I grew up watching old reruns of "The Adventures of Superman" with George Reeves, and that formed a lot of my ideas of what Superman was supposed to look like in the flesh- as an older father figure of sorts, in his 40's-50's.
When the Donner films came out, I was amazed and thrilled to see a new version, with Superman in his mid to late 20's....
Question is: Would anyone accept a version of Superman NOW that looked like he was in his 40's here in film or tv, post-Reeve? (and not as a supporting character, but as lead)?

I would prefer the older Supes, actually.

Mid 30s, looking like an experienced *man* is best for me.
Cain, Welling, Routh, bless 'em, all look like boys
Got no probs if he's in his 40s, 50s may be pushing it a little
Its a shame, I suspect they make him so young now to appeal to the teen demographics.
Make a man of the man of steel.

Probably not. Especially if he looked like George Reeves.
The Kingdom Superman looks too old and unattractive to me sometimes. Too much like a grandpa.
I don't envision Superman like a father figure much. My ideal Superman is youthful looking, VERY handsome and around his 30s.

Sure! I don't need some young buck.
heck, Daniel Day Lewis could probably still do Superman in Kingdom Come!

I hear you-
The older 'established' version was what I imagined before the Donner movie came out- so I agree that Donner/Mankiewicz's version brought new life into the character and the story material that I didn't anticipate, by showing him a bit greener and just starting out.
Prior to that, (particularly in the comics) I don't think Supes' learning the ropes as story material was really utitilized that much.... they had Superman as Superboy initially, but even then, those stories were REALLY more fantasy based* and not really part of showing the evolution of the character. (Something which I think is only REALLY recently addressed with Geoff Johns molding the character's history in comics. The John Byrne version---ehhhh.... nice try, imo, but never really had as much weight as I'd hoped)

Would be great to have seen a well-built Superman movie series with the same actor- and have that actor age at the same time that the character should age in the story (more or less- like the Harry Potter movie series- which was smart to move QUICK before actors get too old). For example, a first Superman film maybe with that actor in his mid-twenties, then a fourth or fifth one in his early forties- and aging the fictional world he's in at the same time. (In a sense like the Trek films)
In that regard, I liked the idea of showing Superman from his beginnings to battles he would/might have to face after being at the same job ten years in- and how much he would change in how he handles things.... but a ten year movie series is prettty rare. Heck, WB can't even get ONE Superman sequel made right now! (I don't count the same folks as being there in the Reeve era)

I said in a previous post that I didn't envision Superman as a father figure, however, I liked him being a father in SR (and in some stories from the comics). It really worked for me. And I think that it had to do with it being a sequel to the first two Superman films. It was a continuation of that story and it was well done. It really made sense storywise. Fortunately, Superman still looked young and hansome. I just don't want the character to be portrayed as an old man with silver hair ALL the time. It seems... so depressing to me. And I don't think the mainstream wants to see that either. Besides, I understand that Superman ages MUCH slower than us human beings, so I doubt we will ever see him 'old' lookingwise in live action at least, especially not in a feature film that is supposed to be part of a franchise... unless they do a one shot film like Kingdom Come.

I think the max age I would accept Superman as in a movie would probably be 40. Ideal age to me is the 30's.

Would love to see an older Superman. Think it would be a great time for one, too, after the excitement of Stallone and Willis resurrecting their old heroes in such a fun way. If you were going 50ish, Kyle MacLachlan would be good. 40ish, maybe Matthew Fox.

Reeves, especially in the early seasonsof AOS, is the absolute perfect embodiment of Superman from the 30s-60s. The character has aged backwards through the years now, and I think his "official" age is generally about 29.
Routh didn't look too young for the part, he looked too young for THAT STORY. The idea that Superman had been around for awhile, and then been gone for 5 years didn't suit Routh's look. Had it been an STM type origin story, his look would be perfect.
The thing is, they're gonna cast a Superman actor with an eye towards making at least 3 movies, so they want somebody who can play the part in 10 years time. You won't necessarily get that if you case somebody in their mid 30s.

The younger actors have always lacked the authority Alyn and Reeves had, and even the authority Collyer, Dark, and Daly had. (Newbern's all right, but Daly has a richer, stronger sound.) And after hearing MacLachlan's Superman in New Frontier, I don't see how you could want to go back to a 20-something in the role when an older actor can bring so much more to the table.. Reeve is one of the younger actors, and he sounded as authorative as the character needs to, not to mention he sounded more authorative than Tim Daly's Superman, who always seemed to be clueless and not in control of any situation.

Reeves had signed on for more Supes TV shows at the age of 45! His booziness had bloated his features at the end which was a shame as in the first 2 seasons he looked fantasic. That's what I mean when I say he should be a man. Go compare him to Routh's boyish look. Maybe Routh should have been in STM and 2, left for 5 years and come back as Reeve instead

Why not?
We accept Bond as a guy in his late 30s to mid or late 40s.

Please, Alyn had NO authority in the role whatsoever. Age or no age. I like the dude just fine, but he's got nothing on the Three Rs.
I think half the resentment on the internet about "young pretty boy" actors playing characters we love is this deep seated feeling that if they're YOUNGER THAN YOU (and better looking than you) they don't deserve to play the character you pretended to be as a child. Because deep down, you think you're more qualified for the part.
I'm not using "you" for anybody specific, ladies and gents. (well, LADY and gents.) By "you" I refer to "the internet", so please keep your red shorts on.

You know what would be great, if Reeve had never had the accident and took on a current role of Superman, aged 57! I'd be first in line to see it! Playing the older hero would have been fantastic. Kind of like the way all the old stars have been brought back; Rocky, Rambo, John McClaine, Indiana Jones!

As a silver lining....
...by the time WB makes its mind up for another Superman film, Brandon Routh WILL be in his 40's-50's!

Good point- though, I'd have to say that Captain Kirk never looked 'cooler' than when he had white streaks in his hair in Star Trek VI- (and Shatner gave a better performance)....and the Reeve photo-manipulation with white streaks in his hair as Supes looks VERY dynamic.....so, I wouldn't discount the white streaks yet... Another question might be: Would you accept an overweight Superman? ("Do you...eat?" "When I'm hungry." "Of course you can eat!")

Well...yeah, it'd be great for MANY reasons if he never had that accident, aside from being able to act again. Kidding aside, if the Superman movie series had maintained its quality from the first one- and had continually had been successful, I agree- it would have been interesting to see what the creative team would have done with an older REEVE Superman, if WB was willing to support a movie where the lead actually was over 50. (Aside- Kudos for Paramount for supporting Indiana Jones as a 70 year old). Would he have been ok if Reeve gained a few extra pounds as an older Superman, though?

Who wants a 'monk' Superman? Ew And yes, as a female, Shatner looked very attractive in the earlier Trek movies (TMP, WOK, SFS), but not so much in the latter ones, though. But I still loved seeing him...... he WAS CAPTAIN KIRK from TOS! Know what I mean? We grew up watching him in the role. But Superman is a different character, though. Like I said, he is supposed to age at a completely rate than us humans. He can look young for much longer than us. And he is supposed to be handsome like a Greek god. He is the arquetypal superhero.

Yeah I think that we could use a Superman who is actually in his 30's... even early 40's would do. I'm tired of seeing Superboy!
