after our STM chat/commentary thingie, kind of gave me an excuse to watch Superman II and Returns. Maybe Returns has faded for me, but just a little. Still think its great. Really liked Bosworth this time around. agree with Jor-l and Crazy Asian Man, there's much more good than bad. Ya know, the last time I watched, I really warmed up to the Bos. That shot of her kicking off her heels to fly with Supes is one of the sexiest damned things Ive ever seen. Shes a very different Lois than what were used to, but I like the way she plays vulnerable with Big Blue. I also buy her love for the child. Great to see that im not the only one who enjoyed bosworth in SR

Viewing STM in that manner may make you a little weak in the knees and misty around the eye area.
It's somethin'. It's REALLY somethin'.

I don't hate Bosworth the way some do but she was one of the weaker Lois Lanes. She's ina different place than all the others though having the kid so its going to temper her some.
Now that she's older I think she could be MUCH better in the next one.

Odd that I'm watching this now. I still have the same gripes with it though, and Bosworth is still one of them. Too young and inexperienced as an actor IMO. Plus the pace seems all wrong from the start. It gets to a good start with krypton/credits, but its just there to pull you in. The start of it is the Lex part, and there isn't any cemented reason as to why he left and his reason to return to the Daily Planet and assume his role(something that the deleted scenes section shows though). It really does not grab my heartstrings at all like the original films. Keep in mind though that I AM watching this right now. But I don't make a regular attempt though, reasons stated.

Jimbo I think you need to post some pics of SR in 1080p on your TV in the other thread.

It doesn't look THAT great.
Superman Returns in HD is a heck of a lot better than SD but it is, by no means, an example of what good HD looks like.
It's decent to good, at best.

Just refering to Kate Bosworth for a moment, whilst i thought she looked too young to be that boy's mom, i thought that she played the motherly qualities really well and didn't go over the top as some might (without mothering experience).
I liked her lots. She's a different Lois as she's got a child and not the heckcat she was... she's mellower. it was a nice performance.
Much like Lex. He's not the STM Lex as he's done time now and he's changed but not in a good way. He's meaner.

I thought she was what she should be, considering all of the things that have happened to her since Supes leaving. Shes Jaded, subdued, motherly, cautious, but still spunky & tough to deal with. LOVE THE BOS. There, I said it.

She's a better actress than Durance. Bosworths problem is that she just doesn't seem mature enough. She can act though.

Durance does a better portrayal of Lois Lane, though

Durance does a better portrayal of Lois Lane, though Actually Allison Mack is better Lois Lane than both of them, IMO, but that's an entirely different discussion.

I don't see how. She seems to be a pretyt limited actress.
The best Lois Lanes have been Kidder, Coates, and Delaney if you want to know who REALLY got that character right and Durance really gets none of those qualities across that those three did.
Both she and Bosworth had the right stuff written for them to do but they are both missing that gung ho attitude that Lois Lane has but Bosworth puts in a more complex performance because of the way the part is written and that puts her over IMO.
The whole show just really has many wrong actors and improperly written parts.
The Kents really were the best characters on the show.
Schneider GETS that at its core the Jonathan Kent role has to have a wise fatherly element in it where he buts heads with his son but wants whats best for him. And John was good enough to bring that out.
O'Toole gets that for Martha who have to come from this internal place where you have the best of intentions and have a motherly feeling for your son and family.
Rosenbaum is a real pro because he's shown with TWO different DC character that he knows what makes them tick. with Lex Luthor he understands that Lex's entire personality comes from his own personal desire for greatness. not necessarily evil but greatness. But he also knows that he has to bend or break the normal rules of society to achieve this greatness and perhaps even feels its beyond him. Lex Luthor is such an intelligent person that his goals are far more lofty than simple good and evil and nothing will stand in his way. Rosenbaum has simply been hampered by bad writing.
Durance, Ashmore, Jones, and especially Kruek are not only miscast but they aren't coming from the right place.
Durance is playing Lois as Spunky but she's almost too artificial looking. Lois is a good looking woman but she's not a perfect woman. That's where the interesting dynamic comes into play with Superman and Lois. Superman is the pinnacle of otherworldly perfection but Lois is the great things about human flaws and nuances and how they make us who we are that fascinates Superman.
Jimmy is basically a good kid who is slightly awkward but looks up to Clark and Superman because of this. He sees himself as the junior member of the gang. he tries to be cool sometimes but he's not and he knows it. That's what makes Larson, McClure, and Hunnington So good int he part. And the guy can't be a good looking guy like Ashmore. It doesn't fit the character.
Kruek's Lana is a little to vapid and self absorbed with her own problems. Lana should be the ultimate embodiment of the sweet girl next door. Pretty in that innocent sort of way and intelligent enough that Clark Kent can talk to her about anything.
Haven't seen enough episodes with Supergirl to get a handle on what works with this version and what doesn't.

Kirok is actually dead right. he beat me to the punch though.
Mack brings an air of curious intelligence to Chloe that Durance lacks as Lois. I think if Mack was a little more tough around the edges she would be Lois.

The Music and Routh stop it from being a total abomination IMO. I just can't watch it. I've watched clips every now and again, but as a whole, I just can't sit through such heavy-handed, dull drivel that never seems to end.

You didn't like Sam Hunnington as Jimmy? Spacey was anything but dull I though. Its strange that some people complain he wasn't serious enough.

Sam H was OK, but pretty forgettable playing a standard akward young guy (no red hair?). I didn't see anything "Jimmy Olsen" from him (same goes for McClure)
Spacey disapointed the most. Mind you, he didn't have much to work with. What an awful script. Hackman had so many wonderful lines, Spacey's most memorable is "bring it on" and "WROOONG!"
Truly pathetic.

Considering he was the only one ruthless enough to come close to killing Superman i don't see how that's forgettable.
As much as I liked Hackman the only time he was every really effective in trying to kill Superman himself was in IV. I swear Austin Powers was making fun of hackman. What bad guy leaves the room to assume the hero is dead? Shea was too busy trying to romance Lois Lane to do anything. The less said about Smallville the better.
And as far as I know NO actor who has ever played Jimmy Olsens ever had red hair. Hunningtons weird strawberry blondish hair was a lot closer than Landes jet black or McClures brown hair. And Jimmy is the forgettable awkward guy. thats the whole point.
I'd easily put Hunnington third behind Larson and McClure.

Tommy Boyd was the worst Jimmy for me. Then Justin thingy from L&C, the Sam H, then McClure, Larson then Landes.
