My cut of Superman II is now complete.
Superman II: The Adventure Continues
1 hr. 44 minutes
Final Menus:
Changes made to the official Superman II and The Donner Cut:
1. Intro cut down from The Donner Cut: Trial, STM recap, credits = 9 minutes... only inserted a shorter clip of the trial because Alex from BizarroWorld requested it... it works both ways.. used Lester's footage of villains escaping due to better background plates
2. Daily Planet scene cuts when Lois shows Clark the paper so I could use a "completed" reveal scene
3. Moon Explorers scene from Lester's version/Thorne's score, cut after Zod says "finally to rule" (no fly away)
4. Fixed Luthor's hand when he says "you wanna take a trip"... in the Donner Cut, he starts saying it while holding his left hand up, then the next shot shows his right hand up... I fixed it by using a far away shot of the ballon
5. Niagara Falls overview and then Lois jumping in the water
6. Luthor approaching and in the fortress from the Donner Cut, cut at "too true to be good" to Villains arrival
7. Villains arrival edited - Zod no longer says "So this is planet houston, what a strange surface" cuts at guy in boats reaction
8. Next scene is Pink Bear, followed by flying to the fortress
9. Villains encounter the cops - Zod double deleted, cuts faster to the gunshot
10. Extended scenes of Superman and Lois in the fortress/Superman getting dinnner/something more comfortable
11. News report/military vs trio from Donner cut, cut Zod's "the whole planet houston" line
12. Losing Powers as seen in Donner Cut
13. Whitehouse Invasion as seen in Donner Cut
14. Diner as seen in Donner Cut
15. Luthor Pays a Call is now without the Lester filmed bridge of the villains being bored
16. Getting powers back as seen in Donner Cut minus the "father!" line which is seamlessly cut
17. Daily Planet scene when villains attack is pure Donner but at the earthquake sound seamlessly goes to Lester's music - hand holding Perry cut, Lester's Lois cut
18. "Would you care to step outside line" intact with Lester's triumphant music
19. Zod's lines cut before he throws concrete
20. After cabbie says "this is gonna be good" the battle is pure Donner with one small edit after Superman is kicked into Liberty, also removed the mirrored shot of Zod, and the mirrored "no entry" scene
21. Fortress finale plays the same except the switch to Lester's music once Superman crushes Zod's hand
22. Never Forget scene from Donner version minus destroying the Fortress
23. Balcony Goodbye scene from Donner cut leads into Diner Rematch and end credits. No flag return, no turning back time, no memory kiss.
24. Donner end credits with new Superman theme and Lois' theme
QUESTIONS and ANSWERS:
Q: Why did you include the "pink bear" scene and "Lois jumping in the water"?
A: Although I am a pro-Donner viewer, for this cut I wanted to use only "completed" scenes, meaning no workprint footage, no deleted scene footage. For this reason, I had to come up with a way to use Donner's opening and Lester's Niagara scenes. Blank Bullets is just a test shot and I did not want to use it for this "complete" version.
Q: Why didn't you use "turning back time" "memory kiss" or the "returning flag" at the end?
A: I didn't use turning back time because I wanted this to be the most complete version and one that could have reasonably followed STM. I didn't use "memory kiss" because although it technically works and looks good in the picture, after the discussion on Lois's balcony it just seems like overkill and I wanted to go with a more "pure Donner" solution. Plus, everything doesn't have to be 100% resolved in every film. It's cool that Lois knows his secret. I didn't use the returning the flag simply because the shot of Superman approaching the Whitehouse looks unfinished and takes the viewer out of the "completed film" mindset.
Q: Why doesn't Superman destroy the fortress?
A: He doesn't destroy the fortress because I had to cut the Arctic Patrol scene, and without that scene it might seem like Superman destroys the fortress with Luthor inside.
Q: What? You cut Arctic Patrol? I love that scene!
A: So do I. The only reason I did not use that scene is because even though it is in widescreen, it is not in "completed" or "mastered form." I may use it for another cut, but for this cut, I wanted to only use "completed" scenes.
