The book makes a strong case for Thorne's efforts, but I'll not spoil anything now. Nice thing about the set, there's about a billion ways to customize the music if you're bored enough (or if, like me, your listening device is space-limited and you want to get creative).

I think what John Ottman with SR was more impressive than what Thorne did with SII. Not sure if I mentioned this lol.

Mainly because of the in-depth interviews with Mike Matessino (the FSM's producer), did I really get a chance to appreciate the work that Thorne did with Williams' score. Williams still would have been a first choice to do SII, though.
I agree that I REALLY enjoy the Ottman score over SII- but I wonder what differences there were (or restrictions, if any) for Thorne vs. Ottman. In reading interviews with Thorne and Matessino, it sounds like Thorne had more limitations that Ottman had. I know it was a smaller orchestra size, but were there also more time restrictions and an instruction not to vary it too much from STM? I've toyed with the idea myself of using Ottman's score for bits of my own SII fancut, but maybe it's overfamiliarity with the music that always screams out SR, rather than SII.
(( An aside: I also thought outside this board, Ottman's work was really underrated--- I thought it (if it qualified by integrating Williams' themes) deserved an Oscar nod that year. I think it was Matessino who hinted that if Williams were given the assignment to reboot the score today, that with what's available now, it would probably sound similiar to what Ottman delivered.))

Agreed.
At least TDK score wasn't nominated for an Oscar this year....
Oh, but it won a Grammy, right? ...

Did the Ottman score win a Grammy? I don't know- never followed them... would be nice if it got acknowledged, though...
On another note, if you love the score, definitely check out conventions where you might get the FULL score of SR.... Oddly (I have no clue why WB or other studios don't make it available), conventions and word-of-mouth places seem to be the only ways to get full motion picture scores of anything. (* I paid $40 for a incredibly lame "Special Edition" Dark Knight soundtrack from WB--- which only had remixes, rather than more music from the film. Stupid stupid stupid WB.... they don't realize people are willing to sheck out cash for a quality product. They should realize that the best way to avoid bootlegs is to put out a proper version themselves. Given a choice between a high quality official product and a crappy bootleg, people would be willing to buy the real thing, most of the time....)

Can I just say, I recently aquired a copy of SII theatrical in HD, and it seems the bitrate is higher for the dolby 5.1 track than that of the one found in the DVD. Now, upon inspection of the audio, things are noticeably clearer, however I'm not sure for the right reasons. It seems to make obvious the limitations of Thorne's score. However, this could just be not a very good source, since the on CD it sounds better. Still, if this is what they put in blu-ray, prepare to cringe.

When it hits Blu-ray, I expect it to look just as it does on DVD, only HD (same source material) with 640kbps audio instead of 320kbps (same source material).

Yeah it was 640kbps audio Jimbo. It was noticeably clearer than the audio on the dvd, but you could hear all the limitations with the orchestra and various sound effects. I know they converted it to 5.1 for the DVD and this, but they really need to give it a clean up like STM because it does sound very, very dated.

John Williams work on STM really is awesome, he composed an unforgettable theme.
Thorne's opening theme is my favorite, the Horns are really loud and its a strong theme.
