im sure its been talked to death, but lets face it, you can never have enough discussion about this particular scene. Id say its near perfect, just got to thinking a bout it there when i had my iPod on random shuffle and 'The big rescue' came on

Nothing comes close for me. It's always been my favorite scene in a movie since I could string together coherent sentences and thoughs. I don't see that changing.
I've perhaps watched that scene about two hundred times, maybe more, and it never ever fails to make me smile like a little kid or give me chills.

As a kid, I'd often rewind this scene and watch it all over again. Love it!
But then, as a kid, I'd skip over the scene where Clark meets Jor-El. ;D
As an addendum, when I got set up with my 5.1 system for the first time, the first thing I popped in was my STM DVD. Opening credits in 5.1 FTW!!!!

Agreed. Funny you say that, in 1995 my Dad picked up a new 68cm tube set. To showcase the glorious new 'big screen' we put in the STM VHS - and fast forwarded to the chopper scene for ultimate impact.
It's timeless.

It's a simple concept executed with such subtle touches that it looks real. No. Fuck that, it feels real.
Person falls to certain doom, shortly to be crushed by multi-ton plummeting hunk of metal. A panicked crowd. A small in-joke with the phone booth. The catch of the helicopter itself was perfect. Notice how as Superman grasps the leg of the copter, they take a slight dip as he compensates for the weight and balance, only to continue a smooth ascension to the helipad. The just-enough-but-not-too-much dialogue. The flyaway where he glides up and changes direction by a slight bend of his abdomen, setting up the next scene of the upside down flight, complete with perfectly timed camera and backscreen movements.
Beautiful.

Hard to say if it's THE greatest moment in a film series with so many great moments but it's easily THE definitive Superman movie moment. It also perfectly illustrates how we regular guys(symbolized here by Clark Kent) want to become Supermen for the women in our lives.

I had to see this on Blu-ray last night. Just for the one scene. It's awesome.
My second favorite scene is right before he turns back time. Right after Lois dies. His fascial expressions are priceless, then it's followed by a primal scream. That's freaking awesome.

the moment clark opens his shirt is my favourite moment in cinema, its perfect, the colour, sound, everything about it.
Then reeves lines, he nails absolutely every one of them, you couldnt fault him.

It’s my favorite scene too. But don’t you think it would have been better if Loïs was already falling when Superman take off?
- Clark’s change to Superman - Loïs fall - then Superman take is fly
It’s the only thing I would have change because the rest is perfect

No doubt it's the best scene ever, everything about it signifies the beginning of great things to come.
Just wish there was a detailed documentary, in the vein of Dangerous Days, not about the making of Superman itself, but of the making of THAT helicopter scene, from when Lois gets into the copter till the moment she faints away.
But then, Chris Reeve was adament about keeping some elements of Superman "secret".
