I have to remind myself I assumed doom and gloom over the X-men movie when the spandex left- but was shocked how good it was...
With the "S" James Gunn chose- maybe the movie will be great- but.... much like removing the red shorts- it's an automatic groan- was the change REALLY necessary? It's like deciding turning Batman's chest symbol into a cat or a rat is a good idea...

I guess there has never been a film just called Superman. You know the title of the 2013 flick Man of Steel was just today rip off The Dark Knight Glad they’re using a simple title. I wouldn't have minded "Superman: The Last Son of Krypton"- and more subtitles after to give it a feeling of sequential chapters... and that they're starting from the beginning... but maybe Gunn isn't? We know there are other heroes already, so... who knows?

Lois was the one who needed to be punched out. She lied about who Jason’s father was…. who does that? Was she too embarrassed to reveal to the world that she rode Kal Els steel cock? Maybe since Lois was only 22 years old and had a 5 year old kid meant that she had sex at 17 which is messed up. And another thing…. Lois was saved by Superman probably 47 times at the point yet she had the audacity to say the world doesn’t need Superman? If I were Superman I’d have taken her flying and dropped her! Well.... another reason I wanted to see the sequel was to see how they were going to handle Lois' explaining a lot to the guys in her life. If the writing were graceful, it'd still be a challenge given the situations.

To this day, I'm open to be proven wrong (I loved the original trailer to MOS, not the movie)- but so far, only felt that Donner and Singer had the best take & the best update take....
Some of the sillier stuff, like multiple 's's on the costume, duller color, etc- I give a pass to, because they're pretty minor changes compared to what was to follow- and he kept the Donner stuff (mostly) as canon.

Just saw T2 theatrical at "Flashback Cinema" (far cheaper than the Fathom events)- thought about this thread at the same time.
First off, imo the extended director's cut (as well as Aliens' extended director's cut) is much better- though the original was fine as it was... and I'd seen it a billion times- so I think the problem is knowing that both Arnold's and Linda's characters were going to make it to the end (didn't know that the first time I saw it) makes it feel like a chase scene or two too long in rewatching a billion and one times.
To me, Cameron's crowning achievements are: Aliens & Terminator 2 extended cuts and (you may laugh, that's fine) the theatrical of Titanic. His other films are good, but... that's a much longer post.
The thing in watching the action sequences in T2 again.... made me wonder about what his Spiderman would have looked like, during this time in his filmmaking career. It's like every second is worth framing. I imagine Spiderman would have been the same.
In any case, also made me think of what he might have done (naturally) with Superman. Cameron has said (much like Donner) that his films are essentially love stories and (much like Donner) is a perfectionist.
Would have been interesting to hear what his thoughts were on Donner's Superman. I do know he keeps saying when he saw Star Wars, he was mad because it was the film he wanted to make.... but he also grew up wanting to be a comic book artist, so--- very curious.... though it's odd to hear him criticize Marvel, given his early comic book love.

It seems proper that WB ends up with the rights sorta/kinda.... especially if the movie has any STM footage as part of it.

Sucked big time. Caused all kinds of problems. Was the start of a huge mess for WB and DC. ALL the fears of Snyder proved to be accurate. My main thing from it all was- bummed that it made sure the SR sequel wasn't going to happen. On the flip side, I did like the first WW movie (the first half mainly) and the Flash movie I REAAALLLY liked. The 4 hour Snyder cut- except for the stuff with Amy Adams, I actually did like it enough. Having said that- Man of Steel's bad scenes..... really killed it.

On one hand, horrified horrified horrified at AI and the lack of controls over the damage it can cause...
On the other hand...
If anyone knows/has access to AI, can they finally restore the missing unshot Donner scenes and make a fan cut?

While I'm horrified at the explosion of AI--- I admit I have been thinking about that possibility of filling in the blanks of Donner's SII- ever since face replacement software existed. Impossible that the studio would do this- but I could see an ambitious fan cutter with AI skills tackling this... They brought George Carlin back from the dead they can do the same with Reeve and Kidder. Plus AI could redo all the Kidder scenes when she’s Skeleton Rat Lois and replace her with Hot Donner Diner Lois. They brought Reeve back in the Flash.... but if I gave the director the benefit of the doubt by his claims that the CGI was intentionally 'overly stylish' and not meant to be 100 percent real--- is this the extent of what CGI/AI can create right now? But then again.... look at season 2 of the Mandelorian with the much improved 'young' Mark Hamill. At the same time- with all the (scarily) fast improvements with AI- If it has to happen, then it would be nice to see a fan good at AI recreate those missing DOnner scenes and upload it for all the enjoy.

