What makes Superman great for you? Is it his powers? His smile or his personality? Is it his stories? His weaknesses? Or is it something else, or all of the above? Ok, I saw this thread somewhere else and thought it would be a great topic here for us to discuss.

What makes Superman great for you? Richard Donner, Stuart Baird and John Williams. Oh ... and Christopher Reeve too.

My answer is pretty much the same, but I put it in this order…
John Williams
Christopher Reeve
Richard Donner
Stuart Baird
Geoffrey Unsworth
The Costume, the flying ie powers, the secret identity – All of the above 100%

To me, growing up, his image in the comics (a reprint of the Simon/Shuster pages) was simple and just immediately made in imprint on my mind as a child. That he was an immigrant who wanted to help others (though at the core born to another culture) and nurture society and fit in, clicked with me, as one of my parents also immigrated to the U.S..
With the Donner/Singer films, the parts of Superman as the "Jesus of Superheroes" was highlighted, and that idea of elevating the Superman story to a spiritual and mythical level really helped cement that fondness for the character. Being someone who helps society by example and virtue may not be 'dark/cool', but popularity isn't as important as being as the characters' father states "the light to show the way". That's what makes him great.
((Aside: An ideal Batman/Superman film, to me, btw, wouldn't even have to be about any heroics per se, but their philosophical differences in how to help society. Of course it'd need to have action, but part of me might not even mind if the two had a sitdown debate- As Batman more/less is about punishing and instilling fear to keep society in line- and Superman is more about instilling hope in people and forgiveness and compassion when possible. Batman would probably have broken Gus Gorman's arms and legs, while it's (somewhat) plausible that Superman would let him go with a slap on the wrist and a handshake.))
When Superman is simplified to only being a representative of the U.S.- yes, that's part of the character...but not necessarily what makes him great. Otherwise, he's just Captain America, but with the ability to destroy anyone by looking at them...What makes Superman's character great, to me- and also what sets his origin apart is that he was born to a different race, a different world, but is there to help all of humanity.

His sweat stains. Nah, really, he's Superman. I think the reason why I love the character so much is because he always does what's right. He's not vengeful, he's not after himself. He looks after everyone because he wants to, not because his parents were killed in a random act of violence.

Superman is great because he has shiny jet-black hair and a brilliant red cape and a bright yellow belt. He looks majestic soaring through the Manhattan skyline all lit up at night.
He is Superman... truth justice and the American Way!

Oh, YES! Me too. I LOVE it when Superman is compared with Jesus. They do have a lot in common, imo. Being someone who helps society by example and virtue may not be 'dark/cool', but popularity isn't as important as being as the characters' father states "the light to show the way". That's what makes him great.Very well put. Love your posts, CAM. I feel the same way. A S/B movie done this way would ROCK! Especially with Brandon and Bale. This image is from Superman/Barman #51--- it says so much about who they are,
