yes it could have been written differently, but at the same time, I think you guys are expecting some sort of 30-minute chemistry 101 breakdown on the subject. Finding the middle ground between "lazy writing" and overexposition is the key.
If you're going to criticize, be prepared to point out an alternative solution. Generally speaking, I love how politicians are so good at finding reasons to shoot down an idea, and yet they have nothing better to offer.

I'd also add to this that it is a movie that is supposed to appeal to really young kids as well, and any theses about fictional radioactive rocks probably isn't all that necessary in the scope of things.
