So, what's your favorite version of Superman's Fortress of Solitude and why? The old one from the comics with the giant key? the crystal palace from the Donner/Singer movies? The one from All Star Superman comicbook story? The Smallville one? The one from the Superman: Doomsday animated movie? Or the most recent incarnation from the comics by Geoff Johns? Am I missing any? And please post pics of your favorite one if you want. Here is a very cool link I just found. It's Geoff Johns' Fortress of Solitude: www.angelfire.com/mi2/dcuniverse/fortressofsolitude.htmlOr do you think the Fortress is overrated and should just disapear?

I like what Johns has done...it's a combination of the movie Fortress with the Silver Age/All Star Superman craziness thrown in. Superman needs a place where he can engage in alien pursuits and super scientific research!

As a child, I loved the one from the comics with the giant key--- liked the simplicity of it. When the Donner film came out, I loved how they re-invented it, and integrated that into the comics- it made a lot more sense and had more resonance as really coming from his homeworld in the movie version. So.... I'd have to say that my favorite was the Donner version, but it had a specific purpose to its origin and ending (*being his last connection to his Kryptonian heritage)--- and in a way, if Donner had continued with his version of Supes, I imagine that the Fortress would not have been re-created for any sequels if his Superman II had come out. The Singer version is a fascinating visual update, but without Jor-el, the fortress (as is) seems pretty useless, unless they display other sections of the fortress's design. I mean, besides talking to Jor-el--- and having a rather comfortable looking Kryptonian bed, what ELSE is there to do in the Donner/Singer version of the Fortress of Solitude? The new comics version of the fortress NOT being in the North Pole.? Ehhhh..... takes away from the fairy tale aspect of it for me. Supes was made in America, and the Fortress of Solitude belongs in the North Pole.

Use the john. ;D (That seat better be heated, though.) Aesthetically, I love the Singer Fortress. So damn sparkly in there. I'd wanna camp out for a few days and bask in the peace and quiet. Only downside is the likelihood of falling into a deep abyss; that place is more dangerous than the Death Star with its severe lack of protective railings.

I believe the crystals act as a database of all of Krypton's knowledge, so with or without Jor-El's spirit/ai/whatever it is, it still serves a purpose. I know the previous post crisis fortresses weren't in the North Pole (the first was in Antartica and another one was in the Amazon), but I thought the Donner style one was.

I thought the South America Fortress was just a second Fortress for Superman, just located in South America. I love the Donner Fortress.. but the Geoff John's Fortress is really really nice as well.

It seems like basically the same fortress as in the movie, just expanded upon. It's used as more than just a place to talk to Jor-El.

Teehee. ;D
Now that's a woman with the right priorities. I know I'd be asking where the loo was straight away.
Y'think it might be a biday? I figure Kryptonians are too sophisticated to wipe.

The STM fortress and all the variations on it are my favorite.
They all drive home the point that its ALIEN technology.
the STM one set the trend but theres things i like about all the variations on it. I LIKE the green glow of the SIV one despite the lack of scope and scale. the exterior shot is eerily cool.
The Singer version looks less permafrost white and more crystalline which is even better. i like the massive scale of it.
Not fond of the rainbow glows of the Smallville version though. Looks like they tried to ape the crazy colors of batman 66.

That's what I've always liked about Donner's Krypton, despite being so stark and cold and colorless. It's not quite the "futuristic sci-fi" city that an alien world tends to wind up looking like. It's unique, if not necessary appealing. This is a civilization who grows their structures organically instead of building them, something we're not accustomed to. But compared to Krypton, the Fortress, while using the same architecture, looks a lot more magnificent and beautiful. All that transparency and depth and grand scale is a lot more apparent in Singer's updating of it. That's a Fortress I'd feel humbled in, a place where I'd want to speak in hushed tones out of awe and reverence.

Kinda painful to wipe, in a place with only crystals. (ouch!) About Singer's update of Donner's set.... The place does look more like 'crystals' with the aid of CGI--- in looking at the storyboards for the original Donner film, one wonders if - the technology existed at the time- if the Singer version resembles more of what Donner would have wanted, if it were possible at the time... (though I'm totally fine with the snowpack version of the FOS in STM)

imo:
alex ross and timm-verse did a great job of combining all of the silver-age concepts with the donner-verse/john barry design.

I always loved the crystal castle but I’m curious to see the ice mountain with the giant key in a movie. In the comic books, there’s a lot of computers, museum, the bottle of kandor and Superman robots in the FOS. If it don’t looks like a batcave, it can be cool.

...interesting....
right now in the comics they have this amalgamation of the old silver-age version and the crystals . i like that - alex ross' design in kingdom come was spot-on.
why not go for that retro sci-fi stuff ?

The one in STAS! It's a underground cave and Superman converted it! Jor-El making it? Yeah it's ok! Part of his heritage I supposeut bto me Fortress of Solitude is a place on Earth humans haven't industrialised where Superman finds solitude and peace. He "decorates" it himself in memory of his heritage rather than the work being done for him. I love the statues in STAS!

I like the current comic approach, which is the crystal construct movie version, but inside it's full of the crazy computers and silver age weirdness from the old comics.
