Me and herself watched STM Friday nite! Had some wine, nacho's and dip, sweets and chocolate! What a nite!! While watching STM I couldn't help but think about what if it was all done right! The proper Donner SII, a Donner SIII, a Justice League movie! I pictured Reeve infront of Batman, Green Lantern, Flash, Wonder Woman! Perhaps, with technology in like 20-30 years, people at home will easily be able to create a movie on their PC's and recreate characters!
Anyway, we're going to watch SII either tonight or tomorrow night! I explained about SII and the problems and how the theatrical hasn't aged near as good as the first! She remembers loving SIII as a kid but we're going to do all the movies over time!
So what should we watch? Theatrical or Donner? We will watch both but this is the first time watching it so I want her to have the best viewing experience and to me the Donner Cut doesn't cut it but the Lester Cut lacks the Donner elements that make STM special!

The Donner Cut, (please?) ...because the person watching it the first time, wouldn't need to complain, because they don't know about the Lester Cut ie: Paris. Then maybe, some time next year, when they forget about The Donner Cut; let them embrace the Lester Cut. Chances are; The Lester Cut is The Ultimate Version, so don't ruin the experience by showing the Lester Cut first. Otherwise, they might not like seeing the "Donner" Cut again.

I vote theatrical but its close. The only reason I say theatrical is because the ending makes a little more sense and the video/music editing is better. In a perfect world you should show them one of the great fancuts that takes the best of both worlds You mean like this?

Theatrical, then Donner Cut
That's the order in which I first saw them in 2006, and I'm able to appreciate the best parts of both.

Yeah I'm thinking theatrical also! Like i'd have to keep explaining it to her with the turning back the world again! I might make my own cut someday and make the best version for myself i.e. Lester cut with Brando, Lois knowing he's Superman and thats pretty much it! I'd be happy with that! Has anyone made a cut with those as that's what I'd prefer to show! It'll be next weekend when we watch it!

Show the Donner cut. I wanna get a reaction from someone who never saw Lester's theatrical cut!

Show the Donner cut. I wanna get a reaction from someone who never saw Lester's theatrical cut! I think thats a GREAT idea Adam! I really would be interrested in hearing a review from somenone who has seen STM, but has not seen any cut of Superman II, just to see what they think of the Donner Cut.

Tehe, this reminds of a user on IMDb who took someone who had never seen any of the Star Wars films and proceeded to show them to her in episode order, rather than production order.

Perhaps that could be something to test with the Indy trilogy and KOTCS too.

That would be the 'correct' thing to do - to someone who has not seen the films...
(I've never thought about The Indy Films though - I'm not sure why - but I can't see 'Temple Of Doom' as a prequel - maybe because Harrison is 'slightly' older or because he seems more relaxed).

Ok so we're gonna watch the SII-DC on Sunday nite! Can sit up as late as I want as i'm on Easter holidays! 2 weeks!! One of the many joys of teaching!! I'd love to do the Indy films as an excuse to watch them all again but she's probably seen Indy more times than I have if thats possible!! And she hated KOTCS and thought it was an insult to the films prior! We watched SW:ANH and she hated it also! She wanted to turn it away after 20 mins but I tried to reassure her it was epic but she could see it! Plus she keeps calling it Star Trek!! However, she does want to see the new Trek film!

Well we watched the Donner cut! She's never seen either of them so it was a good insight! She didn't really like it! She said the scenes were great but badly done! I didn't tell her about the music, the editing. I just said "there are 2 versions by two directors".
Her verdict: Very choppy. I never thought of it this way by she said why did he turn back the world as it made Supes look like he couldn't trust Lois with his secret. It would have made better sense to leave her knowing.
There was no flow to the story. The music didn't fit. Bad dubbing. The "I'm not a coward Zod" and "Lois what have you done". The fight scene was rubbish. Ursa had her hand around Supes neck then didn't. Superman wasn't seen for the first 40 mins and was only in it a little bit. Oh she hated the intro also. I showed her Selutrons after and she much prefers that! Pity WB wouldn't let him do it. The only reason people bought it was to see Brando. Only the fans. It wasn't done right. I bet, if he did do it, and it was well advertised even on TV, it'd be pretty big!
Going to do the theatrical cut next week or the week after. She wants to see SIII as she said she loved it as a kid but I think as an adult she'll hate it! Not sure about SIV! I might not bother even telling her there is a fourth.
There you have it. Someone who never knew any of the problems said the exact same problems as we all have with it!

She might be an average viewer, but it shows - she loves her movies!

Going to do the theatrical cut next week or the week after. Did you show it to her? It would be interesting to read what someone who saw TDC first thought of the TLC. She wants to see SIII as she said she loved it as a kid but I think as an adult she'll hate it! What was her verdict on III as an adult viewer? As for the main question, I voted for showing TDC first since it's closer to the mood and style of STM. I'm thinking of showing someone who's only seen STM and SR, this version of SII: TDC up until the final battle at the Fortress of Solitude, then show her Lex's arrest from the deleted scenes on the TDC DVD, then pop in TLC and start right where Superman drops Lois off at her apartment thru the amnesia kiss, bully fight at the diner and patriotic ending with the flag at the White House which makes for a good lead in into the events of SR which she has already seen.
