Today, at Wondercon, asked Geoff Johns about the possibility of a Donner collaboration to do a "Superman II" adaptation in comics, since Donner never got a chance to go back and film his version.
I don't know if Johns got confused, but said that he'd already done something like that with "Last Son" with Donner.... either he meant that this WAS more/less what Donner would have done with SII (which wouldn't make any sense), or this was the best that could be done with editorial constraints.
Since the convention was telling JOhns to wrap up his talk, didn't feel like I could elaborate (also with others in line to ask a question).
Who wouldn't buy a comic book adaptation of SII- the way Donner/Mank originally intended?
On the flip side, this would FORCE them to come up with an alternate ending to the time reversal...wouldn't it?

My question to him would be "why are DC and WB so f-ing inept?"

A while ago I suggested an Alex Ross-illustrated adaptation of STM and SII as Donner intended, then continuing on with annual graphic novels set in that universe. I thought it was a pretty snazzy idea and people seemed to agree.
Isn't there some sort of image rights issue with Brando though? And an adaptation issue with Puzo? That's what I'd heard at least.

That's an AWESOME idea. The thing with a Puzo dispute makes sense.... though I know that John Byrne for awhile was supposed to do a comic book adaptation of Superman II--- until the powers that be apparently changed their minds. With Brando's likeness used in the Superman Returns prequel/adaptation, I would have thought it was a done deal that DC could use it whenever they wanted, but maybe not. Still..... I wish Geoff Johns would have talked about it more, but his answer sounded like he didn't have much more to say about it than that. Pity.

;D San Francisco Wondercon isn't too far, Jimbo, ya shoulda come with me to ask him yourself! On a slightly more serious note, Johns mentioned that there were more than a few things that he was not able to discuss, BUT that his position wasn't so much about DC having more CONTROL over the properties, but that it was more about collaboration, and why certain details were important on projects that came out/are coming out. Funny thing is, for many of the really good questions, Johns said exactly what Bryan Singer said: "I can't talk about that." So.... maybe it all really IS about contractual gag orders and confidentially rules, that won't allow anything to slip out of anyone connected to the WB/DC empire. *sigh*

Don't you mean Superman III?!? Not Superman II, as that was more or less done and even the donner cut was released (though not completely finished).

Actually, Johns may have thought the same thing.... that I was wondering what Donner would have done with a Superman III--- if that's the case, even though the Donner "Last Son" is a hybrid with what's in the comics now (Lois/Clark being married) then I'm actually a little disappointed if Donner would have just brought back the Phantom Zone criminals for the third one.
What I meant was having a REAL comic book adaptation (although Puzo may be a sticking problem) of SII--- but--- not like the RDC- which had to incorporate Lester stuff that didn't really fit- just because no other footage was available by DOnner to do it his way....
But- a '100%' Donner/Mankiewicz version, the way that Donner would have SHOT it (more or less), if he had the resources/access to all the actors/sets/etc. and REALLY had been able to complete it as he had imagined.
So, that's what I meant- John Byrne mentioned in an interview somewhere that plans WERE for a SII adaptation that he was to draw around the SR release..... but that WB changed its plans and did the SR prequels instead.
Pity.
