IMO, Reeve's suit was fine FOR ITS TIME. It doesn't work for live action anymore. It's way to bright, and the material is dated as well.

Too bright? Sure, if you want everything to be brown now. I hate brown. 20 years ago, all the video games had bright, vibrant colors. Now they're all shades of brown and gritty.
Get rid of those damn filters and let's see some bright colors again.

yeah, loosing the filters would help. Its amazing how different the suit looks in some behind the scenes pics.
In this day in age the suit DID need the colors muted SOME, not as much as what Singer did. It definitely needed the detail. In this age of Spider-man and X-men the people expect something a little more detailed than what Reeve wore. I love it...but we all know that sacred target demo they studios go after would be making gay jokes or cheap jokes in 5 minutes if they used Reeves suit.

Rouths suit was brown to me... I don't get it... Spiderman had a brilliant red costume why couldn't Superman? Hey downwithrouth exactly what didn't you like about SR? Do you at least respect what SR was trying to be and were just SORELY disappointed (like me) because you wanted to like it but couldn't? Or do you just hate it for other reasons?

Spider-mans movie suit was less faithful to the spirit of the character than Rouths Superman suit. the colors in the Spider-man suit have changed over the years too Sometimes the blue is darker sometimes the red is more intense.
Exactly.

No I just didn't realize that in some Superman comics he wears an off the shoulder blouse! I'll be damned he does! Prolly to accommodate his man boobs... either that or he just likes blouses...

jimbo said, "Too bright? Sure, if you want everything to be brown now. I hate brown. 20 years ago, all the video games had bright, vibrant colors. It just looks a little bit "cheesy" and cartoony to me now (the suit, not Chris. He actually makes it work cuz well, he looked and inhabited the part SO well). But I agree that the way the SR suit looked in some scenes was too dark/brown. And that's just not right either, especially for a character as bright and positive as Supes. I like the colors on the comicbook Supes below. It's just the right balance.

we HAVE to get over our love affair with spandex. it was exotic in the 70's- it's cheesy now.
the superman suit is ALIEN- and therefore MUST look like exotic material , not of this earth.
spandex you can see on any fatass at any walmart.

Found this today. This pic was taken in Chicago last year. I assume they got dressed like that for the Superman festival in Metropolis. Link: www.picturedujour.com/?p=239And IMO, the SR suit looks awesome. I love it! Even on that body. ;D The girl looks good too. They seem to be having such a good time. You know, I really wanna go to that festival some day soon. Has anyone from this forum been there? They look so cool!

The texture pattern on the bblue certainly gives it an interesting look. One thing I really liked considering there's so much blue surface area. The blue seems to pop a bit.
The darker red certainly creates an interesting contrast on it.

Yknow, the Blue was originally Black in Steve Ditko's drawings, but the blue offset was used, so it eventually became blue. Either way, the only thing I can really chip in on this is that Superman has had more live action appearances than any other superheroes except maybe Batman. The "public consiousness" that singer wanted to tap into didn't account for the fact that none of the other iterations of Superman had a vinyl/rubber/mylar/weaved-and-moulded costume. George Reeves wore Blue Red and Yellow Tights, Christopher Reeve wore Blue Red and Yellow Tights, and Dean Cain wore Blue Red and Yellow tights. The main Supermen that the public outside of the comic book nerd world know about and care about.

So every single Superman costume in existence should only ever be off-the-rack spandex any coplay guy could put together? They should never do texture work on the fabric or use leather or vinyl or have raised emblems? By your logic, a good number of interpretations of the costume in the comics would instantly be invalidated. Oh, wait. Reeves wore suede boots and had a low-hanging cape! Reeve wore vinyl slipper socks! Cain wore dark red galashes and a rubber rectangle on his belt! Those don't fit the "public consciousness" either! I guess they're not valid for those reasons, eh? Not to mention this assertion is blatantly false. The "public consciousness" didn't care one whit about Routh's costume. It was only self-righteous fanboys with tunnel vision who had a beef with the costume. To a normal joe on the street, Routh was wearing a Superman costume, full stop. Honestly, if I wanted to hear egotistical, uninformed and downright wrong assertions that Superman can only look or be done a specific way, I'd go the John Byrne forums. Then again, so many fanboys follow his example....

You're damn determined to defend that suit. Setting aside whether it's a valid interpretation or whatever, what is your personal preference, what did you like about it?

DC Comics has released a first look at a page from writer John Arcudi and artist Lee Bermejo's Superman "Wednesday Comics" strip.
The brainchild of DC Comics Art Director Mark Chiarello, WEDNESDAY COMICS is a unique and groundbreaking storytelling method - 16 pages, printed on broadsheet-size newsprint, featuring weekly stories by the best and brightest creators out there.
"Wednesday Comics" is a new weekly title and format designed to evoke the Sunday comics section from newspapers. The 12-part series, which launches this (U.S.) summer, will be presented in a broadsheet format that unfolds from traditional comic-book size. Each issue will be 16 pages and contain 15 serialized stories.supermanhomepage.com/news.php?readmore=6275#commentsI like this design of the suit, especially the belt.. Also like Superman's body proportions and the dark red. Check the boots. Cool.
