well i finally got a vhs to dvd converter. after testing it out on a couple of home videos, i'm now in the process of recording the abc broadcast of STM complete with all commercials! i can't wait till it's done. i've always wanted a good recorder for all my home movies and 80's commercials. after a lot of research i got the el gato eye tv 250 plus. it does a lot of other stuff besides vhs to dvd, but that's the main reason i got it. if anyone is interested, here's a link. www.amazon.com/Elgato-10020780-Digital-Receiver-Converter/dp/B0013PQ6P4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1235708126&sr=8-2

keep us posted. i have some varying quality tv versions- but it would ....sweeeet to see the vintage commercials too.
i would be very keen to see the results of your experiment.

okay i transferred the whole thing last night. i recorded using the highest settings so the file is 3.8 gb. picture quality is good, but i just purchased a vcr head cleaner as i've never cleaned my vcr before. so im gonna do that than redo the tape and see if there's a quality difference. i want to make sure i can get the best quality out of all my tapes before im done. there's also a slight hiss in the audio. not really prominent but ill see what i can do to get rid of it once i redo the tape.

Does this have more scenes that were not seen in the theatrical or the Extended Cut?
Man I remember that abc Sunday Night Movie intro.. man that was a long time ago! I miss the old days of television.

Wow, that's great. I've never seen an extended cut of STM except the Donner/Thau cut obviously. I remember my old STM VHS copy I recorded off the BBC a good few years back, oh good memories. Sadly I don't have it anymore. There's something really great about VHS, it has that sort of I don't know, more fun and memorable moments for me than any other format I've owned. Maybe when DVD is phased out I will be saying the same thing about that, but I still don't consider DVD a great technology for movies. Bleh.

Wish I never taped over my copy of that. My parents recorded it when it originally aired and I watched it from cognizance 'til 13.

I love it. Movie broadcasts were treated like an event! I miss those days.

That is awesome, thanks for that. What a charge I would get as a kid when that opening would kick in.
