Today, while searching for manips/pictures, I came across this link sexualityinart.wordpress.com/2007/01/page/8/ and this comment seemed like an interesting topic to discuss here: "In Richard Donner’s recent DVD released Director’s Cut of Superman II, Lois Lane does not receive a “Super-Kiss” that forces her to forget their past. I’m not a big fan of the endings to either Superman I or II, because in the non-mythical world, we don’t get to forget, and we don’t get to turn back time. And the human and super-human struggle many people face is how to deal with past loves here on Earth, where we are not allowed to forget."I did not include the endings of S3 or S4 because honestly, I don't think the movies make enough sense to be taken seriously. But if you disagree, I included "Other" as an option. Thoughts?

Honestly? Can't believe I'm saying this but as far as ENDINGS go I think Superman III might have the most "believable" one that doesn't make me smack my head sometimes.
STM's ending is magical but part of me always though turning back the world was a copout...in ANY Donner Superman movie. Its got a lot of symbolism but still. And the Superkiss...again it just falls apart. emotional yes but it just falls apart.
Supeman IV is decent enough but we get ANOTHER superkiss before its over and it has a good message but it just seems kinda...meh. Anti climactic in some ways.
With III he beats Webster and rekindles things with Lana.
SR is kinda downer/reality check but at least it doesn't border on absurd like some others.

EASILY Superan Returns, for me.
I still get tears every time he gives the speech to his sleeeping son.

Adam, this is not a thread to attack others for their preferences. So, please, think before you post. And thanks for replying. Let's have a civil discussion, shall we?

I came pretty close to crying during that scene. Singer is better at his craft than you seem to realize.

It's not an attack! I just can't believe that anyone would cry over that scene! It's fine that Mav does though.... I totally get that it is the result HIS UNIQUE sensibilities and I will not press him to explain why he cries when he sees the scene! I'm not a crier in films but I could see myself crying in SR if the speech touched me in a personal way. Like what if I had a kid somewhere myself and he was being raised by another man and I could only see him on weekends? Qualifying that, I would maybe cry during the SR speech scene. More than that I do kinda feel bad that I constantly bash and trash a film that really means a lot to some folks. I mean I just though it was a average Superman movie... didn't know some were so attached. BUT THAT'S OKAY!! As they say fifferent strokes for different folks. I do not attack anyone's opinion of SR nor their reactions however extreme they seem to me to any scene in said film. Moreover I do not expect any justification for any opinions or reactions people have pertaining to this film.... it's all good. But seriously I'm curious why come to tears over the scene? NOT an attack and feel free to ignore.... I'm not pressin' and please do not ban me muh-lord-of-da-bored! You really want to get banned, don't you?

I picked "discovered fatherhood/let Lois go".
It's a very emotional scene. I too cried when I saw it for the first time. Haters say it's creepy, I say it's heartfelt.

I didn't cry during that scene but I do get teary-eyed. That is a very emotional and a very real scene between Superman and his son.
That one get's my vote.

Super Kiss! ...because it ties the part one and two perfectly, and because to me, it seems real. I love the way Reeve turns back to Kent mode! ..."Ummm Breathe Lois!" And to top it off, The Flag flying high is one of the most iconic images of the series! A shame they didn't use it in The Donner Cut!

Bellocke..... EXAAAAAAAAAACTLY You cry every time you see that scene Mav? No, I get a lil teary eyed. Innit though? Your belief of it isn't required. Besides that, I guess Myself, Keith, Legsy, MrM & Stargazer have shown you something new to believe in. Yes you do, its just that you cant anymore. You're learning. I don't ban. We all have a say in that. Btw Adam.............look at the poll results. Apparently, I'm not alone.

Hands down, the SR ending is the most realistic- the time-altering device (and without any overt consequences) and amnesia (whether it's a super-kiss or a blow to the head- a la "Spiderman 3" and "Nip/Tuck") are creatively the worst devices that can be used, and (justifiably) create audience resentment, to certain degrees.
Beyond that, my love for most of SR is no secret; it's painful how underrated it's been by the louder fans--- and moreso painful that Singer wanted to return, and (it looks like) won't for a sequel.
Anyhow- about the 'bedroom scene'--- actually, from the 'death' of Superman on, my heart was in my throat in just HOW good and artistic the scenes were--- up until Brandon gives his speech to the son. I get the idea, and the music and the facial expressions were powerful even without dialogue prior, but it's one of the few cases where the line delivery felt slightly 'off' to me from Brandon--- or his interpretation of how to say them didn't sync with how it felt it should have been said. I know there's a multitude of ways it could have been said- but from the first time to the tenth (or so) times I've seen the film, this is one of the few scenes that I don't cringe, but I never feel totally in agreement with how the performance was executed.
I'm glad it worked for others, but I would have loved to have seen alternate takes on the dvd of how this scene would have been played out.

I definitely understand that point of view. That's the scene I voted for because I do find it realistic and touching (how could you not if you've ever had a bond with a child or a parent), but there very well could be a better take out there. I got that with The Dark Knight. I thought that the trailer with the voice over of The Joker addressing the mob had a much better delivery than the take that wound up in the movie. For whatever reason, I've always been more into watching alternate scenes than deleted scenes.

^oh, come on, lighten up, legsy. There is nothing else to it. BTW, I also voted for the SR ending. I just LOVE, LOVE everything about it. And I so appreciate that it's realistic, serious, mature and respectful to the mythos. Yeah, Supes loses the girl (apparently) but his consolation prize for giving his life to save the world is what he was looking for all along, his son! BEAUTIFUL! On the other hand, my favorite beginning of the Superman movies is Jor-El's Farawell to baby Kal-El from STM. It's so sad and sweet and epic at the same time. Just what legends are made of. I so love these movies.

I'm voting for Superman II because the super-kiss is followed by the diner revenge scene and Superman returning to the White House and promising never to let the president down again.

I’m going with Superman: The Movie’s ending. Reeve’s delivery was excellent and I loved the final line, “Don't thank me, Warren. We're all part of the same team! Good night!” GREAT way to sum it up! Of course, SINGER had to copy it, among a million other things from Superman I, for his POS movie. Lester's Superman II is a close second. I got the same vibe as he returned the president's flag and stating, "I won't let you down again." Reeve was so great! No one else will ever be able to match his magnitude and you’re not going to have it by simply copying what Reeve, Donner and the all the rest achieved. SINGER & Routh , I’m talking to you!
