I question the validity of Thau's claims that Baird actually did any editing on Superman II. The Making of Superman II documentary featured Victor Smith editing the Donner portion of the final Fortress scene with the narrator stating that he had footage from years before to work with. Baird was never credited in the theatrical cut. Donner said there was no workprint of his work in Superman II, so there's no proof at all that Donner's work was cut by Baird. I think it was an excuse to account for why a lot of Donner's scene are cut nearly the same as they were in the theatrical and Restored International Cut.

I forget which interviews had mentioned that the original workflow (before they decided to just focus on finishing STM and not both)--- was that there were two edit rooms for Baird- one for STM, one for SII- and that he would start to edit scenes as they came in. The style of how Donner's scenes look in SII look compared to STM look incredibly similar- as well as sequences that have been done in some of the other collaborations between Donner and Baird. Could it have been Victor Smith's editing for SII instead of Baird? I shrug. Who knows, unless one is close to production? Personally, whoever cut Donner's footage in SII in my opinion is top-notch. My own feeling is that it's Baird, but I have no proof.

They could have simply been working on assembly footage. There was what appeared to be a workprint version of the Luthor's lair scene ("Target zero right... here") that was included in one of those documentaries. That was vastly different from what appeared in the final cut.

That was vastly different from what appeared in the final cut. With the time crunch, I'd be suprised if it was Victor Smith that edited all of it.... But... As I said, whoever cut those Donner sequences in SII did a spectacular job. It's sad how most of the 'alternate' shots that Thau used in the final FOS sequence or earlier seemed less interesting. It could have been (as he's mentioned) some footage being too damaged to use, but in re-watching the 'new' RDC again and again, it's given me both appreciation for some of the things he may have tried for--- but also renewed irriation at some of what I feel were sillier and wasteful choices (re-editing the previously scored music rarely was better, but only worse in both RDC versions).
