Why do so many of us think this line is so crap and worthy of ridicule?
I was trying to put my finger on the reason, but can't.
Is it just a crap line? Or the retarded way it's delivered? Or something else?
In a lame movie, filled with lame crap, why does that particular line stand out as being especially stupid?
Please?

I think you're the only one that has a problem with it.
But, it's the pause between deadly and to that may get on your nerves.
Why you ask? I had a college professor about 10 years ago that would take long pauses while his was lecturing. It used to get on my nerves.

It's not a great line. It's just a statement.
There's certainly things to criticize in SR that deserve it, but this? Not really.

The line is just fine. Bosworth's delivery was sooooo flat. Way too matter-of-fact.

Love the line, love the delivery.

It comes down to the fact that the line itself is over explanatory, and Bosworth couldn't act her way out of a wet paper bag.

While I have no problem with the line or the delivery, what I do have a problem with is Lois having to explain this to Richard, who's a big timer at the Daily Planet where Superman's exploits have been reported for YEARS. You'd think he would have a rudimentary understanding of these things by now.
But I understand Richard is filling the role of the unindoctrinated audience who might not know Kryptonite is deadly......to Superman.

It's one of the only groaners I've had for this movie. Reason?
#1: It goes against the logic of that universe. WHO on that planet wouldn't know who Superman was, what Kryptonite was, and what its effect was?
#2: For Richard White not to know makes Richard the dumbest person at the Daily Planet- and he's supposed to be an editor there!
I get that the line was for those movie audiences who wouldn't know--- but they should have had maybe Parker Posey's character (who is supposed to be dumb anyways) ask Lex.
Having Lois having to spell it out to a news editor...SLOWLY with pauses--- is what made the line hurt.
If Jason (the cute little kid) asked that question, he'd be shot. Having Richard ask the dumbest question on the planet makes it a little less painful, but there's still pain. ;p

Whilst I liked (just liked) the Bos's performance, I think Vally boy's more or less right.

Midichlorians? Microscopic lifeforms in all living things. They're deadly... to Star Wars fans.

Now, SR may be a flawed movie, in my eyes, and it may be fun to have a laugh and a joke every now and then, but I, being a pretentious elitist snob who moans about corruption and injustice (a sort of pseudo-bourgeois Batman, y'see) and getting attacked, must come to the movie's aid on this one. It's one of the only groaners I've had for this movie. OK. Reasons. I like reasons. I eat reasons and shit paragraphs. #1: It goes against the logic of that universe. WHO on that planet wouldn't know who Superman was, what Kryptonite was, and what its effect was? In the STM/SII chronology, which Singer was fairly tightly following, only a handful of people are categorically shown to know about Kryptonite and its harmful effects. It's reasonable to assume that it isn't common knowledge. Only in OUR world. #2: For Richard White not to know makes Richard the dumbest person at the Daily Planet- and he's supposed to be an editor there! See above. Richard would know more know than Jimmy. Or a cleaner. Or dear ol' Boog. I get that the line was for those movie audiences who wouldn't know--- but they should have had maybe Parker Posey's character (who is supposed to be dumb anyways) ask Lex. It's unclear whether there was ever meant to be a Miss Tessmacher in Singer's universe (he followed the Donner movies, but not to the letter). In light of that, PP may have been at Lex's side when he hatched his "Adis Ababa" plot, instead. Or maybe he never hatched one. Maybe she knew about it some other way. Or maybe she never even knew to ask. Having Lois having to spell it out to a news editor...SLOWLY with pauses--- is what made the line hurt. She pauses because she's rattling off a list of dry facts and it hits her that this is a person she cares about. She gets to his actual vulnerability, and when she hears herself saying, "it's deadly", she catches what she just said and her feelings momentarily surface. See, Lois is constantly trying to appear detached and not show her emotions in SR, but they're constantly bubbling away, just below her cynical veneer. I think this hurt SR in some ways, making Lois seem rather unlikeable in certain passages, but it was a valid choice on behalf of Singer, and Bosworth executed that vision well. If Jason (the cute little kid) asked that question, he'd be shot. Having Richard ask the dumbest question on the planet makes it a little less painful, but there's still pain. ;p Yeah, I get you. Still, it fits the story. Granted, there do seem to be genuine msifires and logic gaps in the film, in my opinion, but I don't think that the line about Kryptonite is one of them.

If it's a lame film, why do you continually talk about it? I'm guessing that you've seen it more than once? Two, three, four times? Dharm, ATP hates just about everything unless it's a certain movie beginning with a "W" that shall remain nameless. ;D corruption and injustice and getting attacked Johnny, I'm sorry if you feel you've been treated that way. And I am looking into it and will hopefully sort it out. But it's probably best not to keep bringing it up in public as it's only going to anger others and fuel speculation. But I am aware of your grievances and will try to put an end to them. It's just best not to air them out in the open, I think. If you have any further issues regarding your treatment then please PM me about them. That goes for anyone else too. Thanks. Brevity. It's deadly ... to Johnny. Light-hearted ribbings in public are OK, I guess. ;D

Actually, Bobby, I was trying to make a joke of it, to preface my sudden defence of SR, which I foresaw taking the form of multiple paragraphs, and I was right. Light-hearted ribbings in public are OK, I guess. ;D Yeah. Besides, ATP is just nuts.

ATP and Hurst told me not to bother. They're usually on the mark about this sort of thing, so I figured I'd do something else with those 150 minutes instead.

The great thing is, you can watch Warlock one and a half times in the time it takes to watch Superman Returns. That's 150 minutes well spent.
