As a silver lining.... ...by the time WB makes its mind up for another Superman film, Brandon Routh WILL be in his 40's-50's! DAHAHAHAHA !!!! ;D Yeah I think that we could use a Superman who is actually in his 30's... even early 40's would do. I'm tired of seeing Superboy! i would take it. i LIKE the idea of depicting superman as the older-wiser hero , the one who bats clean-up. the guy who comes in and shows how its DONE! the one who makes other superheroes look like amatures. the guy who makes it look easy , like he already knew what to do before he got there. the PRO . once we accept that NO version of superman is " definitive " in the sense that we have to be married to it forever , it is about time to get past the timid , uncertain finding-his-feet superman . ( i'm thinking obi-wan in ep3 is age/experience appropriate ) i am ALL ABOUT routh doing 3 more films , but before i ever heard of him i had imagined thomas gibson as a reev es-esque clark kent .

For an older Superman, Jim Caviezel.

As Metallo's old signature showed, 40-50ish Cary Grant would have made a good older Superman. He had a really good face for it.

There were rumors that Donner might have used Mel Gibson as an older Superman back when Donner mentioned he pitched Superman returning (though he didn't say from where he was returning) to a more present time and what he had to deal with in the more (then) current times.
Even when Gibson was younger (and I'm guessing he was about either in his late 30's or early 40's then- the time frame I think Donner was to have approached Warners), it's hard for me to envision Gibson as a follow-up actor to Reeve as Superman.
If the rumor was right, and Donner really did have Gibson in mind- can anyone else see that as something workable? (And this was after Lethal Weapon 1 and 2, I believe).

Nah. Just can't. He's got that wild charm in his eyes, he ALWAYS does, in every movie he does, Superman doesn't have that.
I LOVE Gibson, but nah. Criminy, though, tell you what, a young Mel Gibson could've been a pretty decent GL or Flash. heck, he always RUNS his ass off in every movie. No wait, that's Tom Cruise. Dammit.
Ideally, he would've been a pretty bad ass Wolverine in an XMen movie made in the 80's. Give him those Patriot mutton chops and that psycho scream of his (actually, the fighting scenes in Patriot pretty much scream "Hey, I could've done Wolverine in my sleep!")

There's no way Gibson could have pulled off Supes. He's only 5'9". There's no way Donner would have done that to Supes. I know their great friends, but I just can't imagine Gibson as Supes. Besides, Superman is Jewish and we all know how Mel feels about 'em.

LOL, legsy.
Yeah, Mel as Superman? HAHAHAHA. NO. Horrible idea.
But I agree that he could have made a fantastic Wolverine. Mel is a very intense actor; he would have been perfect, maybe even better than Jackman.

True, but Jackman owns as Wolverine. Sure he's a lot taller than his comic book counterpart, but he's the best actor for that specific character.

He could pull it off as a contemporary Supes today, no problem. He's the same age Reeves was when he first got the gig.
Plus he's an amazing actor.

Yeah, wow you're right.
Funny to think that, huh? A man in his 40's being cast as Superman.
Although, we did almost get Nic Cage as Superman when he was, what, 34? But looked a LOT older than that?

Funny you should mention him, he was in San Jose recently, appearing for free at a local church for an interview of his work on "Passion of the Christ"- apparently his work on the movie converted his life for real & he gave up a lot of opportunities and became a man of faith, who will only do certain roles, now. Seemed like a very authentic guy.
Would have been interesting to have seen his reaction if he was offered the script to "Superman Returns", with all its Christian metaphors....

I find it interesting that Dougray Scott -who was originally cast- was 5'11, James Marsden is 5' 10, Famke Jensen is 5'11- and Hugh Jackman is 6'2".
I wonder if the height difference is why Jackman was second pick... I agree that it's a pity that the only officially 'short' superhero in comics couldn't go to a short actor, but Jackman does more than make up for it.
Glad that the original rumors of Russell Crowe being offered the role didn't come through. Russell can do anger (apparently in real life with hotel clerks and telephones as well) as well as Gibson (heheh), but to me Jackman's face and voice looked so dead-on from the comics, it's hard for me to picture any of the other alternatives to be as good a choice for Wolverine as Hugh.

Eh, I never understood the hype for Caviezel as Supes. He doesn't say Superman to me at all. And I don't find him attractive enough for the character..... heck, I think he is kinda ugly actually. His nose is weird looking. I think I like Jor-L's choice better.

;D I always wonder if Singer sat in the audience of "the Passion of the Christ" and thought during some sequences... "Hm.... that scene could work in Superman Returns, too... " and.. "Hm.... that actor could work in Superman Returns, too..."

His nose is weird looking. I think I like Jor-L's choice better. He was very vocal about playing Supes after the Christ movie was released. It was around the same time McG was attached to the project.

I would for sure pick Caviezel for Superman in a "Dark Knight Returns" movie, in Reeve's stead of course.

After listening to him at the local church, I'd be curious what he said- do you have any more specifics on what he said?

Jim really doesn't scream Superman to me. Still seems like the bum from the Haley Joel Osment movie.

I liked Brandon Routh, but I did think he looked more like SuperBOY than SuperMAN. But in his defense, it's probably because I'm older now.
However, when I look at Chris Reeve, I don't see a boy, I see a man. I guess it's all attitude.
