It is drumroll................................................
I like Ken Thornes' SII theme more than Williams STM..
I dunno why it just sounds better to me.... plus I LOVE the music in the SII credits when you see the fortress being made... awesome.
Williams score....eh... doesn't do it for me as much as Thorne!
Hey maybe Thorne will do SR2... I don't care if he uses his high school marching band again... hey... good is good!

Well, I'm with you there. Thorne's score sounds more refreshing than the original. It's much more lively.

I don't think his music beats John Williams' in STM in terms of the epic factor. However, for SII Thorne's composing works much better for the movie than any of Williams' for SII. I think the repeating cues that Thau used really hurt it though!

Am I the only one who hated the way the score sounded in Superman II for the most part? Especially at the beginning. It sounded so cheap and amateurish. Sorry.
Williams all the way.

Yeah stargazer you are right about this Williams STM music is superior to Thornes SII music. BUT I happen to like Thornes' score better because I grew up with it.
But yeah no mistake about it, objectively speaking Williams STM score is superior of course. I am just wired in a particular way to like Thornes' SII music better... go figure!

I'd imagine Thorne's score would've sounded grander had he been able to use an orchestra of the same size that Williams used for the first film.

williams went for the anthemic , epic-scope magnum opus score and it works perfectly for STM ( a movie we now know that jimbo secretly loathes , and he will be ..... punished for his transgression ) .
ken thorne was very skilled at adapting the score for a lighter , more whimsical approach that suited lesters sensibilty, so its a lightning strikes twice example of director-composer for STM and SII . had donner stayed to finish SII , the look and tone would have been different and williams would have come back ( quite happily ) to add to and amend the score .
by SIII thorne was adding more of his own than using williams , and again , it suited lester's tone- but the " otis / bumbling oaf " theme got overused .

Adam15--- are you using the RDC as reference for prefering Thorne over Williams? If that's so, I would agree about using Thorne's score for SII over Williams' replacement score by Thau....but... I have to agree with Jor-L1550:
If Donner continued, and Williams stayed--- Even though Thorne in retrospect did a great job in adapting Williams' music--- I imagine we would have had differences in the score, much like Williams' work in "Star Wars: A New Hope" and "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back"-
Again, Thorne did a great job....but....one can't help but wonder what Williams might have done, too....*sigh*

If I could only listen to one album for the rest of my life, it'd be STM.

I generally prefer Williams to Thorne, BUT......the music in the Diner/White House/Fly-by scenes in S2 is probably my favorite stretch of music in the series, next to STM's helicopter rescue. I love the little string hits as Rocky is lying in the pinball machine, I love the buildup to the main theme as the dumbfounded patrons stare at Clark, and I love how the finale music flows naturally into the end credits. Even after seeing (and feeling disappointed by) S3 so many times, I still feel pumped for a sequel everytime I see Coming Soon: Superman III on the screen.

I’m still waiting on Gandy’s review! In some way’s I also prefer Thorne’s work – my favorite cue of his is Gus Flying With Superman from part III – I’m so glad that ‘The Personal Theme’ got used more often by Thorne than Williams. Let’s not forget guys that if it wasn’t for John Williams – we wouldn’t be even debating the topic. ;D I’m curious sometimes what would Jerry Goldsmith’s score to STM sounded like? I think it might have had that Star Trek quality to it… since it was five years down the track when he scored Supergirl. Please Gandy - Where exactly are you up to with your reviews? In reality though, when you play them side by side, Williams does win, but I think it’s because we’ve heard part one an awful lot compared to the others, and speaking of which, my favorite is… drum roll…. Alexander Courage’s score to Superman IV.

Supes II sounds nothing like a marching band on album; I might even go so far as to say it's better sound-and-mixing wise than STM. Both Thorne's scores are fun, Superman III in particular, but you'd never know it by just watching the movie. I sure didn't!

I agree with MrM there. 'gazer, you need to check out the new soundtracks. It's literally night and day to what you hear in the movies.
Returning the flag/End titles for Superman II is my favorite Superman musical cue.

I still also think John Ottman did a superb job with the soundtrack to SR. I would probably rank his above Thorne's and just under Williams.

So, MrM, jim, what exactly is the FSM/Blue Box release? Where can I find it? Is it too expensive, worth buying?

www.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm?ID=8874[advertisement mode] 8-CD set with a thick and informative book, practically every piece of Superman music (from STM to the '88 series) you could possibly want in crystal clear quality (unless you wanted the instrumentals of the S3 pop music, in which case you're SOOL! ;D) [/advertisement mode] It's about $130, but personally, I thought it was worthwhile.

VERY cool! Thanks, MrM! You know, I also have a confession to make: I don't own any of the scores for these movies. And I LOVE this stuff! I only own the SR score dvd. I was looking for the STM score a few months ago but couldn't find it anywhere in town. So thanks SO much for the link. I noticed that they have the film version of 'can you read my mind'... I like it. I assume it is exactly as in the movie, right? Nice. As long as Margo is not singing it. ;D

For me John Williams is probably the greated movie composer that's ever lived. His work on STM really is awesome - afterall he came up with the unforgettable theme. John Ottman's music is also great. He rejuvinated Superman's music to more modern tastes. That in itself is very awesome stuff. I also believe he will go on to do many more great things. Thorne's music is great with what he had to work with. I think he did a great job considering his restraints and I feel he served SII well.

I think he did a great job considering his restraints and I feel he served SII well. Agreed on Williams. The guy is (or used to be) a MASTER composer, no doubt, but I never cared for what Thorne did to the score in SII. I don't get the praise. Besides, what exactly did he do with the score? He didn't compose any original music for the movie, did he? Maybe I'm missing something; haven't seen the movie in 2 years or so, but he just played with William's score and used the same music motifs in different parts of the film, no? And it definitely sounds amateurish to me, and nowhere near as good as William's. Also, there is no doubt in my mind that Ottman's score for SR is just leagues superior to what Thorne did in Supes II. But that's me. But we all are different and have very different tastes sometimes. Fact. If people liked what Thorne did, well, it's their right. I just wished he had done much better.
