I was watching some wonderful Orson Welles documentaries --- and he sounded disappointed that he wasn't offered big parts like the role of Godfather. Directors used him as a cameo to squeeze more money from studios but I suspect that most big-name directors were afraid of him because he always came up with something better for his own scenes -- but he'd never direct himself in someone else's picture. Now, I think Orson Welles as Jor-El would have been pretty awesome, of course he wasn't that big in the 70s and the Salkinds would have had trouble attracting big investors, but I think he would have kicked ass.

Would have been great, but I think they made the right choice with Brando.
Did Orson narrate the trailer for Star Trek: TMP? I know he was in Transformers: The Movie. Quite a career.

If Donner & the actor had gotten along better, I would say GREGORY PECK as being even better, though.
Orson at that point I think outweighed Marlon in the donut-eating department... (though on the flip side, it would have been interesting to see what Orson would have done in collaborating with Donner as well, if he was hired.)

Elvis would have made an AWSOME JOR-EL "The Father, The Sun and The Momma. That's all right Momma!"
I loved Orson Welles and his work, but the guy got fat later in life. He would eat around 20 Pinks (in Hollywood) Hot Dogs in one sitting!

Was Orson fatter than Brando at that point?

Brando had the whole "green bagel in a suitcase" thing. Imagine what kind of shenanigans Welles would pull.
Like this, perhaps?

Was Orson fatter than Brando at that point? Around Superman you mean? Yeah probably. By the 70's Orson was LARGE, and in the 80's he was VERY LARGE. From what I have read he used to eat a lot in the Kane days as well. Being constantly busy and a good metabolism kept the weight off. I read a story about how he ate 3 huge baked potatoes and 2 steaks a night! And that was while filming Kane! ;D Man's gotta eat!

I remember reading somewhere that Welles was going to play the Baron Harkonnen, in Alejandro Jodorowsky aborted Dune Movie in the 70s.

Yep, he was big but the guy could play anything. I really like what he said about the movie business: "98% hustle and 2% moviemaking"
and
"Film-makers should be innocent, and don't fall in love with directors because you will imitate them or be afraid to imitate them"

even not as Jor-El, But I think he would have been excellent as part of the council, to see brando and welles go head to head on Kryptons impending fate, the could have put the cue cards on welles stomach to keep Brando on course with his lines!
