When I didnt see the real Superman-Chris Reeve-then I knew it was gonna be crap. Case closed. Going to be 4 years and no sequel to SR speaks volumes.

Working on two years with no sequel to Dark Knight. Was that a failure?

Working on two years with no sequel to Dark Knight. Was that a failure? The Dark Knight was the sequel! and a fantastic one to Batman Begins after 3 years. The recent Batman and Spiderman movies put SR to shame. Seeya routh...

So if a movie doesn't get a sequel, then it's a failure. However, that rule does not apply if that movie is in itself a sequel. OK, got it. Never mind the fact that SR is a sequel of sorts. Maybe it's only a partial failure then? WB is so stupid. They could put out another Batman and Robin and it would make at least another 500 million, based solely on how the last one did. But it's been two years without a word. I'm more quick to blame an inept studio than a movie.

'Case closed' if a new Superman movie doesn't star Chris Reeve? What are they supposed to do, clone him?

Right back at you, Stargazer- Though I find it funny (in a good way) that you love both SR and Chuck even more than I do- I thought I had big love for them, but yours is even stronger, and the forum benefits from all the articles you link to it.
Singer I thought was easily the best man for the job to take on this kind of story. To take Superman into a visual mindless action blockbuster I think is not difficult- there are plenty MTV style directors with good eyes (Michael Bay)- but to make it a superhero film with such emotional depth and richness - and not seem schmaltzy--- seems to be something only a few directors can do.
Also, the director would have to have a personal connection to it- Which is why I think Sam Raimi or Christopher Nolan--- as much as they both loved STM as an inspiration.... I doubt they would have been as good a fit for Superman as much as Singer.
I'm sure they would put out a good film if they did do Superman, but the strength of SR to me is how personal the film felt- and that usually only happens when the director has as deep a connection to the material as Singer did.
With Spiderman, Raimi really made it his, with the quirkiness of the original comics a good match for Raimi's own quirky touches on his films.... just as Nolan's films generally have a dark tone and fit Batman-
In any case, I have a hunch that most SR haters (not the ones who thought it only ok, but real haters) wanted popcorn fare--- nothing wrong with that, but when a filmmaker tries to do something really special and isn't even done telling the complete story, it hurts to hear it bashed.
I guess the phrase, "No good deed goes unpunished" can apply to SR... as it feels like Routh and Singer are being punished for doing a movie too good to appeal to every demographic on the planet (although it's still hard for me to fathom how $400 million is so easily dismissable) sadly. *sigh*

SR just broke even @ the box office from what I heard. Batman Begins cost and made less.
SR was a bad movie too, I consider it a failure that there was no sequel greenlit ASAP after 2006.
There should have got Bruce Timm & Paul Dini, they GET Superman.
Keep Singer away. Of course anyone out there that hasn't seen SR, watch it and judge for yourself. it could be awhile till we see another Superman film....

Even though I'm not a fan of Superman Returns, I do think Brandon Routh was superb. The guy deserves the chance to star in another Superman movie.

I loved Bruce Timm's JLA/JLU--- and enjoyed some of Superman- the animated series, but I HATED what he did with "Superman: Doomsday"--- I'm not convinced he would be the go-to guy for what I'd want from a live-action movie yet. Of course, we differ as to what we thought of SR--- but I'm glad that you mention for people to make up their own minds first either way. At this point, though, it's moot on whether one is a Singer fan or not a Singer fan--- because it looks like WB isn't giving us ANYTHING in terms of a new Superman film for awhile.....

What made a Superman Returns sequel untenable was that Superman had a son with Lois, and you would have to payoff that storyline... otherwise hope everyone forgets while Lois and Superman never discuss their son who is "away at summer camp," and hopefully not abusing his developing powers outside the girls' showers.

That's actually one of the GREAT things that I liked about the film--- it was a SPECIFIC vision, that HAD to be paid off. You're right--- it was a turning point, that couldn't be ignored. I LOVED that- but, obviously, that's where fans split.
Singer could have chosen a path where Superman didn't have a kid, and have the ending be open in any direction--- but by taking this creative choice, it put (imo) Superman in a far more interesting (and vulnerable) choice by taking on a new role as a parent---
In the comics, Superman and Lois are married- but, it's become a big 'so what'--- as there haven't REALLY been any consequences to it.
With Superman having a kid, it forces a Superman movie to go in a direction that actually pushes him out of 'neverland', where nothing changes and nothing grows (or dies) to a place where significant characters (outside of Lois/Jimmy/Perry) can die or be harmed, and it (1) is totally possible, and (2) plausible in that world.
If Superman/Lois couldn't take their relationship any further past Superman II, SR found a new way to do it. It wouldn't be an easy creative way to go forward, but that's what I loved about it: Singer had some idea on how to move forward on it... and his movies can be argued for many things, but sentimental or sappy is never one of them.
Hopefully, he'll share how he would have done it SOMEDAY (comic book form? hope so...)
