While I agree with the general consensus that Superman II (theatrical) is better than Superman III, I believe that Lester delivered better set pieces on the latter.

I voted terrorists in Paris.
Junkyard fight is up there though.
I suppose the Paris sequence is slightly ruined by how HORRIBLE Margot Kidder looks.

I like all the choices, but I went for Junkyard fight. The only thing dodgy about that is the cut/paste job when Reeve is onscreen as Superman and Clark at the same time. (When evil Supes throws Clark or when Clark is choking evil Supes) I only like the Metropolis fight with all of the slapstick edited out. (Which I recently did) The chemical plant fire was a good scene, except its only purpose was to set up that mystery chemical for the end of the film. Other than that, the whole thing is completely extraneous....much like half of that film. ;D

All the sets of Superman 3 for me are more interesting than the ones used in Superman II. Like the chemical plant, the super computer, the junkyard. But best set scene, would have to be the junkyard fight, because well... you probably already know.. ;D

This is a no-brainer for me. The junkyard fight is the greatest scene from all of the Superman movies imo. Reeve's acting range was never more apparent than in that scene.

It's one of those 'left for the audience to decide' moments. I mean, it's possible Evil Supes was hallucinating, and his good self came through and prevailed.

It obviously was psychological/hallucination. No doubt. It wouldn't make sense otherwise.

It's not like Lester shied away from nonsensical plot elements.

I think the movie would've been better with a major super-villain.
I know Pryor is in a lot of the movie, but there's some good in SIII aside from Reeve. I love all the Smallville scenes. The chemical plant. The evil Superman stuff. I enjoyed the computers angle. I liked Robert Vaughn even though he was kind of a Lex clone.
For a kid, I didn't find Ricky as annoying as TPM Anakin, Jeremy, or Haley Joel Osment in anything besides 6th Sense.

I actually like Margot's look in the Paris scenes. Especally when she climbs under the elevator. She had some lovely legs!

The only Superman film I thought Margot looked bad in was Quest For Peace.

Surprisingly deep for a Richard Lester comedy film featuring Richard Pryor and Superman. It could be that it is the only serious, deep thing in the movie. I suppose it's perfectly possible with Lester's niche for making things funny, that it wouldn't suprise me if it was supposed to be funny. Personally I found it very dramatic and serious.

If only the Junkyard and Chemical Plant fire scenes set the tone for the entire film, Superman III would have been a great sequel. It's really hard to watch those setpieces when in the first hour, we have walk/don't walk signs fighting, blind jokes and pies in the face. The tone is all over the place.
The Smallville stuff is great except for all those weird misunderstanding gags like the records/plates and potato salad/too much mayo, and of course, the damn dog food. Lester's Superman II was plagued with stuff like that too. Deadly serious stuff (even the things Lester himself directed, and not just inherited from Donner) intercut with slapstick.

^A great sequel? Not sure about that. I mean, visuals and acting are good/solid, but you really need a good story to support all that. I dont' think SIII had a good story, did it? You know, this image REALLY is hardcore for a character like this AND for the time this movie was made. No wonder why it wasn't as succesful. Though Superman "sleeping" with Lois was hardcore too, no? Really, this movie franchise was never just for the kids, if you think about it.

If the rest of the movie's tone fit the junkyard scene and the chemical plant fire, then it would have been a great sequel.
The plot itself is not horrible, no worse than stopping a couple nukes from blowing up a fault line. If it was made without so much comedy (probably removing Richard Pryor's character altogether and replacing him with something else), it could have been better.
It wouldn't have been as deep as the first two, but it would have been ok. You have Superman KICKING missiles. Come on, that's awesome! ;D
