In the Donner cut we were fortunate enough to get (albeit jarringly shoehorned in) two INCREDIBLE shots of Superman fighting the villains. Zod kicking Superman into the Statue of Liberty (was the shot of Superman spinning original material?) and especially Superman punching Non (finally Superman HITS someone ) into the building were soooo awesome to see. These almost blink and you'll miss it shots still has me salivating over what Dick Donner would have done for his Metropolis Battle. My question is while I know these shots were for a trailer for Dick's Superman II... is there any other information as to what this trailer would have been? Was it supposed to be put at the end of STM as a teaser?... or did Donner decide to quickly shoot material for a SII trailer once he knew the film was gonna be halted? And do you think there is any other material we have yet to see from this trailer? I know Gandy believed that some of the aerial battle had been shot... this would naturally explain the inclusion of Donner's battle bits in the Donner Cut. However, Thau explicitly stated that these shots came from a trailer that means that there is more information about the planning for SII than we know... so again, any ideas, thoughts, insights??.

My guess is (and it's only a guess) is that Dick was following the model that was already pre-set by the Salkind's Three and Four Musketeers which came before. At the end of Three Musketeers, there's a trailer (sortof) for Four Musketeers--- which was more of a flurry of shots than anything else, but actually pretty cool. I'm pretty sure that something like that is mentioned in the Mank script for STM. Pity it wasn't used, it also would have helped reinforce the idea to the public early on how much Donner shot for SII....
But, I'm with you 1000 percent on the Donner battle shots. If only...*sigh*...

There was a time when I think Russ and I and a bunch of others tried to convince the board Donner had done some Superman III scenes and it was common knowledge to those in the know. HAHAHAHA! God we suck.

God we suck. Dick Donner DID shoot part of Superman III! The opening shot of the Daily Planet was shot under Donner's supervision and Donner also shot the final bit of the film when Superman flies above the Earth. Also, the scene when Superman straightens and tilts the Piza tower was taken right off Donner's script for SII!

True...but the bit with the leaning Tower of Piza I'm pretty sure was Lester's--- the 'evil' look on Superman's face when pushing it and flipping off the owner wouldn't have made a lot of sense for any other film but SIII.

The original Tower of Pisa sequence was written by the Newmans. I'm glad the film [STM] ended the way it did, you leave the cinema on a high. Anyway, Dick doesn't like downbeat endings. I don't think any of his films have one except The Omen. Those battle scenes came from original film, not from the cut-trailer.

Did they come from a trailer or were they parts of what was to be the final film? If the latter is the case, why didn't they show the part when Superman says "Care to join your troops General?" and punches Zod into the cola sign? Surely this part was shot too if the other final ariel shots were completed! But the battle bits do seem like shots from a trailer because they are so quick... why aren't there more connecting pieces if they come from completed sequences in the film? Why did Thau say they came from a trailer anyway? Please fill us in!

I don't know why they were edited that way, I don't think the shooting of those elements was successful. Thau must have found the original footage to finish off the sequence, not the actual trailer.
I bet Dick would have junked all that and started again. He'd have had a different perspective once STM was finished.
