Conor's right.
BUT, that's not the reason.
When Clark is young, and with Lana, he's trying to figure his shit out. And he probably figures that either he isn't supposed to be with anyone, or he might physically hurt someone he's (ahem) "with".
By the time he meets Lois, he's starting to realize he CAN have a life, and still be the Superman he needs to be. AND Lois (at least she SHOULD be) is both emotionally and intellectually capable of handling a man like himself, simply because she's so completely independent.
And she likes it a little rough.

An aside: Did anyone else notice of Superman's 'imaginary three wives':
*Lois Lane *Lana Lang *Lori Leramis
and his mom named *Lara....
What's this obsession with 'L'- named women? Must be a kryptonian thing. ;p

Let's not forget his archenemies, Lex Luthor! He has a thing for double L's.

Well.... there's some folks' feeling that there's a sexual tension between Clark and Luthor in "Smallville".... maybe there's something to the connection. Hurmm.... Also--- you just made me realize: Lara's married name is: Lara-El! Wow. (and Lois' sister's name is Lucy--- not making this up, folks--- and when Kara came to earth in the comix, Clark suggested her alias be Linda. The house of 'El' (or 'L') indeed!)

Yeah, he has this thing for L's.
