"It is a remarkable dichotomy. In many ways, Clark is the most human of us all. Then...he shoots fire from the skies, and it is difficult not to think of him as a god. And how fortunate we all are that it does not occur to him." ~Batman (Superman/Batman #3) Think about it- And share your thoughts here. Also, I want to use this thread to post this link: popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2009/03/indiana-jones-w.html?cid=151317133#comment-151317133EW.com is asking the following, Who's your favorite pop-culture hero? So, let's support Supes!

He's an alien. So other.
He considers himself more than likely a man above all. Well, it depends on which medium, too. Some versions of Superman, he considers himself an alien, some he considers himself a man, some both. Etc.

If I had to choose one it would have to be man. Look at your classic stories of gods. They don't empathize with humans the way Superman does.
Superman is also quite mortal. He's damn near invulnerable and he may well live for centuries but he can be killed and plenty of bad guys have kicked his ass. Doomsday, Parallax, Captain Marvel, etc. I forget who said it but there was a line about him being a "SUPERman but still a man non the less."
Captain Marvels got more for a case for being a god than Superman does and even he isn't.
Godlike? Sometimes. A god? Nope.

Metallo has good points. Superman is not a Zeus or some other mythical god who reigns from some mountain and looks down upon mortals. He's all MAN, baby.

Superman will never think he's a god. He can't. He mustn't. That's what makes him who he is.
The second he thinks of 'imself as a god, he'd start to behave as one. That wouldn't be good.

He's an illegal alien. When he got here he was raised by the Kents illegally. He never registered with the immigration and naturalization offices under Kal-El. He should be deported and live on Mars with J'onn J'onzz.
Sorry, I'm in a weird mood today. Supes is our watchful protector, he's not a God.

Nah, I'm sure he has a social security number. Daily Planet would have required that, I'm sure. Maybe the stress of all that paperwork is what killed Jonathan Kent.

He's an alien. He's only a man to us because that's how we perceive him, he could technically have both private parts. I mean how do we really know??!?!

The poll really depends on the definition of "man." Do we mean "man" as in mortal man or do we mean "man" as in a HUMAN male?
He's a male of his species but he's not a "man" in the typical human usage of the word nor is he an ordinary man. But he's quite mortal.
Does "other" mean somewhere in the middle? cause alien doesn't always equate god or even demigod. Mr Spocks not quite human or alien: he's both...but he's definitely not a god.
Q on the other hand is an alien but you could argue that he IS a god even though he's really a highly evolved lifeform.
The poll depends on the definition of "god" too for that matter.

the shape of our skull allows for development in the area of our brain that allows for greater cognitive , abstract thinking than other mammals. we are not gods- but we have a physiological edge over other animals. we CHOOSE to use this advantage in selfish or benign ways.
superman has a physiological advantage - a rather substantial one - and he CHOOSES to use it in a benign way.
but to answere your question , superman is based on mytho-biblical archetypes , most motably Jesus, who , ironically is also debatably a man-god/god-man .

Even in the loftiest Superman stories, it's always his humanity which sets him apart.
Take All Star Superman #10, where it's implied that Superman creates OUR Universe, and therefore, would be our Creator. Yet, in the same story, he stops a young girl from commiting suicide, and stays with her to tell her that "it's alright".
From a character standpoint, Gods tend to see themselves as Gods, or they're aspiring to godhood. I haven't read to many stories about "the reluctant god". With that in mind, since it is HUMANITY that Superman aspires to, despite his nearly limitless powers, he is a man.

Of course he's alien but I think they mean man in a mortal sense or basic gender.

Reeve said himself; if Superman had remained on Krypton, he'd have turned out as some schmuck on account of his being a bit dim and uncouth.

So here is the final list of the Top 20 Coolest Heroes in Pop Culture, with Superman coming in at No. 3.. www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20268279_17,00.html he should have been #1. And by reading the comments (on the first link), he was by far the favorite one. LOL, it seems that some people strongly disagree with Superman being so high on the list. Some even HATE him. ;D You can read about that in the section provided to post comments regarding Superman's position as the #3 most popular pop-culture hero.

This kind of discussion requires deep analogy, especially because the film has so many biblical analogies that could compliment the ideal that Supes is a god in his own right. On the other hand, he is of human fuction, same type of build as a human, same feelings, he eats, he sleeps, and all other things. The answer, I think, lies somewhere in between, personally. It's amore of a judgement call, I guess.

Jesus cursed a fig tree because he had the munchies and the tree didnt have any figs. Jesus loved wine, his first chronlogical miracle was the water-wine bit. the prophet elijah suggested the Baal was " in the privvy " doing his " business ".

IMO, Superman is a god who thinks he is human. Lex Luthor is a human who thinks he is a god.
