That's unfortunate if true.
IMDB has Allan Heinberg and Geoff Johns credited with the screenplay- "Zack Snyder and Allan Heinberg" for the story.
The basic plot (I assume from BVS):
Is probably (Pure speculation so it's not real spoilers):
WW's origin- But, of course, set in WW1's era instead of WW2.
During the battle- (Or at the end of it)- presumably, Steve Trevor gets killed & the way he's killed convinces her to stay in the shadows--- until BvS starts.
To me, it sounds okay enough (I forgive the WW2 turned into WW1 as its easier for people to buy into as less is remembered on it).... so how can it be botched so badly?
Guess we'll see...

I like the WWI setting. The film is obviously a mix of what we saw in Thor and Captain America TFA but they have to make it unique from TFA thus we get WWI instead of WWII. But it all fits the character and what I think is the plot of the movie. The Women's sufferage movement started to make headway right around the time of WWI and with this being a female driven story it's understandable that they'd want to have that backdrop of women's rights and empowerment.
Wonder Woman is supposed to be the amazons ambassador for peace in mans world. World War I was called the war to end all wars because it was so horrific. It was the first major war where soldiers were horribly disfigured but survived because of the advancements in 20th century medicine and surgery. It was the war that used chemical warfare with devestating effects. It was witnessing all these horrors that probably caused Diana to retreat from mans world back to Themyscara.
I'm guessing that Ares, the god of war, is the main villain and he's manipulating events during the war to feed off the violence and hatred. The war to end all wars is the perfect environment for him to thrive in. He's probably had a hand in the development of new chemical weapons that make it worse. Part of Diana's mission will be to defeat Ares.

Part of Diana's mission will be to defeat Ares. While there's a lot I love in Cap TFA, the (mis)use of Red Skull was a lost opportunity, I thought. I know the dilemma in using real wars in superhero properties is/was that you can't have the hero punch out Hitler or whatnot 'for real'- so Cap focusing on a splinter group with the Red Skull was clever.... except it wasn't all that interesting because they never really made Red Skull that real a threat or not enough of a 'dark mirror' of who Cap could have turned into. (Winter Soldier is conceptually a much better version of that, why I thought Cap 2 worked much better in the villain dept.) I'm so hoping that the rumors are wrong on the quality of the WW movie. Donner and Mank always said that if they could get the love story right in STM, that the rest of the movie would be solved. James Cameron has always said that ALL of his movies are love stories. Here's hoping we care enough about the characters that it's pulled off right.... but with Snyder credited for the story, I dunno...

I Red Skull was a 'safe' villain that didn't really scare kids. That seems to be Marvel's motto.... and weakness at the same time. They curb themselves to make sure all members of the family can go see a Marvel film. On the flip side, DC wants to make sure all of their superhero films have heroes that are just as dark and sociopathic as their villains, so that families can scratch their heads to the suitability of their films lately, it seems. Oh well...
