight. It could be the same or even less than BvS depending on if some more people stay way.

After seeing so many great moments with various characters in Civil War, I'd say that the novelty of a superhero group in a big budget movie is not enough. Avengers 1 and 2 did it.... with all the buildup of positive movies supporting the characters. I agree.... having superheroes that aren't that well known played by a cast we're not that familiar with, doesn't seem to be a recipe to bring butts to seats.

OH you've seen it? Review CAM!
I agree though. It's not as big a deal after avengers. It's not the first time we've seen something like this anymore and unlike the avengers Justice league won't have as big a buildup in films and it wasn't kicked off with a film as well recieved as Iron Man was. Some people will still have the bad taste of MOS and BvS in their mouths. Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad may help but those movies aren't directed by Simple Zack.

Bizzarely, I think Wonder Woman would have been perfect for Snyder to direct, if done with a narrator a la 300....

Visually yes. He's done well with that kind of look in 300 and it's clear that inspired her costume design. I think he'd miss a lot of what makes the character work.

If Sucker Punch (which he so proudly wrote and directed), Snyder would have made all the Amazons sexy strippers because it has deep meaning to him. Maybe Snyder is best suited to superhero porn parodies. To this, I say you can find no better director than Snyder for those.

Well he did want to make his Dawn of the Dead 2 about rape zombies. That should tell you something.

I think at this point, I don't even mind so much that Snyder is making garbage, but how much he goes on and on about how great his stuff is. Still.... with all the critical bashing, and with all the critical praise of Marvel's stuff--- he can't say that those critics 'just don't like superhero films'- so he has to be at least AWARE of something askew.... and hopefully he'll keep his pretentious statements about his own work to himself.

Oh yeah. I don't mind schlock. I love good schlock. That's why I respect Bay more than Snyder. Nah doesn't pretend his big budget action movies are deep complex adult pieces of dramatic entertainment. He admits they're big dumb popcorn movies. Snyder acts like he's making well written well acted classics when they're really dumb popcorn movies masquerading as dramas.
Give me a good Troma or Full Moon movie and I'm all over it. That's why I'll watch The Toxic Avenger before I watch MOS every time.

While I read that interview where he says he's a good businessman (essentially) and gives the audiences what they want- part of me also cringed while grudgingly admiring his honesty ... mostly because of what I see onscreen. Though.... I love his "The Rock" film. Really, really love it. The others- not so much.

I also love The Rock.
In fact, I would consider it to be the last of the "intelligent" action thrillers for a long time.
Die Hard started a great trend, and I think The Rock was the last of that era. After that, I just remember lots of mindless action movies.
I can't think of anything that really stands out after then until Taken.

While there are a couple of goofball moments in "The Rock", it's just one of those movies where everything clicked for me- concept, casting, humor, visuals- In some ways I'm disappointed that there wasn't the sequel that Bay says was planned, but if it wasn't going to be as good as this one, maybe it's better it didn't happen. Someone once described it as the 'unofficial Connery James Bond Returns' movie, and I agree- though the pairing of Connery and Cage in those roles were just comedy genius. Have to give big props to Cage for allowing himself to look like a doofus next to Connery. Even in smaller scenes, some great actors actually shone more here in supporting roles (Ed Harris, Michael Behn, etc.)

Like Snyder he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer but I don't feel like Bay is insulting by belittling the fans of the source material as much as Snyder and he doesn't act like he's creating the next America cinema classic. Bay is Snyder but better. His best films blow Snyders away but he doesn't buy into his own hype the way Snyder does. If you want to make popcorn movies that's cool but don't act like they're more than that.

The big budget mainstream theatrically released action movie as we know it is dead and it's kind of sad. What is considered the top kind of action hero has changed in the cgi age. You can have anyone do anything now. The movie magic is gone. I think the Bourne movies set the trend for today's action movies but I think most directors learned the wrong lessons from those films. We've gotten away from the Everyman hero AND the action man hero. Bad Boys 2 is the last old school style action Film I can remember off the top of my head.

Zimmers soundtrack for The Rock would have made a nice superman theme.

Great point with CGI kind of killing the magic of things. There was an excellent Jackie Chan documentary where he showed all of his 'tricks' in the past, but acknowledged that his stunts at that time were no longer awe-inspiring because of the bluescreen tech back then. Now- the 'wow' of CGI I think fits perfectly with superhero material. KNOWING that it's all fake and generated by the computer, the best use I think of CGI is with fantasy and superhero material- that has to push the story further in many ways and create its own separate reality, so to speak. Though- I have to tip my hat at the Roussos for mixing and matching practical with CGI in a way to have made CIVIL WAR's action far more exciting than AVENGERS 2, in many ways.

Zimmers soundtrack for The Rock would have made a nice superman theme. Interesting... I love The ROck and Backdraft soundtracks, but it's hard for me to envision the positivity of Superman. To me, it feels more like heroism and tragedy. But, all subjective, of course...
