the destruction krypton is ESSENTIAL , but it's not about superman - it's about Jor-El.
as eluded to in the movie - and certainly shown in comics , there were ' other worlds " jor could have sent his son - he chose earth for 2 reasons :
1) the safety of his son
2) the legacy of civilisation properly preserved.
" they are primitives...thousands of years behind us.."
" he will need that advantage ...to survive "
Jor sends Kal to earth , and in so doing goes through tremendous , tenacious effort. he wants kal to be somewhere where his physiology will ( so far as Jor is aware ) protect him from harm. he is a hawkish father, sending him to a comparable planet would have left ka-el much more vulnerable to injury , and if arriving safely , would have made him just another orphan .
since kryptonians have god-like power on earth - why arent there a whole slew of kryptonians hanging around ? it MUST be exceedingly difficult and dangerous to travel the distance. it must be a desperate gamble of a desperate father.
" ...the phantom zone..an aternal LIVING....."
" ...as opposed to us perhaps....its suicide..no its worse- its genocide "
if Jor-El KNOWS krypton is doomed - why bother trying general zod ? why bother fighting the civil war on krypton ? its all gonna blow up right ? so - let zod take over for all the good it will do him . the distraction could allow Jor to escape....
wouldnt that be poetic- the despot Zod sits on his crystal throne the first day and then the tremors start ! ha! way to go ! you're toast!!
no, Jor is absolutely devoted to the trappings and traditions of krypton. he prevailed in the war against fascist Zod, he presided over a trial that he knew would eventually be meaningless. Jor finds comfort in his duties, his attention to sacred traditions. it comforts him as he secretly prepares to save his son. this is really deep psychological motivation here.
i am sure Jor would be LOATHE to go to earth - but he has a plan and he has a reason.
" the virtuous spirit has no need of thanks or approval- only the certain conviction that what is done...is right "
" ...always hold in your heart the pride of your special heritage "
why does Jor gets all god-the-father to kal-el's jesus motiff? why the years of lecturing inthe spaceship. why tell kal that he has a JOB to do ?
see- if kal went to daxam or thanagar or whatever , he'd grow up fairly unremarkable. but as the LAST kryptonian kal-el cannot simply be ordinary , he has to celebrate the legacy of a proud sophisticated and advanced culture. he cant just sit back and have a hedonistic life. with all those powers jor knew he had to prevent any despotic tendancies.
no- kal el has a mission - and that is to motivate humanity to evolve- to excell. to see that - even with tremendous power , corruption is not necessary , nor excusable and should be used to help. this way , humans can look to krypton/kryptonians as both an inspirational and cautionary example. so Jor- gives specific instructions- what to do , what not to do and even anticipates a little angst and rebellion here and there.
it's huge, epic and gorgeous. theres just layer after layer of biblical and mythological subtext .
" ...they only lack the light to show the way..."
