Interesting, I suspect this was recorded just prior to the release. He sounded pretty deflated and overall quite unimpressive.
I suppose when you work on something for up to a year it can become fairly tiresome, all the more reason to have someone passionate at the helm when taking on something with so much potential.

In retrospect, I just wonder if the combination of Donner wanting to cut down so much of the film; the either extremely low budget of the fx team (or incompetence or laziness...sorry, I have no pity for something I would have volunteered many hours for, for free); Thau's insistence on trimming trimming trimming (see his desire to cut down the 2006 STM film); and what now seems to be possibly too short of a deadline (Mike Matessino said that, had he been forced to meet the same deadline on the FSM soundtracks as the dvds, it would have suffered greatly.... and that's just audio)- all made the RDC doomed to looking like a hack edit job?
I remember a time when James Cameron offered to give back his entire salary on "The Titanic" just so that the studio could have enough money to do it properly, since the project was worth more than the money to him. It's hard to point fingers, but it's a pity that no one who had the $ and passion for the RDC wasn't willing to pony up the money to either boost the staff working on it or push for another cut. Seems like it's always up to the fans (with usually no money) to make things happen....*Sigh*

A recent interview with Mr Thau I just found:
Quite revelatory, and reveals the reasoning behind some of his choices in The Donner Cut of Superman II.
