With so many actors taking part in flying effects nowadays there is no shortage of films using wires. With CGI being so effective the wires never visible and you can put the camera in any position to achieve the best results but all the actors suck at flying realistically. Keanu Reeves looked so stiff in the wires in the matrix and the x-men films most of the actors just looked like they were struggling to keep steady.
No one at all looks graceful and moves in fluid fashion compared to Chris Reeve, he set the benchmark. You can have the best effects team in the world but if the actor isn't moving properly to make it look real then the whole effect won't work.
What do you fellas think?

Nobody's come close. Literally. And I've looked.
Chris Reeve pulled off the best flying scenes in the history of motion pictures. It's a shame, too, you'd think since 1978, flying sequences would be really improved on in everything else, but yeah, nooo...

Agreed. The concentration Reeve had (plus perhaps his own flying experience as a pilot to draw on) sold it like noone else.

have to agree. reeve's the best. he sold it every time. i love the turn he makes when he goes to rescue jimmy at the dam. and the take off from the helicopter pad is flawless.

I think Mark Pillow's flying was pretty good. Yes, the shoddy effects make a lot of the flying scenes crap, but his takeoffs and landings were good.

I would also say that Chris also had full trust with the wire team, as his life was in their hands, he trusted them, he was relaxed, was able to relax, full trust no matter what. You can see it with other actors, they are stiff, no trust what so ever, body language speaks volumes.

M is right. It's all about the entire team. You're hanging up in the air X amount of feet. One wrong move and down you go. Reeve trusted his team it the proof is in the pudding. Not to mention you did believe he was flying. Watching 30 year old footage of Reeve flying is more believable than anything nowadays.

Take offs and landings in SIII are far superior to anything I have ever seen.

What's your opinion on the 3 kryptonians in Superman 2? Do you think they were good in the flying scenes?
I liked the way Jack O Halloran moved when he's chasing Superman through the city.

by way of comaprison, there's a flying shot from a c. 70's superhero shazam show:
lots of flying shots in the shazam serial... some of them hilarious and others actually not that bad.

I love the take off shot in SIV after he saves his real life daughter from the tornado. Gracefully flies over the camera. Superman IV has some great take offs and landings.

Yeah, oddly enough it legitimately has some great take offs, better than SR if I am being honest. The way he propels himself off the ship in space right at the start and stretches his arms out is class. I should do a comparison and YouTube it.

Agreed- they ARE really nice. Reeve and the wire crew probably had it down to an art, by then. Sad that SIV wasn't better & give them a chance to progress from there in more sequels. *sigh*

Christopher Reeve needed wires to fly? I don't believe it!

The best Reeve flying, for me, is in Superman the movie when he is looking for Lex's lair, he flies away from the camera, around the building and then into Close Shot, realizes where his lair is and flies down. Also just after he saves Lois and he does his roll in the sky, amazing, graceful performance. Also like that they showed the raw footage of that sequence in the retrospective documentary.
In Superman II, I love the take off just after the man says "this is gonna be good!" Also like it when he flies to the island and lands all in one shot.
A lot of criticism was given to Zod, Non and Ursa's flying, but I love those shots of Non and Ursa when they are circling Superman after Ursa says "Let him prove it!"
In Superman III, when he flies over to save the man drowning in his car, though why no one could just bash one of the windows to release the water is beyond me. Also when he lands at the lake to freeze it.
In Superman IV.... hmmmm, I guess one that comes to mind is when he lands on Lex's balcony after he hears the message. Just a pity the rear projection took you out of the performance so much.
In Supergirl, I think Helen Slater really nailed the flying, that sequence where she first discovers her flying ability and flies over the galloping horses, it's near perfection! Though she did have the luxury of a full flying team and expensive rear projection "behind her".
Superman Returns had some great moments, like when the wing of the plane rips off, Superman looks behind him and then goes on after the rest of the plane. Also like the sequence where he flies to Lois' house and then when he flies up and up and up away from her house just to get away from everything. Just a pity that so much was relied upon CGI.
Reeve really nailed it though, studying aerodynamics and working with the effects crew for over a year!! to perfect the gift of flight.
