Don't we? I think so. And we often champion him as the greatest superhero alter-ego. But is he really? I think he can justifiably be thought as such, because of his complexity. What complexity, you ask? Well, while it's true that many would initially think of Clark as a one dimensional character that exists purely to cover for Supes in everyday life, I think it's interesting to note that he behaves differently depending on his exact situation. How he acts at The Daily Planet with Lois and the gang (nervous, shy, clumsy) is a direct contrast to how he acts in Smallville with Lana (more at ease, natural and confident). This is taking the movies as our source, of course. Then there's the fact that he's also Kal-El, which opens up a whole different discussion as to which of his alter-egos is his true character. Does he have a personality disorder? Does he like having to take on these different guises? Personally, I've often thought that every variation of him is the real person, just different facets. Varied states for various situations. But if you want to pin me down to a definite opinion, I think the Smallville Clark from Superman III is closest to the real him.
Anybody like to chime in on this?

To be honest, Jim, I'm both shocked and upset.
I rarely take a detour into the Superman sub-forum, much less post in here or even start a new topic. But I figured that, seeing as I'm an admin of the forum, I should make the effort. So I do just that, while at the same time making a very thoughtful thread. And what happens? I get accused of Warlock spamming based purely on a freak coincidence related to how I chose to title my discussion.
I confess to nothing.

Bob, have you seen Superman Returns yet?

Erm.................no. But, I do kinda have an excuse there. You see, MAV has sent me his definitive cut of the film and advised me to see that for my first viewing. Unfortunately, it was dispatched to an address where I currently am not. So, as soon as I return there I will watch it. And the Donner Cut of SII eventually as well, I guess.

Watch the theatrical cut first. That is the director's intended vision.
Mind you, if it's taken 3 1/2 years to get hold of a DVD then your interest must be incredibly low in the first place.

Mind you, if it's taken 3 1/2 years to get hold of a DVD then your interest must be incredibly low in the first place. Hey-hey-hey, them's fightin' words. OK, so I'm a long way from the biggest Superman fan here, true. I think it's safe to safe my greatest interests and real passions lie elsewhere. But Superman II is and always will be in my top ten films of all time and Chris will always be one of my heroes. And just so you know, I did buy that huge DVD set as soon as it came out in late 2006. I even shecked out extra to import the region 1 version with the fourteenth disc in it. I just never got around to watching any of it, that's all. But it's safely stored away and I'll get to it one day. Patience, Russ, I will watch it and anything else I've yet to see eventually.

So how does he know what's best at this point?
Simple, watch the theatrical first - as we all did. Only then will you get the desired experience, for better or worse.
Your call of course but I reckon it's pretty retarded to watch a fanboy cut over the original for the first viewing. No offense to Maverick; I am pretty certain your cut is better, but Bob should watch the original first.

Whatever he wants, doesn't matter to me.
I'm just saying he can make up his own mind.
And how can you be pretty certain its better? You've never seen it. ;D

Sorry, couldn't resist.
See, I knew this topic would take off eventually. Despite Jimbo's attempts to sabotage it.

Aye, I'm pretty slick.
Regarding the debate Russ and MAV are having, I do accept that I probably should watch the original theatrical cut first. The number of fan-cuts that have been made of Superman Returns suggest there was something inherently wrong with Singer's released version and that it needs tinkering with, so it wouldn't surprise me if a fan-cut did turn out to be a better experience for me. But objectively, I suppose I should watch the original version first, yeah.

It is the common sense thing to do. I certainly would not want to watch any fan cut over a theatrical release (especially Supes) first.

Yeah, you're right. I nearly watched a fan edit of the Donner Cut of SII last year rather than the released version for the first time, but I decided against it and am glad I did.
The upside to watching official versions first is that, if they are as bad as some make out, then I can subsequently watch fan-edits and see an improvement. If I do it the other way round, I'll see the better cuts first and think "yeah, OK I guess", then probably want to gouge my eyes out after seeing the official ones. Better to have a steady incremental increase of quality than a decrease, I think.

Superman Returns was just a fan cut of STM, with some X-Men stuff spliced in.

See, MAV, I get what Russ is saying about your cut being better (even though he hasn't seen it). It probably is, given the amount of fan-edits out there. By that I mean that it says a lot that even someone such as yourself, who thinks the film is great, thought that it needed modifying in some way. It sounds to me like a film that was made very well with the best intentions, but that was also plagued by some bad editing decisions that hinder it as a result. So yes, I'll watch the theatrical first and then see the improved MAV cut second.

it says a lot that even someone such as yourself, who thinks the film is great, thought that it needed modifying in some way. I didnt make any modifications to tone or editing. I like those things just fine. I just added back in stuff that never should have been deleted. Stuff I bet he was pressured to delete by WB. The evidence is that even the effects are completed.

Ah, so your cut is an extended edition as opposed to a fan-edit? Well, that's even better. While I do find fan-edits fascinating curios, I actually prefer extended editions that simply re-integrate footage that was deleted from the released version of a film. ADM's work is a prime example of that. So it sounds good to me, MAV.
