Apologies. In re-reading your original post, you're right- I took your post to mean more than it did against SR. I admit that I am guilty of going overboard now and then in defending SR.... I did make wrong assumptions on what you said. I could call it a build-up of frustration over MOS probably not happening due to (possibly) SR negative reaction. Still--- You're in the right. I over-reacted and assumed you meant more than you did. Apologies again.

This is what Donner said on SR back in 2006, "Christopher Reeve established something that is and will always be unique, but there is a new young man out there who's a bit of a genius. He's done a beautiful job." "Routh is wonderful," says the veteran film-maker, who recently directed 16 Blocks. "He's brought his own identity to the role, and he is Superman." "There are times when there is an uncanny similarity to Chris. And there are times, believe it or not, I swear that he sounds like him." "Bryan is a good director. The special effects are not overused. He does what needs to be done, but doesn't make it something that's overly produced." "He's used (CGI) wisely and conservatively, and concentrated on the relationship between Clark Kent and Lois Lane, which I thought was amazing." "We made the original Superman with all the elements that were available in motion picture making at the time," he says, "and I think we did a heck of a good job with it." "But what Bryan Singer has done with what is available to him now is a miracle to me." "The picture's good. It was a two and a half hour movie, but I could have easily taken another hour and a half. I think they'll go onto make a series of wonderful films." news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/5164424.stmHe also talked a little bit about it last year, "I do think you could probably take Superman into some other areas today. I think maybe it's ready to break the mold slightly and bring a little greater sense of reality into it. Not contemporizing it to like today. Just making the heavies -- and the situation that is the tension piece -- a little more broken away from the comic-book character. It would take some tricky writing, some good acting and some good directing." Bryan Singer's 2006 film, "Superman Returns," felt like a valentine to the Donner work on Superman and the older director received it with fondness. "I totally enjoyed it. I saw it just that once. I went to the theater not knowing anything. Bryan and I had spoken many times before but I didn't want to know anything about the film. I went as the audience. And I thought, 'Wow, he really nailed it.' There's that one scene, when that piano slid across the floor on the boat? I was startled. It was great." latimesblogs.latimes.com/herocomplex/2008/10/richard-donner.html Also, back in 2006, I read somewhere (I think it was at Superman Thru the Ages) a quote by Donner that went like this: "By God, only Bryan Singer should make Superman films." I'm sure there must be more articles on the subject but these are the ones I remember right now. And honestly, it sounds to me like Donner really liked the movie. And that's easy for me to believe. GAZER FTW!

Hooray for baseless assumptions about what Donner thinks, to support your own opinions! It's not a baseless assumption. I going on the fact that Donner has many times criticized the abuse of CGI in films. That and his appreciation for good writing in which SR is quite poor IMO. Sorry but if I'm guilty of assuming Donner's opinions to champion my own beliefs then you're guilty of entirely the same thing.

Going on a man's word is not an assumption. Donner says he likes it. Saying SR suffers from bad writing is an opinion. Thinking Donner has the same opinion even though he has stated otherwise is an assumption.

Thinking Donner has the same opinion even though he has stated otherwise is an assumption. Exaaaaaaaaaaaaactly.See, the difference here is obvious. You guys are going on one thing to make your point: Donner dislikes the overuse of CGI.Well, who the heck doesn't? I hate bad CGI as well. There are a couple of awful CGI shots in Superman Returns that make me cringe, but I still adore the movie. Myself & plenty others are going on the things that Gazer posted, which is a much stronger argument for him liking the film, than bad CGI is for him disliking the film. Lets compare: I dislike the overuse of CGIVSChristopher Reeve established something that is and will always be unique, but there is a new young man out there who's a bit of a genius. He's done a beautiful job.
Routh is wonderful, he's brought his own identity to the role, and he is Superman.

In the end, it only matters what YOU think of the movie. Who really cares what Donner thought of if, who really cares what Tarantino thought of it. It isn't going to validate anyone's opinion.
Personally, I thought the movie was okay...a little 'eh'. Nothing Donner or Tarantino or Jesus is going to say is going to turn a light on in my head and make me realize its the greatest movie ever.

I don't mind reading a million reviews, if it offers something interesting or different to consider. (Pro OR Con) These two gents' opinions might not change anything in the world, but I'd find them fascinating nontheless.
Donner's perspective (even if he hated it) would be interesting, because he's the godfather of the film franchise, and SR is loaded with his influences. Tarantino's would be interesting, because of his own unique style of filmmaking and his own stylish love of movies in general. (If he wasn't a filmmaker, he'd be a great movie reviewer, if only for just the way he talks about Felini and the Silver Surfer in the same sentence--- that alone puts him in the 'very interesting to listen to' category.)

What's the point of discussion then? There isn't any! I mean, the movie is however many years old. You all have seen it how ever many times you've wanted to. You all have your own opinions about it. Who cares what Tarantino thinks of it? Unless you are really into Tarantino and you hang on every word. A 20 page review of it!??! To me, the only thing useful about that is that it may help me go to sleep. To clarify, it comes across as extremely pretentious to me. Plus, it is so far after the fact. I dunno, rubs me the wrong way.

