I agree.... either as Reeve's or Routh's dad, he would have been outstanding. Brando gave it weight,(pun intended) and he's fine- but I never had the reverence others had for him as a screen legend. His reputation got the investors onboard, even though he was just doing it PURELY for the money (though according to the documentary, he fell in love with it afterwards).
Would Peck have gotten on board? If Peck had gotten on perfectly with Donner....MAYBE.... but even then, Peck is another screen legend that also (in the Omen commentary) was protective of his image, and was incredibly angry with Donner when he shot Peck in a way that showed his double-chin. To be in a 'superhero movie' probably would have been far beneath him (and I don't think he needed the money as bad as Brando)--- pity, though. I know Brando is/was key to STM getting made, and he's great, but now and then..... when I see panels from the Simon/Shuster original Superman comic books with Jor-el, to me, they SCREAM 'Gregory Peck'.

It's a shame Paul Newman turned down the part of Jor-El. He would have been perfect.

Here's what bothered me about Superman the movies (not necessarily hated tho).
- I like Gene Hackman's Lex, but I don't like how his only help is his girlfriend and a moron and that most of his scenes are comedic interactions with them.
- Miss Tessmacher's treated like a good person in with the wrong crowd, but she doesn't seem too bothered that millions of people are going to die. I don't get what we're supposed to think of her. Kitty Kowolski is basically a knockoff of her, but she's much more realistic. She's more consistently portrayed as good hearted, and in the end she betrays Lex not just because it suits her interests, but because it was the right thing to do.
- I like the turning back time scene for the dramatic effect, but it doesn't make a lot of sense. But when you think about it, does time travel ever make sense?
I mean.. say it was more like traditional time travel. Think of it like Back to the Future. What if Doc didn't demonstrate the time machine to Marty at the mall, to avoid getting shot? Marty would have never gone back to 1955, which would create a paradox. It's the same thing here. If Superman travelled back in time to the moments before Lois was killed and saved her, then his past self would arrive at Lois's side, with no reason to time travel and save her, which would create a paradox. Going back in time to save someone's life just doesn't work, period.

Ugh, I *hated* Kitty.
Gimme Miss Teschmacher any day. Valerie Perrine is a lot sexier. She also had more screen presence and charisma in one boob than all of Kitty put together.

They are very different. I miss the old Connery & Brosnan Bonds- The Craig Bond is enjoyable, but is very grim and serious--- it doesn't feel like the light (and admittedly brainless) fun Bonds that didn't take themselves too seriously. It's closer to the Bourne Identity series in tone. (Possibly it's closer to the Bond books, but I've never read them) Funny that you mention Gregory Peck as Superman. When I saw "the Omen", I always wondered: "Peck would make an excellent Jor-el. Why didn't Donner hire Peck, he would have been even better than Brando?" (*this was before realizing that the Salkinds locked Brando in before hiring Donner) Then....after listening to the newer Donner commentary for "The Omen", I realized that even if Donner had a choice of casting Peck, Peck apparently was really difficult to work with on "The Omen" (though, to be fair, Peck's son had just committed suicide prior to the filming- so who knows how Peck is normally) and punched Donner out on one occassion. ;o I'm sure GP would have been a fantastic Jor-El. Though, Brando did well too. However, GP's voice was perfect for the role! Just look at him... what a man. They don't make them like that anymore.. well, there are some exceptions. BTW, I had the pleasure to have met him over 10 years ago here in Santa Barbara, Califonia, where his son Anthony lived with his wife the then supermodel Cheryl Tiegs (divorced now, lol). A friend of mine worked for them, so one day they had a party and needed extra help, and my friend asked me if I could do it and I did. That bottom picture looks a lot like Brandon Routh.

-gregory peck would have been excellent as Jor-L , and had it been filme in '66 instead of '76 he would have been an amazing superman.
- " kitty " is ok , but miss tesmaucher..... mmmmm.....yeah- i will go with miss tesmaucher .
- stargazer met gregory peck ? epic win 'gazer!
- what i hate MOST about STM is that we cant have a fully restored 3-hour cut , or at least the full collection of deleted/extended scenes

Nah, Routh doesn't touch Reeve's look or screen presence or performance. I liked Routh and all, but he didn't do to Superman what Daniel Craig did with Bond. I completely disagree. I like Routh almost as much as Reeve. I like his Superman much better than Craig's Bond. EDIT: Just found this today (by accident- again, lol). ;D Nice to see (at least for ME) that others also liked Brandon's Superman better than Craig's Bond. I STILL haven't seen his Bond movies so I CAN'T tell for sure. ;D goldderby.latimes.com/awards_goldderby/2006/11/superman_vs_jam.htmlOh, how fast things change in Hollywood...

HAHAHA Brandon Routh for best actor of 2006?
C'mon.
Seriously? Even as someone who LOVED SR and LOVED Routh in it, it would just be absolutely ridiculous if that were to happen.

I also loved Routh in it, even though a couple of moments could have been stronger.
The Oscar talk, though, reminds me of this antedote: I did like how, Roger Ebert on "At the Movies", thought that Reeve was seriously robbed of an Oscar nomination for "Superman 2", because of the Academy's general snobbiness towards fantasy (and more particularly comic book) films and listed him on a special show at the time of those who the critics thought got snubbed that year by Oscar.
((God bless Hugh Jackman for his dig towards the Oscars this year- and his own acknowledgement that if it weren't for playing a comic book character, he wouldn't have the fame he has now--- or at least so soon.))

Oh my dear lord, stargazer. Let me get this straight. You haven't seen Craig as Bond, yet you think Routh did better than Craig? Am I understanding you correctly? I think it's great that you're a Routh fan and, but COME ON.

Yeah, yeah, I know, Enrique. ;D But I really don't feel like watching Craig's new Bond movies, at least I'm not in a hurry. I'll let you know when I do.

what a controversial thread. Apologies of someone already mentioned this - I hated the flipped image of Supes approaching the wing on airforce one. even in subsequent dvd releases this was never corrected. Yeah that bugged me too. How do they make mistakes like that? They had Superman holding the wrong wing, so they flipped the footage to fix it? It gets better. Remember how Might Mouse essentially had the Supes costume minus the chest S? If you have STM 2001 DVD (not the 06 repackaged disc) go to scene selection in the menu, Air Force One (I think its #23). Take a look at the still….!

Yeah, Gazer, don't go saying stuff like that. Kinda lessens your opinion when you go making a statement like that. See the Craig Bond flicks. Seriously. Don't be one of "them."
If you haven't seen him as Bond, you really should edit your message.
Basically, it's like saying, "If I had to tell you which is better between fried chicken or grilled chicken, I'd tell you grilled chicken. I've never ever eaten fried chicken, but I DEFINITELY like grilled more than it."

Back to the topic...is it entirely possible that I don't hate ANYTHING about STM?
Like, at all?
I may not love parts of it, but I definitely don't hate anything in it. Or even really dislike.

I may not love parts of it, but I definitely don't hate anything in it. Or even really dislike. Even Legoland? STM is a movie that's so good that the flaws are outweighed by the greatness. It's still a winner for me despite having (IMO) an awful ending. I can't say that about many movies.

Please can anyone try to do this? ...... Mr. Selutron?
