Well it turns out the Lester cut ended up getting more fresh ratings but that isn't representative of the films true score. Besides the average scores of the two films on rottentomatos are nearly identical (7.4 for Lester and 7.2 for Donner) and there isn't even enough reviews for the Donner cut to truly get a sense of it's score. Also, on IMDB, the Donner Cut easily surpassed ther Lester cut (8.0 for Donner and a paltry 6.7 for Lester) I guess some people can like a movie at first but then get sour on it. Just like you were saying how you liked the Donner cut at first and even tried to put Donners scenes in your fan cut but now you consider the movie an insult and have a new appreciation of the Lester version . I'd also like to find those old Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones review threads... I'm sure they'd be hillarious! ;D |

Most, if not all, of the newly released footage was bogged down with inappropriately used Williams or Thorne score. That being said, scenes like the end confrontation at the Fortress was much better in the Donner Cut. Too much silliness in the original version. The music, the cohesive plot and the non-truncated love story is what tips the scales to the original Superman II for me. Even with the fake Brando voice in the beginning, the opening of the original Superman II is waaaaay better than the opening to the Donner Cut. |

Yeah... the Lester opening credits are badass. I also liked the voice over of Zod screaming when he is being carried away by the zone of silence.
I also agree that parts of the Donner cut are better than the Lester cut but I basically think ALL of Donner's new bits are superior. The only problem is you can't fit them all into a cohesive movie because it just wasn't finished.
Both directors shot about 3/4 of the movie right?
Well, I challenge you to watch only the material Donner shot for SII in chronological order followed by only what Lester shot in order.
Then tell me which unfinished "movie" is superior!

Does anyone even like the Donner Cut more than the original Superman II anymore?  I prefer the Donner cut. Even if it’s not perfect. Agreed. Though neither cut is perfect. Ever since I first saw the Donner cut, that's the only version of S2 I've watched whenever I'm in the mood to see the story though I've watched bits of the Lester cut. Not surprisingly, I voted for D.P. Jump w/ Screentest. I like how these scenes seem closer in mood and style to STM than the others. Also, Margot Kidder looks a lot better in these scenes and Lois comes off as more fun. She's a lot smarter and less mopy in the screentest than in the pink bear scene. |

Does anyone even like the Donner Cut more than the original Superman II anymore? I loved the Donner cut actually. But it's more of a curiosity since it's incomplete. For me, nothing will ever top the ABC extended cut however. That epic feel I got from the extended cut is something won't ever be topped. If I had made my own fan cut, I'd simply just add Brando to my SII extended and it could be one movie I could be stuck on an island with. I agree there. The Donner cut will have a place in my heart. So will the Lester cut. I don't think I could ever watch the Donner cut from beginning to end PER SE, but I still watch the Donner scenes, when I am in the mood. I CAN watch the Lester cut from beginning to end. I don't know about the rest of you but I HATE the 'modern' shots of the world today inserted in the film. Thau was CRAZIER than a sonuvabitch when he put those in. Simply irritating. Getting back to the point though, I agree with you enrique, my cut will always be the 1988 ABC cut with the Kiss inserted at the end. Ahh...I have that on tape (I taped it, hehe) |