I find it rather cool. Since it seems from bits and pieces on the internet that Hollywood can be so political, that it's nice to see it when filmmakers can still geek out over another's film. The Academy Awards generally snub their nose at anything fantasy or comic-book related, so it's nice when noted critics or a filmmaker with some credentials like Tarantino actually drool over it. If any entity should be named pretentious, I think the Academy is the one to be named, over Tarantino in this case.
For Tarantino to write a 20-page review over a film that couldn't possibly benefit him any, seems more like an act of humility than bragging. Who gets big money or positive attention in Hollywood for doing a 20-page review for an old film? Sounds like a genuine act of love for a film, for my two cents.

Here's a thought:
Better than writing a 20-page review of SR for free---- Tarantino probably would be more helpful to Singer if he were to help him write the screenplay for MOS, following Singer's guidelines. (Or a comic adaptation of MOS. SOMETHING!).
Would never happen. But, just thinking about MOS not happening is agonizing even after all this time. *sigh*

UPDATE: Glad you folks are enjoying my bouts into temporary insanity. Another new scene follows this, with notes from the happy folks from the WB. Thanks! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Mods, feel free to combine with another thread, or delete completely. SUPERMAN RETURNS AGAIN by Quentin Tarantino FADE IN: EXT. - SPACE - DAY Similiar to the last shot of SUPERMAN RETURNS, we continue with SUPERMAN looking hopeful as he flies past the camera, smiling. SUPERMAN slows down. He closes his eyes. He can hear the cries of the world all at once. He tries to separate the voices. He hears MUNCHING. SUPERMAN's eyes pop open. He zooms down into Earth's atmosphere. EXT. - LEX'S ISLAND - DAY LEX LUTHOR is sitting at the edge of the tiny island we last saw in SUPERMAN RETURNS, and he is munching on some human bones. There is a fur coat and bones of a small dog on the ground next to him. SUPERMAN lands. LEX Superman! You've returned.... (angrily)...AGAIN! (*hence, the title) SUPERMAN Lex, you diseased maniac... SUPERMAN slowly takes off one of his red boots, with the tiny 's' shields on the bottom. LEX (with contempt) What are you planning to do...Superman? SUPERMAN Luthor, I'm going to get medeival on yo' ass. LEX's eyes pop open. SUPERMAN takes the red boot and with superspeed, pummels LEX's head into the ground with the boot over and over again, until he is a big red and blue blur. Lex's blood splatters everywhere, bathing SUPERMAN's suit in it. SUPERMAN looks at his suit. SUPERMAN Maybe this suit needs to get washed. I have to admit, it's been awhile. CUT TO: EXT. - DAILY PLANET - DAY PERRY WHITE is talking to JIMMY OLSEN, who is smoking an unusual cigarette. PERRY Olsen! Get in here! OLSEN's eyes are incredibly red. OLSEN Yes...chief... PERRY Where've you been? And what happened to you? I don't even recognize you anymore! OLSEN (lights up another unusual cigarette) Amsterdam...I mean, Smallville. PERRY Well, where's Lois? OLSEN She's.... questioning one of her sources for a story, chief.... PERRY Well, go get me some coffee! And a big mac! OLSEN 'Le' Big Mac.... CUT TO: INT. - AN ABANDONED WHEREHOUSE - DAY A dark abandoned wherehouse. A MAN is gagged and tied to a chair. LOIS LANE stands over him, and gently takes off her high heeled shoe, with the beautiful John Williams/John Ottman score to reinforce the moment. MAN I've told you everything.... LOIS pummels the MAN in the head with the shoe. LOIS Who do you think I am, some sort of fool? I'm Lois Lane, ace reporter for the Daily Planet, muthafuckah! Now you're going to tell me more about this "Brainiac" or I'll have Superman pummel you with his shoe, and you won't like that one bit! LOIS takes out a cigarette and lights up. MAN You know... you really shouldn't smoke... LOIS's nostrils flare. She turns on a boombox closeby, with the song "Can you read my mind?" playing from it, and then as it blasts, she takes out a switchblade and cuts the man's ear off. CUT TO: EXT. - SPACE - MIDAFTERNOON BRAINIAC'S SHIP floats towards earth. He sees a smiling SUPERMAN flying by, wringing out remaining water from his cape. The suit is incredibly bright, and clean, though. EXT. - BRAINIAC'S SHIP - LATE AFTERNOON BRAINIAC (A slightly green Samuel Jackson) scratches his head, then sees some snakes on the control panel of his ship. BRAINIAC ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! ... I'VE HAD WITH THESE MUTHAFUCKING KRYPTONIAN SNAKES ON THIS MUTHAFUCKING KRYPTONIAN SHIP! *** End of Sample Pages ****

I often think it's a toss-up between whether the disco version of "Can you read my mind?" or the elevator-music slow-dance version of "Maniac" by Michael Sembello (Of "Flashdance" for those old enough to remember) that would drive a person to hysteric acts of violence. ;p
