helen slater is a doll ( but then - thats my " type " of gal!! ) but the movie is HARD to watch. it fails on every level. maybe a skillful re-edit ( from a fan ) and some williams theme peppered through it ....

Kinda hard not to.
I saw "The Secret of My Success" the other day. She was great in that, too.

The problem with the movie (for me) was the script- There's a ton of story problems that have no logic, and using the villain as camp sealed the deal. (i.e.- why would Kara/the audience care about the girl's school hijinx in the film? Ugh.). Superman: The Movie used the villain as camp, aswell. If anything, in this movie it made more sense. You have a wannabe witch that happens up on a very powerful device. She wasn't much of a threat before that. Lex is a genius who chooses to hide out in a flooded subway station (or something) with a couple of bozos. Lex's humor is not camp. We laugh with the characters, not AT them. Dunaway and company BARELY make it as funny and not camp. And that's giving her extreme leniency.

For the love of Christ.... HOW??!
Even if Supergirl were made TODAY, that would be considered an extremely high price for something like that, so you can imagine how damn high it was back in 84.
Can anyone justify this?

Curious- did they state this in an interview or was a balance sheet shown somewhere? (If so, could you link it- I'd be curious how the rest of the budget was spent?) The credits were ok...(I could see that for STM's credits at the time, as people 'ooh'ed and 'ah'd as it had a 3-d effect of sorts when it played in the theatres in the 70's--- and even got APPLAUSE at some showings when it first came out- something I'd never heard since for a whole credit sequence)...but $1000,000 ?...wow.

Moonraker was one million dollars also. The credits had a bigger budget then Dr.No.

I don't think we should be laughing with or at the villains of a movie that's not a comedy. I'm just saying Selena and crew have an excuse, Lex doesn't. Lex a genius that can kill Superman, he shouldn't be the movie's source of comedy.

I used to love Supergirl when I was very young. I think given that it is quite a simplistic fantasy story most children see straight past some of the plot holes or more flimsy story-elements. I mean . . . it made complete sense that Selena was able to use the Omegahedron for magic as a kid. And I think you can see past some of the camp acting which as an adult is just too loud to ignore.
I still love the film but I see it's limitations. As a kid you just appreciate the essentials of the film and when someone in it says 'There's an exit to the Phantom Zone' or 'They must know the "wimp"' then you just accept it.
Plus I remember running round the house humming the Supergirl theme more than Superman.

I love Supergirl.
Slater's good in the role, but the rest of the cast is having such a hammy good time that it's hard not to sink my teeth right into the movie.
I mean, I fucking LOVE the way Peter O'Toole emotes, "IN THAT! THROUGH THERE!" and then follows that with, "And that I can, ZIP ZAP! AND I'M GONE!!!"
Same thing with Peter Cook and Faye Dunaway.
Supergirl is nowhere near as bad as some people say, it's a really good time.
I love this movie. To me, Supergirl is like the Superman universe's 1980s answer to Labryinth or Return to Oz.

Its just about the biggest crapfest there is.
The only things that are tolerable are Slater, the costume, the music & the flying.
Everything else is ass.
