Because of all the long shots and Lois' covering her face in the 'depowering sequence' in the RDC, I assumed that these were new shots of a double, composited in. After seeing this in Capedwonder (I saw it before, but forgot about them)--- looks like the shot of Lois' covering her face WAS shot by Donner (not a double that Thau shot) and is presumably Kidder. We know that there was a costume test (with really big poofy hair and a less flattering shot where Lois looks to the left and right in the docs).... but these seem to suggest that Donner shot the footage with Lois there- and/or a double, but it's NOT Thau reshoots, like his hands shot for the repowering sequence- but did Donner not shoot closeups of Lois? Or is it just bad editing by Thau (once again)? www.capedwonder.com/images/picture-folder/images/Donner-years/fortress/_cs_Lois1.jpgwww.capedwonder.com/images/picture-folder/images/Donner-years/polaroids/Lois1.jpg

What's weird is that you have all these shots from the same sequence...and then- Tom.

Huh... I always figured that the shots were definately of Margot Kidder. I guess Donner just didn't do her close ups... OR was it bad editing on Thau's part??

Yup. Just that's what I said, too.
I know that Donner was under giant pressure to finish the Brando and Hackman stuff first- and presumably he wanted to film both Brando and Reeve in the same scenes (although they could have been done at separate times, I doubt Donner would, given how much he protects his actors)--- but it's definitely an enigma.
Salkind has/had accused Donner of overshooting many things from different angles- so it would just be ODD if Donner didn't shoot the closeups of Lois here. It's true that it probably wouldn't have taken much to recreate the FOS backdrop if there was a Lois closeup shot later on, but.... it's just strange.
It made more sense to me that the poor final effect of the scene was just Thau reshooting and compositing without Kidder available.... knowing know that it WAS Kidder, makes less sense. It's doubtful that Donner would leave something as major as that out, but given how he had so much on his plate with different units all the time, you never know....
(Only Thau knows. He had access to everything shot. *sigh*)

Well Didn't Thau say he didn't get to go through everything because there was so much?

It's one of the key scenes, though. The Brando scenes and the last Fortress of Solitude scenes, I would have thought should have been top priority.
Hopefully (1) you're right and that it WAS shot by Donner and EXISTS (and is being preserved properly) and (2) that we get to see the rest - particularly some of these shots either in a documentary or a better extended cut soon before we all die. *sigh* I'll give Thau some slack in that there might not have been a giant timeframe to get everything done- but- the choices made to change other things that were already fine as is, boggle the mind....

Well Didn't Thau say he didn't get to go through everything because there was so much? I don't think so... if he did please cite a source. Y'know, knowing Thau this is prolly what happened. Young Editor: "Hey Mr. Thau guess what I found?! The long lost completed blank bullets scene!!" Thau: "Aww... shit I just put in the screen test , will I have to start over and edit this?? Editor: "Well.... I could do it.... but actually Baird already edited the scene we could just put it in.... Thau: SILENCE IMPUDENT FOOL!!! I am Mr. THAU MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE AND WHAT I SAY GOES!!! Then Thau prolly swallowed the film whole and spat it out..... Then Donner sees the spattle and says "You did this to my footage?!

Even if Donner didn't get to the closeups back then, we're getting to the point where it would be no problem to "steal" a closeup of Kidder from somewhere else and make it look right.

In essence, that's how I feel about the RDC whenever Baird's stuff (presuming Lester kept it intact in SII) is trimmed at all by Thau.
Is Thau the ONLY one who pushed for this recut, though, and was wiling to do it? I keep wondering if Salkind (who said he almost got WB and Donner to go with a recut earlier) got his way and BOTH collaborated on a recut, what we would have gotten....or if it would have just blown up in an argument betweem the two of them sooner or later to make it all fall apart....
