In the comics---- initially.....way up until Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight", Superman and Batman were considered best friends, right off the bat.
The concept was: they're both crimefighters, and saw each other as allies and were even best buddies to a degree.
Then, when Frank Miller came along and did "The Dark Knight", it was the first time there was a (serious) attempt to show that these two were so different--- that both would be like dogs and cats- inherently, and could never REALLY be friends.
Superman would have disdain for Batman's bending of the rules and his methods of challenging (or undermining) authority.
Batman would fear Superman for both his superhuman ability and naivete.
Since--- (if WB still wants that down the line) --- WB was adamant about eventually doing a "Superman vs. Batman" live action film--- now that we've seen a good number of versions of both on film--- what do you think?
Do you think that it's more likely that these two characters would/should realistically be friends on film, or constantly distrust one another at the core, and see each other as a pain in the neck?
I grew up with them in comics being good natured friends who were glad that each one existed--- but also saw the radical 180 put into DC comics when they rebooted them as uneasy allies who respected each other.
Thoughts?

i am... not convinced those options get it. they arent supposed to like each other- at first- and- not for a while. but working together they build respect, and even though they arent ever going to be beer buddies they grow to admire and be fond of each other. bruce timm's "worlds finest" nailed it. and i actually WANTED wolfgang petersons worlds finest flick that ALMOST happened. so i geuss i would vote for: " at first they're cats and dogs but over the course of time become mutually respectful and transcendantly friends on a larger level "

Yeah, I agree..... couldn't think of a better way to phrase the fundamental differences of how the friendship was in comics BEFORE Frank Miller's version and after.
YES- "They're friends who like each other" or "NO- "THey're friends who hate each other" might have been better. (unfortunately I can't access the option to change the options) ;p

I don't think 'disdain' is the right word. I think they mutually respect each other, they just don't agree with the methods each other uses. I haven't read any recent comics with the both of them so I do not know how their relationship has progressed.

They should be friends, mutual respect and otherwise.

I don't think Superman and Batman should exist together at all.
Superman could take out Joker in like 10 seconds. Drama over.

I'm torn on whether I could see the SR and BB/TDK worlds co-existing. If they did, I think that they would get along fine. This version of Batman seems a little more heroic and less vigilante than our generation's comic Batman. Even though the tone of the films is dark and realistic, the Batman that lives therein seems more akin to the Super Powers type Batman. Maybe I'm looking at it wrong, but Nolan's Batman seems much more morally tame than Burton's Batman. The only thing I could see really getting in the way of Routh's Superman and Bale's Batman relationship is some grip getting in Bale's light.

Their relationship in the Batman/Superman comic series (Jeph Loeb's run in particular) is how it should be. They're allies, but not the best of friends. They have the same objectives, but go about different methods of achieving them. They understand each other, even if they don't always agree with each other.
I'd love to see a live action meeting of the characters though. With Nolan's stance on a reality-based Batman and the Superman film franchise clinically dead at the moment, it might be a while though. But if you ask me, a stand-alone "Dark Knight Returns" film would be a great way to break the ice.

I don't think Superman and Batman should exist together at all. I agree. I'm for separate entities. The themes are far too different to shoehorn together in one universe much less one story.
