YES! BIG TIME!
There's a few things that irk me about the Blu-ray. Due to it being HD you're able to see the black curtains when Krypton explodes and a few visible wires in some flying scenes.
Other than that it's really breathtaking! Especially the Smallville scenes. I bought my copy on eBay brand new for $15!

I wish it had the 1978 audio in PCM that's all its missing.

It's also missing the "Feed the Babies" deleted scenes from the DVD.
If we ever do see 1978 audio on Blu-ray, I bet it'll be standard 192kbps Dolby 2.0. The über Blu-ray for Casablanca had compressed mono audio. They couldn't even give us lossless audio to one of the greatest movies ever made.

ihavenolegs when krypton explodes what you can see is not curtains but a box like chamber the explosion was triggered in, the camera was on the floor looking up into the chamber which you can see in the explosion, then all the debris fell to the camera on which was looking up to it. And yeah in the blu ray version many wires are visible, when he grabs the helicopter, and when he lands on the balcony which id never noticed before

Thanks for clearing that up, Chris.
No matter what, the Blu-ray version is a must have if you're into cinematography! BUY IT NOW!

Seeing as it's an early Blu-ray release from 2006, it's begging to be double dipped.
With Superman Returns, we got a 1.5 dip.

Thanks guys. Audio doesn't bother me too much - I quite like the SE audio.
I think STM will be my next Blu-ray.

i have the bluray of STM while the 1080p picture is nice its not a huge leap in quality compared to the dvd release. i think warners did a great job with the dvd transfer and didnt do a re scan for the bluray.
Hopefully when they go back to STM to do a new transfer they scan it at a higher resolution like the recent bladerunner final cut at 4K.

Whether it's scanned at 1080p or 4K, it still ends up as 1080p on the disc.
The only thing is, the HD transfer for STM is pretty old. I believe it's the same master used for the 2001 DVD. There have been a lot more advances in technology in 8 years.
Going back to the old argument of the "defective" Superman DVDs, I think the 2006 extended DVD was from a new master, and the 1978 version and Blu-ray were from the 2001 transfer. Anyone have info on that?

I saw Superman II on 1080p HD tonight and TDK on Blue-Ray. I was impressed with the picture quality, but boy can you tell that some of the stuff is just cardboard in the background - notable is Lois at the window before she jumps out.

So you saw the Richard Donner cut?

Superman IV in HD will be hilariously bad, but I've yet to find it anywhere.
Just on the DVD, I can see the curtains used to simulate space in the moon scenes. If I turn the brightness up, I can also see the horrible wire removal technique in the moon scene. It's like they pasted black cutouts of black cardboard over the wires on the actual film.

It was on Comcast HD movies for a good month. But, I'm not gonna spend $6.99 on that crap.

So you saw the Richard Donner cut? Yes, I viewed it on a 42 inch screen (not my own) on HD-DVD. Is there much difference on the Blue-Ray. I thought the backgrounds were especially clearer compared to the normal DVD.

Blu-ray and HD DVD are basically the same when it comes to picture quality. Am I right, Jimbo? You're right about the wires, they're noticeable on regular DVD I can just imagine how noticeable they are on HD or Blu-ray.

Pretty much. The HD-DVD and Blu-ray both used the same video codecs and same transfers.
Now that HD-DVD is out of the picture, companies can now optimize the transfers for Blu-ray only, as in less compression. Early Warner Blu-rays had at least 20GB empty space since everything on the disc was meant to fit on a 30GB HD-DVD too.

Any ideas on how to talk your wife round to the HD experience? Being serious!

Does she have any favorite movies that are available in HD?
One idea is to show her Planet Earth in HD. Nature and high definition always go well together.

STM and Superman Returns are getting re-released in March in the UK on bluray, i guess with the missing Dolby TRUE HD audio tracks.

Makes you wonder why they're re-releasing SR. Doesn't it?

STM never had a TrueHD track, just SR. SR also got a PCM 5.1 track. Will STM have anything new?

i read it in a recent dvd & bluray review magazine. It was mentioned in the upcoming release list available the 16th March. I dont think anything new just guessed it would have a soundtrack update. But i did just find a bluray release coming out the 15th June on the HMV site..the dvd mag may have the date wrong. hmv.com/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?ctx=280;-1;-1;-1;-1&sku=936155

And yeah in the blu ray version many wires are visible, when he grabs the helicopter, and when he lands on the balcony which id never noticed before WTF? With the exception of one scene, I thought all the wires were painted out in STM. Higher resolution shouldn't make a difference in that aspect, no? WTF!!!!