I was watching Terminator 2 and it occurred to me that the scene where Sarah nearly kills Dyson but stops herself was similar to the scene in Batman V Superman where Batman nearly kills Superman. Not exactly the same obviously but similar. I’d never made the connection before but the set ups and motivations are very similar in some ways. Sarah sees Dyson as a threat to the world and the human race and dehumanizes him so that she can kill him and change the future. Batman sees Superman as a threat to the world and the human race and dehumanizes him so that he can kill him and change the future. Batman and Sarah both even have dreams and premonitions about apocalyptic futures that bolster them on in their missions. Miles doesn’t beg for his own life but begs that his family be spared. Superman doesn’t beg for his life but is concerned about the life of his mother. Both selfless when facing death. It’s something that humanizes both potential victims. In both cases Sarah and Batman realize that they have become the bad guys, the killers, the threat about to execute an innocent person. In Sarah’s case she’s become the thing she was afraid of for so long: the human equivalent of a terminator. But why did the scene work so well in T2 but become the butt of endless memes, jokes, and ridicule after BVS? It’s all about execution. Everyone knew what they were trying to do with the scene in BVS but it’s so awkward and forced. It’s built on cheap lazy ideas. Batman makes his choice to stop after Lois intervenes. Sarah stops herself before John gets there. It made her more sympathetic somehow as well as a deeper thinking character. Batman is supposed to be brilliant but throughout BVS he comes off as an easily manipulated fool. Batman’s motivation also makes less sense because he doesn’t know for sure what will happen while Sarah does. It makes her feelings and actions more understandable even if what she was about to do was wrong. It creates a more powerful emotional conflict for her and the audience. Cameron was a better storyteller and got the perfect performances out of his actors to convey what they were feeling and thinking. In T2 they don’t even use exact words to tell you what’s going on internally while in BVS it’s almost spelled out for you with Lois’s line “it’s his mother’s name.” Interesting post.... I actually liked BVS - compared to MOS. But in the same way that I enjoyed FF #2- the first movie set the bar low enough that I was able to enjoy the sequel more by lowered expectations.

Good question. Our periods are 55 minutes, so they didn't have a choice to sit through the whole thing. Tomorrow I will ask if they want to continue watching it. If so, we still wouldn't finish it until Wednesday. Did they choose to watch the rest of the movie? Not that there's any deadline, but.... should this question have popped up 10 years earlier?

Where is AI Terrence Stamp Sarah Douglas and Jack OHalloran? The only plus I can think of for AI is that it would be cheap to complete SII the way it should have been.... but with WB not seeming to have interest in boosting physical media.... *sigh*

Do they make Flashpoint? What if that is met with the same reception as JL and audiences don't show up? Something like that would cost big money if they do it even close to the scale of the comic book story. Lots of questions. Well we know how this turned out now. It's a pity, as I really thought the movie was really good, enough to have wanted to see a sequel or an extended cut.

I don't fault trying to save money.... if the movie doesn't suffer for it. Lester wanted to do a Mel Brooks-like comedy with SII and SIII. While I love Lester's Three Musketeers (which had a lot of humor in it)- to this day, I just don't think he was the right guy to direct a Superman movie in the way that Donner had set the standard. I'd be suprised if Reeve had asked Lester to come back for IV- but it's telling that he went to Donner and Mank rather than Lester to try to restore quality. Lester was obsessed about doing things on the cheap. Superman 3 looks like a made for TV movie. It’s aged far worse than STM and S2. Lester was so darn cheap he didn’t even buy a shirt and directed the whole movie shirtless forcing the cast and crew to view his hairy chest all day. This was workplace harassment and Lester should be cancelled. lol!

Superman III special hosted by Leonard Nimoy. Great find, but.... for some reason, is it just me, or does Chris Reeve seem a bit sad while talking about the film that he's making? I know there was an article after the movie had come out where Reeve was a bit irritated at some aspects of production (We do know he wasn't crazy about Superman having to share the story with Richard Pryor's character, and I don't blame him- the creators were just trying to cash in on Pryor's popularity to the expense of focusing on Superman in III)- but, I didn't expect to feel this vibe even he's in an on-set interview. He's cordial and all, but (and maybe it's just me) this interview feels different from the other interviews he had done for SII and STM...

Can you imagine an AI scene of the finished blank bullets scene? Villains ruling the world? The X- Rated sex scene?? The Metro Battle? The technology is just about here to re-create the finished Donner SII. I computer can download all the existing Reeve and Kidder footage and Manks SII script and perfectly re-create the SII we would have gotten had Donner not been fired. Selutron is outdated and irrelevant human being now and his “great” rotoscoping skills are worthless. He should look into a new career panhandling outside a gas station in Alaska. When will the completed AI Donner Superman 2 be released?? While I'm horrified at the explosion of AI--- I admit I have been thinking about that possibility of filling in the blanks of Donner's SII- ever since face replacement software existed. Impossible that the studio would do this- but I could see an ambitious fan cutter with AI skills tackling this...
