I think the one overarching thing people wish we'd gotten is more seiousness. Of Donner had directed we would have. When o was a kid I noticed visual differences but a lot of movies had that. I never would have known anything else was wrong at a young age. As a kid I enjoyed it. It wasn't until later when I read stuff like Starlog and eventually the Internet came along that I knew this whole story. SII as it is is flawed but entertaining. The Donner cut is an interesting curiosity or suppliment but as a film it's just not satisfying enough. If it wasn't so stringent on axing out so much of the Lester footage, when there wasn't enough Donner footage to compensate- it might have been more satisfying as a film experience.... even if it meant having to compromise the characters and story more towards Lester's rewrite. You'e right.... as is, it doesn't feel like a completed film with all the cuts and unshot footage, etc.

That's how I felt. The Donner cut even cut out stuff that would have made of an overall better movie.

Any true "Donner Cut" needs to have 4 essential things: 1.) Window 2.) Blanks 3.) Brando De 4.) Brando Re Without hitting these 4 crucial bullets points it's just not Donner's film. Put in as much Lester footage as necessary as long as these 4 elements are kept. I've never seen the IRC but yes I would agree that would probably be at least superior to SII: TAC

I've never seen the IRC but yes I would agree that would probably be at least superior to SII: TAC What the IRC had in its favor to make it feel more like a Donner cut: Some examples: 1.)Extended Donner bits with the Phantom Zone Criminals- a few moments here and there, (some of these went into the RDC, but not enough imo) but VERY nice. 2.)Five deleted Donner scenes (two of which are in the RDC, but not as well edited as in the IRC): a) Villains entering the FOS b) Arctic Police c) Destroying the FOS by Supes/talk w/Lois d) Balcony scene with Supes and Lois e) Supes outpacing a Concorde Airplane (though this is a deleted from STM) 3.)A satisfying flow that the RDC lacks by shortchanging too many scenes, even when/if it goes a little overboard for the bad Lester parts... what's nice is that the extra Donner stuff towards the end makes up for it. Hence, fan cuts that are able to restore more of the Donner stuff from the RDC (particularly as you mentioned, the DP jump, Depowering and Repowering scenes by Donner) and trim out the really bad Lester stuff in the theatrical seem to be the best solution (as of right now). If not that, then the IRC for SII feels like the best Donner version of SII imo. If not a fan cut, then imo

Agree with all the ideas being expressed above.
On a slightly different but still related note:
We all know about the save the foxes beginning that actually precedes the daily planet window jump stuff in the original Mank SII script.
Relooking at Lester's SII.
The first shot of Supes flying into the French countryside looks to me like the English countryside!(I live in England). To be fair the french countryside would not look that different but still............
So is that actual shot lensed by Donner.
Or maybe the countryside "plate" was lensed by Donner in 1977/78 and Lester filmed Reeve against a bluescreen in 1979 and superimposed that component over the country side plate to complete the shot.
Thoughts?!
