I know that his transformation into Superman is a little abrupt.... he still has his slacks on lol ;D I heard that Donner wasn't satisfied with the transition... but how could he have improved it? Having a red/blue streaking blur hide the transition seems corny (it sucks in SII IMHO!!!) and Donner couldn't make Clark spin fast while falling as he did the spin effect earlier.
I think Donner should have just used the long shot to hide when the transition takes place. I.E. he should just show Clark jumping and then we see the small figure suddenly swoop upward, and then we get a close up and see that he is now SUPERMAN and see him streak past that bus and zoom around Metropolis! Basically the part where he 'morphes' into Superman should be cut!
Anyone agree with me... any other ideas of what Donner would have done to improve this part or what fan cutters should do?

I agree with you 100%.
I always hated that shot & your remedy for it sounds perfect!

Ugh, it wasn't just his pants, but his shoes too.

Couldn't someone just add trousers and boots in CGI? please

Well maybe they could add digital clothes flying off Clark as he falls.
Actually I did kinda like the way Routh transformes to Superman when he flies up the elevator shaft. I like how he easily tears off his Clark Clothes... it's not realistic but it's a neat visual!

I'd like to know how Routh fits his super-boots into his regular work shoes.
After a few times, that elevator shaft must be piled in clothing.

I was hoping something positive was going to be mentioned regarding this - as if you asked what are my favorite 'key' moments in Part One - I would have to say 'Helicopter Sequence' and 'Sonic Greeting' changes! This is why I mentioned before that in Superman Returns – I don’t want to see Routh’s hair get messed up when he flies! It’s all magic! He is Invulnerable! Questions like how do his boots fit inside the shoes – or when does he have time to adjust the ‘part’ in his hair – does not fit the equation – so really – his hair shouldn’t get messed up when he flies!! I can’t believe you are all so bored with Superman that now you are complaining about one of the most iconic moments in the film!

Oh come on, even Donner complains about it.

Yeah.... a lot of the last 1/3 of the movie seemed rushed... I think John Williams even said it was a bit 'prestissimo' toward the end in order to rapidly finish everything up to make the X-Mas release date.

I was actually gonna use that as comparison. Because its the exact same thing we see in STM, only he's flying in the other direction. So, yeah, SR sorta did the same thing, only they got it right.

Yeah, SR did get that transformation right when Superman flies up the elevator shaft! It almost makes up for the pathetic "shirt rip" (if you can even call it that) earlier in the film!
I do have to ask though; how did Routh rip off his entire suit while flying up the elevator so easily? Was it a CGI effect or a pre-cut suit.... or.... was Routh entirely CGI there??? Sometimes I can't tell lol!
Regardless it looked great... definately a memorable and iconic SR moment.

Well Reeve didn't really wear "boots" he wore floppy socks, they could easily fit in his regular shoes I reckon. The thing that puzzled me was his cape; does he just tuck his cape into his underpants? Prolly explains why it's brown in... y'know... I had actually made a post about Superman's 'magical cape' that Jor-El said would protect him.... it maybe IS magical because it just appears on him and has the magical power to morph the rest of the outfit, pants and all, into the Superman duds!

Everyone who is perfectionist would find fault with the rushed FX.
If I had millions of dollars to burn, I would recreate or touch up the FX in STM that could use fresh polish... swap out legoland... slightly expand the scope of the earthquake... restore the motorcycle accident... and find a way to make the missile hijackings more sophisticated.
Warner Brothers, or any studio, for that matter, has never considered this route... why pour hundreds of millions into an unknown commodity when you can reintroduce a classic to a new generation of fans? I love STM as much as anyone, but it's just not going to have any chance of appealing to today's generation without a Joan Rivers facelift in the right areas.

WB should do precisely that to STM. They should also re-do a proper Donner SII using CGI to re-create all the missing Donner scenes; it would work!!

I think Donner intentionally wanted to mirror his two films with Clark jumping out the window at the end of STM and Lois jumping out in the beginning of SII.
It's just like Lucas had similar 'rhymes' in his Star Wars flicks...
