Wow, someone is taking it personally.
Why so angry, chief?

My favorite is George Reeves, with Dean Cain second, Brandon Routh third, Tom Welling fourth, and Kirk Alyn fifth.

let's hope Routh can really show us what he can do if there is a new movie. I want to see that mo-fo's acting abilities stretched to their limits and be impressed. I think he did well despite the crap he was given to work with. Actually, his lines weren't that bad. I'm mostly thinking of the girl's lines.
I wish his character as Superman would have been more sure of himself and more grounded with presence. I've seen enough teeny angst crap in Smallville. If they have to emulate STM then let's see Supes at full authority with people.
Lois, will you come with me..............please?
bullsh'it. He was the big story; he'd never have to go as far as begging.
Thread digression. You may continue.

Yeah I came off angry there, dunno why. Sorry pal. Meant no harm!
I really look forward to Routh doing more and really showing us what he's capable of. I saw greatness in him but I also saw a little...ehhh I dunno...blandness? Not really blandness but some kind of wall he had up or something. Like he wasn't 100% comfortable in the part. Maybe 90%. Make any sense?

One thing about Reeves, Reeve, cain and I guess Welling is that each gave an entirely originally performance. I appreciate it more when actors give a role something personal instead of continuing what we've seen before, perfect example being Roger Moore in Live & let die (infact all the subsequent Bonds, but Moore had it toughest IMO)
I find that Routh was a little too similar to Reeve. I'm guessing he was directed this way, but would be nice to have his own stamp. George Reeves was absolutely terrific, especially in the first two seasons and yet Reeve in 78 was totally different and still totally effective.
people will always compare Routh to Reeve if he's going to emulate him; however, if he gave an entirely original performance then he'll leave a unique footmark in the legacy.
That's what I'd like to see from Routh if a sequel happens.

Was also wierd is that to me Reeve looks like Superman and Routh looks like Reeve. But at the same time Routh DOESN'T look like Superman! Is that wierd?

Make any sense? i totally get what you're saying. i liked him (and he is my favorite non-Reeve Superman, btw), but it does seem like he is refined or holding back at times. you can probably attribute that to a nobody being thrown into a part that mega. i don't think Reeve would have felt nearly the pressure of stepping into George's shoes as Routh probably felt stepping into Reeve's shoes. also, routh seems like a class act with a lot of respect for Reeve and Superman. he'd have to feel a little apprehension to taking the role by the balls and running with it. even with all that, he was still really good and even great at times. he'll be more comfortable if they give him another go, and i think he'd be magnificent.

Routh had baggage and strict direction. If he was in a reeve replica suit, I don't think it would have been necessary to do anything with a posture coach or anything. He's meant to be imposing by looks, not performance. Look like the Super, act like a normal man.
But. I don't want to derail this thread.
George Reeves IS Superman. Chris is really great, I tie him with George, but George did it best with a nod and a wink. Charming and disarming, but strict when it matters.

Perfect description. Reeves was great with the heavies, great with the kids, great with Lois, etc. He elevated that show big time. Great, great actor. Like Reeve I believe he was classically trained.

He's meant to be imposing by looks, not performance. Look like the Super, act like a normal man. . I really disagree with this part. I think it's the opposite actually; Brandon's posture coach said it best in the docu, that Superman's real power comes from within. And I think Brandon learned his lesson well. To me, George and Dean (and Welling to an extent..) played both Superman and Clark basically the same, the only difference were the glasses. So, that's a negative in their performances, in my view. Plus I don't like Metropolis Clark being 'the real person' and Superman the disguise. It just doesn't work for me. George in particular, was just too one-dimensional to my tastes. I like my Superman more real. If I had to describe all these actors as Superman with one word it'd be something like this, Alyn: funny Reeves: fatherly Reeve: charming Cain: mediocre Welling: emo? Routh: angelic So my vote goes to Routhe (duh), because to me he looks, sounds and feels like Superman, as if he existed in real life. And he is the most handsome too.

If I had to rank 'em from this list...
Reeves Routh (I reserve the right to elevate him after another movie, though!) Cain Alyn

Gotta go with Routh, he embodied the character even though the script let him down, I want to see him don the suit again.

My List
1. Christopher Reeve 2. Dean Cain 3. Gerard Christopher 4. John Haymes Newton 5. George Reeves 6. Tom Welling 7. Brandon Routh 8. Kirk Alyn
Some of you might think - Why is Superboy on the list?
It was an Alexander Salkind Production!
I wasn't going to inlude Newton on the list because I have a feeling a lot wouldn't agree.
But I need to be honest, I enjoyed Newton alot more than Reeves. Maybe due to Reeves suit etc - and they both had their hair parted the same way - so don't give me that joke, come to think of it - so did Routh!

Honestly, it's my fault...I should have included Newton and Gerard on this list. If Welling's on here, THEY should have been.
Gerard's Superman suit is the most faithful looking Superman suit ever seen in live action!
I realized my mistake right afterwards, and it wouldn't let me edit the actual poll.

Does anyone here not like Gerard? I thought he did great with the role. Damn shame there are no DVDs

It's a shame I don't remember Gerard in the role. I vaguely recall his episodes from when I was a kid. I did watch season 1 on DVD, and found them pretty terrible. I'd love to see the later seasons someday.

Season one was campy as heck. The other three weren't bad at all. Gerard was a damn good Superboy. I can see why Salkind wanted to reboot the series with Gerard as Supes. Some of the wire work stuff was awesome! Dare I say better than SR!

Agreed with that. Surprising drop in quality in Lois and Clark *holds cape infront of camera shamelessly*
Season 2 of SupesBoy was probably the best IMO what I remember.

It was pretty good stuff, even season one was pretty good. If I remember correctly, Ilya had all the techs from the films working on the TV series.

Wire removal was better on a Salkind-run TV show than a Cannon-run MOVIE. That says it all.

I voted for George Reeves, even though I've enjoyed all the actors, (although I haven't really watched Kirk Alyn, even though I own the serials on DVD.)
I don't mean to sound lame, but Reeves just has that twinkle in his eye. He had a lot of charisma and personality. I really never though I would say that, but watching the old shows as an adult really opened my eyes to how good Reeves was.
Dean Cain, I enjoyed his Clark Kent a lot. He gets unfairly criticized with name calling and such, but I really enjoyed his Clark. His Superman? It was solid; it worked IMO, but his biggest strength was playing Clark. He really made that character his own.
I enjoyed Tom Welling too. Routh channels Reeve without imitating him.
It's like Bond: I've enjoyed all the actors.

Remembered another point on Reeves' Superman/Clark: He does not compromise. Often he would nail down and get information from crooks, never letting up and never swaying from his morals. "No deals!" I remember from the episode "Crime Wave". Also, in other chapters, like "The Human Bomb", He makes it seem he's abstaining from interfering with the planned robbery, but makes a switch with Henderson via silhouette and recording of his voice to distract The Human Bomb so he can take care of them.
