The takes we saw for the Brando/Reeve bits didn’t seem to gel but i’d put that on the edits. Donner’s ability to direct actors should be judged by his whole filmography and what actors have said combined. Some of it worked but there is a whole mismatch with other scenes not filmed. I still think that stills and storyboards should have been used to help give a better sense if his vision rather than stuff in the rewritten lester parts

Even CGI characters would have acted better than what we got in the Donner Cut

There was always a danger that the "quick inserts" of film were lost during the intervening decades. By inserts ,for example , I mean stuff like in STM, when Lois looks at her petrol gage flashing!.......it's literally just a few hundred frames of footage. For Donner's SII, the equivalent "quick snippets" would have been something like Clark shouting out to Lois from the Daily Planet window. Thau said in an interview that Donner insisted that he had actually shot that footage. And it makes sense that Donner would have done so because he shot the far more elaborate sequence in STM, where Clark exits said DP window to fly off and find Luthor. Chances are that the SII footage(Clark shouting to Lois from DP window) was lost because it was a very short piece of film.

I think one thing that has been talked about was how understaffed and low budgeted the Donner cut was. I'm not suprised if the Brando estate wanted $$$$ out of the budget--- but I do raise an eyebrow on things that couldn't be found. In an interview, Michael Thau said he looked but could not find the bit with the Kryptonian guard getting crushed in STM's 2006 expanded version.... but then it showed up in the TV extended cut in wide. Huh? It's not impossible that the lack of manpower and a tight deadline made some things impossible to find in time, but..... again, I really wish to death that we could see the other takes of Reeve and Brando in the repowering/depowering sequences to get a settled account on whether or not it was the editing choices or the performances on the day that resulted in everyone being underwhelmed with the final result in the RDC....
