Awesome! Are you gonna put in all the deleted scenes? I think that since the Metro club stuff isn't there it would be easiest to just drop the NM1 stuff. Are you gonna attempt to finish the SFX for the new scenes?
Keep it up... SIV can be great jus' needs a little sprucing up; hey maybe your restoration efforts could persuade Mr. Thau to re-edit SIV.... CAN YOU IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES?

I'm not going to give away any big surprises as far as what scenes will be in the final cut and which ones will be rearranged. Take a look at some of my preview clips to get a feel for the movie.
After finishing up the edit, I don't feel any special effects improvements are necessary at all. They don't nearly live up to Superman I, but when all is said and done, I've made this film more about characters than special effects.

Can I just ask what the difference is with your cut and Jimbo's? What are you changing? What is the goal?

Jimbo's cut was (if I understand it right) to assemble the "complete cut" of the film screened in Orange County before all the edits were made. He did a fantastic job.
My cut is to make the best film possible by choosing from all the available footage, to show that Superman IV is really a good film and was not handled with care once 1) they found out about the budget cuts and 2) were forced to cut the film down from it's original running time.
I'm really excited about this cut. I think you'll be blown away. I hope, anyway. I also hope it will replace the official Superman IV film with this new "final cut".

The cut is finished. I'm watching it over now but I don't think I'll make any more adjustments. I've been working on this since Saturday, almost non-stop.
First I used Pinnacle Studio 11, made a complete cut and found out Pinnacle creates video that stutters every second. Unforgivable. Then I downloaded trials of many different editing programs and researched how to use them. My favorite is Sony Vegas. It also lets me render parts of the complete film so I can show those preview sections on YouTube and look at the quality before I make the file or burn it. The quality from the renders is unbelievable -- don't let YouTube fool you.
Right now I'm going to create the main file. I'm also going to look into DVD programs so I can make a nice menu as well, but that's not as important to me.
Let me know if you want Superman IV: Final Cut and I'll PM you ASAP!
Check out my previews on YouTube and let me know what you think.

I liked that you has a Jor-El bit before the Clark being sick scene. I see you have also cut the subway sequence out... beware that you dont cut out too much Superman like the Donner cut... maybe you'll use the NM1 stuff then.. but how do you get around the fact that there is no Metro Club stuff! IDEA!!! ---- Maybe your done already but if you cut out Lacy mentioning the Metro club by name so she just asks Clark to go on a random date then you could cut out the shot of Superman exiting the club to fight NM1. THAT WAY it looks like NM1 just showed up somewhere to cause chaos and Superman found him on his nightly patrol. A couple of parts I didn't notice any changes so I guess you are also making subtle edits.
Yeah if it's downloadable as a torrent or something I'd love to check it out!

I didn't say I cut the subway scene out. It might be somewhere else. Or, it may be cut. You'll have to see. The rest is a surprise. I want this disc to replace the Superman IV DVD in your official DVD case!

Yeah weird that the worst of the Superman movies got one of the best scores... can't wait to see your cut... but I'll be keeping my official SIV disc because on the reverse side is SIII I got the cheap 4 movie 2 disc set for like 10 bucks

Jimbo's cut was (if I understand it right) to assemble the "complete cut" of the film screened in Orange County before all the edits were made. He did a fantastic job. Thanks. My full intent was to reinsert all deleted footage as well as restore the complete musical score. I did that by both reinserting the deleted scenes, and in a few cases, inserting still frames and comic panes so that the music would fit. I refused to ever call it a Fan Cut for two reasons. One, I wanted to present it close to what it originally was and not apply any of my own ideas (with a couple exceptions), and two, I am in no way a fan of this garbage movie. I see some of my material there, hmmmm. My new "Clark's Nightmare" (the clip with Jor-El) you used much later in the film, I see. It's only edited as it is to fit the musical cue earlier in the film. You're probably much better off starting that over from scratch.

I love my version. "You Will Believe This Is A Good Movie!" Yeah, I like your Jor El scene, and wanted to find a place for it, so I used it later in the film as Superman is sick. I based my cut off of yours for completeness, and the official Superman IV DVD. If the original Superman IV (theatrical) is a 3 out of 10, I'd say this new cut of mine brings it up to at least 6/7 out of 10. Maybe I've just been working on this for way too long lol.

Trust me, when you're staring at this movie for hours on end, day after day, you'll begin to lose perspective of what a good movie is. Immediately pop in Citizen Kane or ET when you're done to ground yourself.

I think i'm going a bit crazy, I edited this final cut for 4 days straight, multiple times when it didn't work in Studio 11... and now I just watched your 117 minute cut again while I'm waiting for Vegas to render my DVD.
What program did you use for your cut? Did you do anything crazy to some of the tracks? When I tried to edit them in any program, I got garbled or no sound for some scenes... the end of the Nuclear Man/Statue of Liberty scene, Clark & Lacy say goodbye, and some others where you're pumping the score. I had to switch back between your cut and the theatrical to splice it all together like one big jigsaw puzzle.

I'm going to work on some special features eventually -- I think I'm going to keep working on Superman IV over the years, like George Lucas keeps tweaking his Star Wars movies.
One idea I had was a short special feature called "Michael Thau's Superman IV", where I edit the movie in his patented style. You know, like that video floating around of "Thau's" Superman: The Movie. Jumps, cuts, and that infamous musical cue.
Hey... it made me laugh at least.

I used Womble MPEG Video Wizard for the video/audio editing, and Audacity for a couple things. Audacity was used to try and eliminate as much of the temp score in the deleted scenes as possible. I wasn't as meticulous as I would have liked there.
Nothing crazy was done to the tracks. I ripped the audio using DVD Decrypter which gave me a nice .AC3 file. I then cut it up, pasted it around, and applied MP3s of the musical score.

Editing is tedious and a pain in the ass so I applaud anyone who attempts something like this with the amount off footage involved. good luck. i think there's a good movie in there with Superman IV. With the right editing and some touched up fx ala highlander II i think it could be greatly improved.

My edit of Superman IV is "complete." The final title is Superman IV: The Final Cut. I just watched it on DVD and I was ba-lown away (as Jeremy would say). I'd also say that it's at least two to three times the film the original "theatrical/poorly edited mess" is. Instead of refocusing the film due to budget constraints, the original editor chopped many quality scenes while leaving poor quality ones that showed the lack of budget and had nothing to do with the story anyway. Why? Did Sidney J. Furie agree to it? Who's decision was it? If Sidney was disappointed in the decision, why didn't he take his name off the movie? Why didn't Chris step in and stop it?
Anyway, this re imagining of Superman IV is set this up to be the definitive version of the film, finally bringing it full circle. No longer is it a cheap, incomprehensible mess, but it's a film filled with heart, questions, answers, superhero action and the cold war crisis. It's also a more polished and refined film. Christopher Reeve's original Superman IV story is finally told. The Final Cut tells a complete story from beginning to end, developing characters that you actually care about, and you immediately feel at home with your old friends once again.
How's that for a pitch?

I don't see how you could cut stuff out and magically make it a better movie. Furie and his editor attempted that, and only made a bad movie worse. For better or worse, the more footage that's restored, the more cohesive the movie feels.
But from a technical standpoint, how are the edits? Seamless? And just how much of your edit uses my version, and what places?
