@ Metallo
Even with the color changes i would definitely recommend the blu rays.
That shot you are referring too from SIII with Supes flying towards the canyon.......I have the same feelings as you .....it looks bad.
I have a couple of theories.
My suspicion is that it is/was an unused original plate from the Donner production( for the chasing missile sequence).......hence the reason why it looks degraded.
As Donner/Baird had not used it for STM......maybe it was discarded in 1978 without much thought to preservation.....until Lester's team scooped it out of the bin in 1982/83.
Another reason could be is that it seems to be running in reverse.
Again the original plate would have been run in the optical printer backwards..... with a new print being struck off it....causing a loss in resolution.
Then that new print would have been combined with the blue screen "Supes flying" element(again in the optical printer) again inducing a loss in resolution.

The reason I held off on the blurays for so long was because the color timing looked way off to me. The reds looked almost orange. It just looked wrong to me. The colours on the bluray are pretty bad. Teal and orange overload and a lot of blown out whites. The best are the 2001 version of STM and the Donner Cut. I've released a recoloured bluray of Superman 4 and have Superman 3 in the works. New menus, laserdisc PCM audio, and isolated score. If anyone wants to check them out feel free to PM me. I remember getting Ghostbusters on bluray free with the PS3 game. It looked like poop. Visible matte boxes around the effects, looked like a really lazy rush job. The new bluray looks excellent from the screens I've seen.

Visible wires or not, those flying shots of Reeve still look incredible. How is it that MoS was made 30 years after Superman 3, yet the flying looked worse and less believable? yes. It is the biggest sin in Snyder's films. How little emphasis there is on the romance of flying(take offs, landings,POV of supes in the chasing missile from STM ,flying through canyon in SIII or flying towards FOS in SII with Lois ect ect) The same could be leveled at SR. Snyder spent a whole sequence in DOJ of batman chasing the bad guys in his batmobile even though it did not actually serve the story one iota! But hey it looks cool. There are next to no shots of Supes flying in any real detail. Snyder just does not get it.

When Superman lands outside the Capitol Building after its blown up, with a survivor. Its very brief, but he lands using practical effects and it's not in slow mo, or some overly artsy "moment" that they linger on. Its Superman, looking like Superman, doing a Superman thing. Its as close to replicating the great practical take off and landings of the Reeve movies, and they cut it out of the theatrical release.

Yes i think i know the one having just watched the Ultimate edition. Should not have been cut out of the theatrical version from a storytelling point of view either(as you say...Superman doing a Superman thing) It may be symptomatic of the times we live in. They do wire work in MOS and DOJ.....but from what i can tell the majority(if not all of it) seems to be done in the studio against a green backing. Harking back to STM.SII & SIII they would do the wire work in the streets of New York ,Niagra Falls,Calgary ect ect. It could be that in order to preserve the secrecy(because of the internet and mobile phones) the film makers feel constrained to shoot pivotal flying scenes in the studio these days so as to prevent any unwarranted leaks. That scene at the beginning of SIII when he saves the man drowning with that majestic fly over the street......in the making of docu.....there were literally hundreds of onlookers off camera. Unthinkable to shoot flying scenes like that in DOJ in the open streets now.

I also held off on the original release because it looked pretty substandard, including lack of new extras. Predator is another movie I'm waiting to get the proper treatment. It was always a grainy film but the DNR made the last release unwatchable.

The fact and you know exactly what I'm talking a of shows how bad it is. It's superman iv bad isn't it? I eventually got the blurays because I found them cheap. Surprisingly IV impressed me most. It's strange seeing it without most of the wires and it looks like they adjusted the brightness in some scenes because some of the matte lines aren't as visible and the black curtain on the moon isn't noticable anymore. Never thought they'd put any effort into improving a bomb yet they did simple stuff I've wanted for years. The colors tho...gah. It's a trade off.

Man...not just that but even with the one Batmobile chase scene it doesn't get the screen time and great moments the BurtonMobile got in the 89 Batman movie. Did you notice BVS has no wider frame extended flying sequences? You usually see him take off or land and that's it. Only wide flying poop I can remember is the shots of him flying at Doomsday at the end. Christ, Supergirl gets better flying moments on tv every week. It's like Snyder isn't interested in those kinds of moments and because the movies are so overstuffed there is no time to appreciate or even see moments like that.

Waxy faced Arnie is a big fail.

Ah that was the 2009 release. I passed on that one because I wasn't impressed. The 30th anniversary release was good. That's the one I own. Well worth it. I'm not sure if the most recent release is another upgrade in terms of picture but I know it's got some more extras.
Highlander got a 4K release this year and while I probably will buy it I'm concerned with how the transfer will look.
